Second Annual Sunny Isles Beach Offshore Challenge June 11th-14th, 2009
May 5th, 2009 by Pig Iron Racing
The overwhelming success of last year’s event sets the stage for this year to be bigger and better than the inaugural event. This three day event will start on Friday morning when at least 50 boats are expected to make this year’s Bimini Ocean race. The Bimini Memorial Ocean Race allows for a great variety of boats to race “Old School”, to Bimini and Back.
On Sunday the action starts at noon with Offshore Super Series racing in all classes. Viewing is excellent anywhere along the Sunny Isles Beach to the north end of the Haulover Inlet.
Join us at both events, we are running the Friday, Bimini and back event with our Pig Iron 540 and the Sunday OSS race in Vee lite with our Mercury 525.

For more information about racing in the event, being a volunteer or sponsorship opportunities, go to www.SIBOffshore.com and www.Offshoresuperseries.com

You'd think if ESPN was willing to do it everywhere except here, they'd be open to a real professional program from our guys. (US Offshore Racers)

I am sure they would be open to a real professional program, that's pretty much what is lacking though.

Here is a hint though... P1 has two classes, Class 1 has 1, Xcat has 1.... Amercia? 13? 15? how many this week?

I don't remember the channel, but I do remember seeing it on TV regularly in the early 90's...used to look foreward to it and that was before I was a boat person.. I was a desert rat.

if your going that far back...I remember watching it in the mid 70's, was 12 or 13. tracked down cigs address ( that was a chore, way before the internet) and wrote them a letter saying how cool the boats were. few weeks later I got a bunch of pictures, brochures and a letter from Don saying to stop by if I was ever in florida. That blew me away that some famous boat builder/racer guy would take the time to do something like that for a kid in ohio. Now I really wish I still had that stuff.

The best you could hope for if you had very good show was a time buy and small amount of the commercial inventory that you could try and sell.
Speed was over 75K per race for the LLC with the time buy and production costs (2 shows per event aired about 3 times each). ESPN would be much higher. I would think the P1 shows were $25K just for the Speed time buys for the US airings.

I know it's probably way too late. But, for the future....

You're saying that a race like the Bimini race, which will have a lot of participation due to historical value and a lack of severe organizational protection, could have possibly been placed on ESPN instead of bowling for around $75,000 and whoever purchased that time would have the rights to sell all of the commercial time during the 1/2 hour show?

Or ESPN2, or Speed, or ?

They currently are talking over 50 boats? What if JC was approached and CBS was invited by him for this one special event? Boosts his show, boosts CBS's film and therefore possible viewers, and promotes offshore for all. Even all the oldtimers (me) can't say the course is too short.

(As you guys know, I'm an optimist on everything except politics)

You could do a time buy. You would also have the cost of capturing the footage, the editing and voice over. To do a one off deal it can be very expensive $125K easy.

The commercial inventory is not that valuable. The big players buy blocks from the media networks. For example GM had a fox deal that allowed them to buy commercials on Speed during the LLC shows for about 25% of our cost. Even with a time buy you seldom own all of the commercial inventory.

Concerning JC and CBS. SBI is his brand. Commercially it is a not good idea to use your marketing for another entity's brand.

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that bowling is the most popular sport in the country (in terms of number of participants).

Not my thing, but I want to make a positive contribution to the thread.

Ahhh Rich you are 1 funny guy! I grew up and a kid in Atlanta in the late 60's early 70's and the Falcons were horrible. then my dad got transfered to St. Louis in 75 and the Cardinals were not any better. My friend liked the Cowboys so I picked the Steelers. I do pull for the Bucs too and as a kid I was a Dolphin fan. However I bleed black and gold!
