Hey bud,............Funny how that works.
I could dig up a ton of remarks, not really worth the time though.
Looks like there is nothing else worth even considering any more though
Other thing we noticed in the past is you even mention turbo's and the thread pretty much goes dead in a day or two.
All this fresh Merc. air has put new life into all our fellow offshore boaters, they just can't stop talkin now.
All in all it's good for anyone pushing technology and the new compition it forces out even better things to come.

02-16-2010 04:30 PMAgreed as well..... My fathers boat had twin turbo, water injected engines back in the mid 70's built by Flagship Marine when they were based out of Freeport, NY.
Add to that list is headers...... Companies like Stainless Marine have been making cast aluminum manifolds that make power and last considerably longer than CMI's and everyone complained they don't have enough "bling" and buy the CMI's again and again....
Then Mercury designs a turbo engine with a big aluminum 4-into-2 manifold and it's called "art-work".
End of rant...carry on!

02-16-2010 04:37 PMIf someone called it artwork, I missed it. The engines are relatively bling-free. But so are the engines in any of the new Ferraris and many other exotics. I for one love the look of blowers and stellings and injector bonnets. But I suppose if I could choose an engine that looked great or one that performed great, I'd go for the performance.
On the other hand, the certainly appear to be engineering masterpieces. I for one would typically scoff at what Merc Racing offered- the 1000 was out when everyone was moving to the Whipple and they were pretty late to the party with the 1075- a relatively unremarkeble piece. But this latest engine is a totally different deal. Merc has gone way beyond a pair of turbos controlled by wastegates.

Before this release there were a handful of turbo supporters. Like Chris said turbos with wastegates...
Mercury dialed it up a bunch and hats off to them.
However it still needs to be proved to me how a 4 valve head with turbos is going to have any bottom end torque. Maybe most people will overlook that for the big number these will deliver once the turbos get spooled up.

02-16-2010 05:10 PMThey did a great job hiding the accessories. Is the closed cooling heat exchanger remotely mounted like dry sump tanks? I do hope some aftermarket exhaust (read headers, not manifolds) gets made.
Now days, you mostly just look at the cladding on the top of the motors on all those engines you mentioned.

Its just a puter controled, fuel injection. The puter has got to be running the wastegate the boost plus everything else. Nothing tricky its just a big twin turboed motor making a little HP. Friend of mine build turbo small blocks with 2000HP at BB&T for class racing ten yrs ago. What brand are the turbos? Maybe German Triple Ks or what we boys in the south like to call them KKKs. The days of the blowers are numbered. Just like the carbs and it about time.

02-16-2010 06:17 PMI'm not trying to take away from Mercury because this was a long time coming but the masses usually go with or like whatever Merc. puts out.
For me it's sayings like the ones below that gives one that impression.......
(ps, removed the names of the posters but you get the picture.)

02-16-2010 07:37 PMIt's not just turbos- and there are no wastegates.
The manifolds are pulse tuned. The turbine inlets operate on a constant-pressure principle that keeps the compressor spooled at all times, negating the turbo lag common ith turbo setups with boost-controlled wastegates. There are valves integral to the exhaust that regulate gas flow. Merc is applying for a patent on the design.
The blades and center sections are 3rd party. The rest is Merc.
Personally I think they look kinda' blah. Sitting next to other engines in this range, they're plain in comparison. But so is the 1075. If you're $400K+ deep in a pair of engines, pulling some pieces off and sending them off for chrome or custom paint probably isn't a barrier. As exposed as the valve covers are, I'd expect to see aftermarket pieces very quickly.

Chris,
No disrespect to Mercury,........But Tom Earhart has been Pulse tuning for over 15 years. It's nothing Mercury invented even though they are applying for a patent.
Yes I know thes pictures have been posted before.
And the low end power has been talked about as well as no Turbo lag............
Well my friends that is the Pulse Tuning,.......again Tom Earhart had it figured out a long time ago, but there's more tricks in the bag than just pulse tuning.
My opinion the best part Mercury has going for them is the valve train.
Other than that not much is different.
Might want to look at the Intake manifold on Tom's engine too. Ever see one like this? Can you find the fuel system ? No Carbs,.......no Fuel rail ??
Anyways enjoy

02-16-2010 11:08 PMFew More,.....Hard for many to understand but there are many years of development here and it's far more indepth than just hair dryer's and waste gates.
Fuel system, isn't the magic either before anyone jumps on the band wagon. Just showing allot of the thought that was put
into the continued development of Earharts engines.
Anyways enjoy the pictures.
