OK send the money to Catostrophie's little hospital that was "scammed" for $98.02.
Your problem is the coil. Replace it. I think the 97 MPI has one. my 94 mag does. and I had a hellava time finding out the problem with hard starts, runs only well in high RPM. stalls in idle. It's your coild bud.

09-10-2010 06:31 PM"OBNOXUS" was the first to respond with the closest answer to the problem. The scan tool was definately needed to find that the ECU was not getting the proper signal from the coolant temp sensor even though it was new. Another gremlin turned out to be related wiring as in part #84-817376T which is the wiring harness from the distributor to the coil. Thanks to all whom pitched in their ideas and theories as I tried most of them. A special thanks goes to Tony from Chesapeake Marine Service here in Middle River for his experience and guidance during this troubleshooting.

09-19-2010 09:46 AMHello! Your problem is likely the ECT sensor "engine coolant tempature" when they go bad and you put the scaner on, they will read a temperture of -57 degrees fahrenheit and the engine will start but it will choke with fuel until it stall.. I have seen it many times on my costumers EFI engines. Its a cheap sensor 805218T is the mercruiser part number.
