Can anyone guestimate the cost of an overhaul for a 1985 mercury 200 powerhead? As I'm told rings are gone in one cylinder. Maybe not worth rebuilding?

08-30-2011 10:17 PMIf compression is down on one cylinder it likely has a damage to the bore and needs to be sleeved. They are rebuild-able in most cases. Assuming the crank is good. Ballpark 3500 for rebuild twice or more to replace.

There is good guy up here in Wisconsin that I heard is really reasonable and does alot of rebuilds only on mercs... I think he retired from there 20 years ago and still does tons of work out of his house... I guess the UPS man stops there twice a day...

Thanks Jim and Jr.
I was looking at a boat that needs help, that just put it out of the comfort zone.

08-30-2011 10:28 PMAdam, you should look to see what is really wrong. Have you pulled the head to look? No sense guessing. Maybe it is just the head gasket.
Its not yours I see now. I agree keep looking.

Thanks Jim. I would look into it a little more, but the boat is 4 hours away from us. It's more boat than we are looking for anyway. Any good deals for 20-25 center consoles out your way? Under $10K. Looking for a second boat so I don't need another money pit.

09-02-2011 05:40 PMI emailed Charlie. We'll see what he knows when he has a chance to get back.
I know they made a 30 and a 40 open. I did not know of any 24 opens. But, if that is one of his 24's made into an open boat, that would be a sweet center console to own......Getting bad advice is unfortunate, taking bad advice is a Serious matter!!

09-07-2011 08:41 AMWell, Charlie emailed back. By the way, he'll be at OFF this year if anyone's going......
It is one of his bottom designs. It was not built by him at Banana, but was one of maybe a couple made by Port Edgewood. If anyone is interested, here is his answer to if it one of his and Don's bottom designs.
Hey Paul
Yes, same hull different deck
That boat was built by Port Edgewood, not me. They only built one or two, don't know why it never caught on as a center console, but for some reason it never took off. Whoever is looking at it, have them check for water in the wooden stringers, transom or under the cockpit floor.
On the positive side, if it has been around this long, it is probably okay.
See you at OFF
Charlie
Be nice if you were interested Adam. That is a fast bottom design, very rough water capable, and unique. All at the same time.Getting bad advice is unfortunate, taking bad advice is a Serious matter!!

Thanks Paul. And Charlie. Gonna sit on the cash for awhile and see what comes along. That is still a possibility, it's one cool rig! Seeing that it's not Charlie's, any idea on the build quality?

09-09-2011 10:59 AMThe guy I trust, Charlie, says to watch the wood. So I'd have it surveyed. Other than that, I'm sure he'd have pointed out anything else he thought was deficient. He knows his stuff, his boats are outstanding.....
The motor would have to have a complete compression test etc. But, it's a one, (or two), of a kind with a Charlie McCarthy/Don Aronow designed bottm. It's got to be one heck of an overall performer.......
Here's a link to his boat company page profile/history if you're not familiar.....
