Caution to boaters: Falling concrete
MARATHON: The state and U.S. Coast Guard are monitoring the Old Seven Mile Bridge after a chunk of concrete fell from an isolated piece of the old roadway last week, the city manager said.
Boaters should use caution and go around the area, which has been marked off, according to a warning being played regularly on the emergency marine Channel 16. The part of the bridge is at the opposite end of where people may walk and sightsee and unreachable by pedestrians.
"That portion of the bridge was never treated or painted or anything," said City Manager Mike Puto on Monday. "In my opinion, that's not a high-traveled boating area. It's concrete getting old."
The section of the bridge in question is the piece on which a tree has grown out of. Locals decorate the tree with lights at Christmas.
