The cat is out of the bag at Checkmate. The Ohio boat manufacturer, now owned by ex-Baja CEO Doug Smith has now constructed the largest boat they’ve ever produced. This boat, dubbed the Punisher 43, is the first hull out of the original Apache-derived Chief molds. As everyone remembers, Chief was intended to be the progression of the venerable Apache 41. That hull featured some groundbreaking innovations such as a reverse step and a negative chine design that ended up on many a boat soon after the Chief’s introduction.

Closing out our 11 from 2011, our number one story is the unprecedented number of mishaps and the tragic loss of three competitors occurring during the Key West World’s. Nothing hits any closer to home nor any harder than the tragic passing of friends. We wish this story wasn’t being written. For now we can only hope it doesn’t have to be written again sometime in the near future.
We’re not qualified to speculate on the root cause or causes ...Published on 02-18-2012 11:46 PMCategories:

Our choice for the number two story of 2011 finds us in the courtroom instead of on the water.
It seems that there’s always some piece of litigation floating around the world of powerboating. Litigation is a fact of life in our present times. No industry or group of people is immune. We’ll leave the discussion of why this trend is curving upward for another time, but for now let’s take a look at some recent events.
Over the last few years we’ve all read about various ...Published on 02-17-2012 11:49 PMCategories:

If one were to be told the story of the last year of the life of Powerboat Magazine, not knowing the story, they would surely think they were being put on. It is hard to believe that a magazine with the history of Powerboat would be purchased, pumped for upgrades and pushed to get more subscriptions, then be terminated, then be reopened with bigger and better plans with fewer issues, pushed for more subscriptions, then after investing in content for the 2012 year be closed once again.
Judging from the disappointment among the magazine’s fans ...Published on 02-14-2012 11:55 PMCategories:

One of the bigger stories of 2011 was the dramatic market shift towards center consoles. What was a few years ago looked upon as a way to pick up a few extra sales by re-decking an existing sport boat, these boats have become significant profit centers for many builders. We believe there are several factors at play in driving this trend. There’s no doubting the utility of this type of boat. They’re not only capable of respectable speeds, they’re certainly more family and group-friendly.
A strong factor in this shift is the change in how performance boaters view these utilitarian boats. We like to think of it ...Published on 02-10-2012 11:59 PMCategories:

An issue that’s definitely been putting the pinch on boaters everywhere is the general unavailability of ethanol-free gasoline. The issue’s roots dates back to the mid-90′s when Congress buckled to lobbyists in the 11th hour and saddled us with ethanol-oxygenated gas. The petroleum industry had long extolled the virtues of MTBE as an oxygenator. But agrobusiness saw dollar signs in this potentially enormous new market for their corn-based product and the rest as they say is history.
In September, ...Published on 11-17-2011 12:24 AMCategories:

A group of boaters from the Key West poker run assembed an impromptu tribute this morning that was halted by the Coast Guard. In a report from the course, the boaters planned a three-lap tribute run, one lap for each of the fallen racers. The run was taking place after the completion of today’s first race. Approximately one lap in, the Coast guard moved a 100-foot cutter and two smaller ...Published on 11-13-2011 12:26 AMCategories:

UPDATE - Driver Bob Vesper and throttleman Danny Crank were successfully removed from the boat. Vesper emerged from the crash relatively unscathed. Crank was conscious and talking. He has been transported to Miami for medical treatment. According to our people on-site, the boat’s canopy suffered significant damage. Team Warpaint respectfully requests that individuals refrain from ...Published on 11-10-2011 12:46 AMCategories:

Joe Offshore
We all know him.
He’s that guy. Been there, done that, got the shirt.
In reality Joe Offshore is a little bit of many people in this sport. He’s an enthusiast, he’s a boater, he’s an industry guy and alot of times he’s a racer. And sometimes… well, you know.
How many times have you heard the line? “I’d tell you but some of these people are still alive.” For our purposes, ...Published on 11-10-2011 12:33 AMCategories:

As many of you know, one of my favorite classes is SVL. There are a couple of reasons, including the camaraderie of the class and the competitiveness of the boats and teams. These teams will race to win during the day, and have dinner together at night. The part that amazes me is that during the dinner they will not only share the usual stories (fibs?), about how they happened to be better or worse than the other boats, they will also share items that may have helped them win or place on the podium. ...Published on 11-09-2011 12:45 AMCategories:

What individual has influenced the industry and sport of offshore powerboating more than any other?
Is it Reggie? Aronow? Kiehaefer? Maybe.
There have been so many who have passed through the world of offshore and more than a few have made their marks. And sometimes they left a few dents. Most of us in some form have had this debate with our friends. And most likely you have a few personal favorites, and maybe even someone you admire ...Published on 11-09-2011 12:44 AMCategories:

People make things like this happen. And we’re fortunate enough to have a crew made up of some pretty decent one’s.
Driving this new effort is our Publisher, Paul Rose. Most of you know Paul from his many years of activities on the various internet message boards and as one of the founder’s of SeriousOffshore. Paul is a management consultant by day and is known to most of his friends in the sport as “Mr. SVL”, stemming from ...Published on 11-09-2011 12:43 AMCategories:

We are very proud to launch our new SeriousOffshore Newsmagazine.
Three years ago, the forum website SeriousOffshore.com was born. The idea then was to build a place where people could come and enjoy themselves with other offshore powerboating enthusiasts. A place where they could come and relax, sharing their interests and friendships in a relaxed and hassle free environment. This newest step for us is nothing more than an extension of that idea.
