Getting ready to run a new 502 engine in my 25' Outlaw----picked up a oil temp gauge today.....was told I need one---The sensor is installed into the oil filter bracket (Hardin Marine) !!!!!! The oil line into the oil filter bracket comes from the oil cooler....Bottom line--WHAT temp am I looking for???? I never had a Temp gauge on my boat-nor seen one on anyone of my friend's boats !!!!! .......I have searched many forums/ with all different answers, depending on where the sensor is located ????
Thanks---Mike--Tampa Bay !!

01-24-2013 07:51 PMIn the most general terms the oil should get hot enough to steam off the moisture that accumulates in the oil. So somewhere near 210. Most would agree 280 is too hot and 150 is not hot enough.

02-01-2013 06:25 PMThe second biggest advantage of having an oil temp gauge, you will not believe how long it takes the oil temp to come up to 100+ where it should be before you drive it hard......

02-01-2013 11:23 PMWell the good news is there are thermostatically controlled oil systems available for our northern buddies. All Mercury Blue engines now come with them.
