2 indicted in Lanier boating crash that injured Forsyth family

FORSYTH COUNTY — An Alpharetta man and an Atlanta woman were recently indicted for their reported involvement in a May 2014 boating incident on Lake Lanier that injured a Cumming family of four, two seriously.

Joseph Theodore Korosec, 40, faces five counts relating to the collision, including one for boating under the influence and two for serious injury by vessel.

The 24-foot Ebb Tide power boat he was driving reportedly T-boned a 29-foot Bayliner cabin cruiser carrying four members of the Romeo family, all of whom were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The incident occurred about 9:35 p.m. on May 12, a Sunday, in the Vann’s Tavern area of the lake, which falls within the jurisdiction of the Department of Natural Resources.

According to the Forsyth County Grand Jury indictment, one count was for “seriously disfiguring” the right leg of Robert A. Romeo, who suffered cuts and a deep laceration. The second count was for “depriving” 17-year-old Sierra Romeo of her right leg and “rendering … [it] useless.”

Patricia Romeo, 41, and Robert N. Romeo, 21, sustained cuts and bruising, though their injuries did not carry into the indictment.

He also faces charges of operating a vessel without a required light and giving false statements.

After the collision, 39-year-old Christina Jennings was arrested after stating she had been driving the boat. Authorities later determined Jennings and Korosec had switched their roles.

She was indicted on two counts of false statements.

It could not immediately be determined when Korosec was arrested. Neither suspect was injured in the crash.
