Okay, I have heard a 500HP limit in class 6, Could someone post what they know about the boats that are to be in six. and thier respective powerplants. The only boat I know anything about is Smith Bros. which has a 496 with Headers. How is this determined as well, Just as a class we all look at the motor and agree that it is making 500 hp.? I am looking at mimicking an HP 500 carb. as i have carb, and intake, and several other components to get there, ( still need a 502 block to build ) just wondering what else will be in the class.

01-22-2010 10:10 AMDoes a "Smitty Built" 500 hp motor, make a difference over say a "Me built" 500 hp motor, or a "Crocket Built" 500 hp motor?
So how much approx. power is in 1: Akula ? 2: Wazzup ?

Akula has a blower Not sure was else.
I also know that Tyler & George's old red boat is coming back with a pretty good big block. If there really is a 500hp limit someone should let Gary Cook know

01-22-2010 10:24 AMI'm still working on putting together parts for an engine, but would like to be able to use what i can, while staying in 6. I used to have a 26' Velocity with the 385 HP mercury EFI in it and it would do 72.

01-22-2010 10:24 AMThe 500 horse limit was discussed and agreed upon last year (by all class 6 teams) during the conference call. This should be discussed again (prior to the OPA party) and placed in black and white in the rulebook. Mark H. outlined all the information that was agreed upon, (for class 5 and 6) maybe he can repost this info. Although the general rules have not changed, parameters were added to ensure better/fair racing.

I suggest anyone thinking about building a boat or motor for any class contact Smitty. He is the final word. I wouldn't go by what you read here on the internet.
As far as class 6 goes, we adopted a 500 hp limit to keep cost down in our
class last year. It worked very well to keep the competition close all year.Rich Smith

WE are putting a guide line on the class. 500 hp was discussed. However we need to look at the hulls as well. For instance Cotner Runs really well with 500 hp. A 24 Pantera wont break 60 mph. There is still a big inconsistancy in the boats themselves to regulate them all to the exact same horsepower. This should be discussed to keep parity in the class. It is growing quickly and will only continue if it is fair. As far as a Smitty built motor, I think you know better than that. I am all about fair play. The green machine was built for class 5. For safety reasons we asked and the class agreed to let him into class 6. We chipped that motor back to 5600 where it only made 550 hp. The boat ran dead even with Cotner. This year he's got a new package. We are all ears. Lets work it out now. Smitty

Smitty beat me to the keyboard. What he said is correct. We as a class
voted to let Boomer compete with the motor that came in the Wazzup 2. They agreed to chip and tune it down to class specs. Anyone who watched us race with Boomer and Anthony know we were deck to deck the entire season. Anyone who thinks something unfair or illegal was going on doesn't know the facts and I suggest those people who obviously are making uninformed judgements keep their opinions to themselves or at the very least ask those of us who are directly involved. I for one do not care for the insinuation that Boomer, Anthony or Smitty were doing anything unfair.Rich Smith

01-22-2010 12:34 PMSmitty,
I agree with your entire post. A 24 Carrera weighs alot more than my Sunsation, so it is only fair that a heavier boat be allowed more power. The lil Wazzup and Cotner ran side by side all season (I had the best seat to see this-as I was usually right behind them) neither seemed to have an advantage. I know that OPA will do what ever is fair to make boats competative. There has to be "allowances" made with brackett racing to encourage boats to participate! Again, everyone in class 6 approved of Wazzup coming into class 6! No one who races in class 6 has b*itced about this!
The success of class 6 is evident and "We've become victims of our own success".
Well said Rich!!

01-22-2010 12:40 PMWe are still gathering pieces but putting together an old Mach1, WIth some deck modifications, Should be cool. When its done. of course, I'm not suggesting an old Mach1 is cool, but it can be. Its a extra boat laying around here, so the price is right. The lack of a 502 block may have us going the route of a stroked 454. Its still coming together so we want to build within the rules. ( still looking for a 502 block to build )

01-22-2010 01:27 PMI will post some pictures as we work. Was just talking with my brother, and we are speculating some serious deck surgury, and getting the boat in the shop next week. He is assembling the Drive in spare time. Did i mention i still need a 502 builder?

01-22-2010 02:39 PMThe real credit for the success of Class 6 goes to the teams and OPA.I remember back in 2006 when this class was intoduced, there were only two boats;Papa Dukes and The Crocket Rocket. But OPA stayed committed to the class, and by the end of the season there were five boats. It looks like there will be ten or more boats in 2010.
The class is competitive and relatively affordable. The thought behind the 26ft length/70mph limit was to provide a place for the smaller, narrower, lower freeboard vee bottoms to race competitively regardless of water conditions.
Looks like Class 5 is going to have to recruit some more race teams...we still want to be the largest class in OPA!Last edited by 1waterboy1; 01-22-2010 at 03:11 PM.
