What are the ins and outs of San Juan and the area. I am going for the first time in about a month and I am trying to figure out where to stay and what to see. Any help will be truly appreciatted. Also good places to eat and what to avoid.

What to avoid.....Do not wear jewlery and carry alot of cash. Stay off 'em dark streets. If your going to rent a car which I would not recomend take out the insurance.

I lived in Puerto Rico for 3 years, San Juan can be a scary place at night, do some home work and you will have a good time, but be alert. The rain forest, is pretty cool to see,
and the surf on the west coast by Mayajuez(SP) is awesome. the El consistador is a great place to stay, nice golf course, casino, great beach on Little palamino, you have to take a shuttle boat there.

I just got back from a few days at the Ritz. Went to Old San Juan at night, no problems. Like any city, use common sense. The neighborhood near the Ritz and the Hotel El San Juan was safe. The El San Juan is party central at night.

Traffic was kind of nuts. We stuck with cabs, no rental car.

I used to go there fairly often for work, but it's been a long time. Always stayed in the same place, which I think is called Condado Beach. Couple of big hotels and casinos were there....nice area, tons of nightlife.

The bus to Old San Juan was a quarter...not sure if it still is. Those bus drivers will scare the hell out of you, but it's still better than driving yourself.

I rented a car there once and turned it back in as soon as I got to the hotel. Not really a place you'll enjoy driving.

I took the girls to the mall and old San Juan the day after arrival. Did not drive until it was time to return it to the airport. If ya notice I'd say 90% of the vehicles have damage to at least one corner of the car.
