A couple years ago we reviewed a new Skater build we dubbed the Silver Bullet. The boat was a phenomenal piece of work, going over 160 MPH with 1200 HP Sterling's, (de-tuned 1500's), and Arneson drives.

Unfortunately, there just did not seem to be any buyers for a 33' boat, (30'8" without the bustle), with that type of speed capabilities running Arneson drives. So, out came the Sterling's, off came the Arneson's, and a new opportunity was created. That opportunity ended ...by Published on 02-09-2016 01:20 AMCategories:
In the performance boating world, the one thing that has remained constant every since the first Roman added extra rowers to his Galley, there is never enough horsepower. In today's world, there are several options to try for more horsepower, and several players who want to provide the ultimate horsepower option. There are also several questions begging to be answered. Like: What is more important, horsepower or torque? Many don't realize that the horsepower at the crankshaft of the engine is multiplied by the gear ratios of the drives or transmissions. So, an engine with 500 foot pounds of torque, passing the power through a 1.5 drive, has 750 foot pounds of torque at ...by Published on 08-30-2014 10:39 PM
As ranked in most military expert’s reviews, the F-4 Phantom, F-15 Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor, and F-117 Nighthawk are 5 of the top U.S. Fighter Jets of all time. But, if the military had decided to build a high performance fighter catamaran, this latest Skater F-426 at 12 feet wide and 42 feet long, is what they would likely conceptualize and commission to protect us all from evildoers on our waterways.
There is nothing that can be over-stated about the distinctiveness of the paint when compared to other high end performance boats on the water. The team assembled to design this scheme ...Published on 05-28-2014 09:20 AMCategories:
C. F. Johnson, owner of Daytona Boat Works and his Record Breaking TX-41, designed by World Renown Maritime Architect Jack Hargrave, thundered away from Miami's Bayfront Park on Sunday, June 21, 1964 at 5 am slowing down only long enough to take on fuel before arriving in the Hudson River thus completing the 1,257 mile run in 31 hours, 32 minutes. Deemed the World's Fastest Sport Fishing Boat.
'T' was for Tandem; 'X' was for Experimental; and '41' was the Length Overall.
Johnson powered TX-41 with 409 cubic inch Chevy V8's with his state of the art Turbochargers. TX-41 held the title for 17 years.
During a conversation with BBB725 he brought up a boat he had bumped into information on while searching the internet. He sent us the information he had gathered, and after reading ...Published on 03-07-2014 11:13 PMCategories:

We had the opportunity to visit with Ian at the Miami Ilmor display and personally tell him thanks for the way their company handled one of our members engine problems. It is no accident that Ilmor has grown at a tremendous rate, and made a reputation for product and service excellence, while others have had issues.
At the Miami show they had their latest V-10 725 which first put them on the performance boat map, their Indy drive system, and some of their new V-8's.
It's ...Published on 10-19-2013 12:00 AMCategories:

Nineteen years ago today a very special racer, and person, crashed in the World Championship Offshore races in Key West Florida. The stories associated with the life and the accident of Tom Gentry are numerous. His accomplishments speak of the type of person he was. His success in Hawaii as a developer allowed him to attempt many things to meet his passion for offshore performance boating, and I have tried to put a few of those accomplishments, and the overwhelming grief his accident caused so many, into this first small article about him.
For some of you it is a learning experience, for others you were there and know much more about the person than I do. Hopefully all of you will enjoy this a bit and the memory of Tom will be carried on for those ...Published on 05-05-2012 09:15 PMCategories:

Update Comments
Well, unfortunately Phenomenon burned up a motor, number four, in testing on the Thursday before the Kilo Record Trials I cannot tell you how disappointed the fans were in Biloxi. I can tell you the Phenomenon team was as much, or even more disappointed as the fans. I spent some time chatting with Scott and Al at the dunker test on Friday, we were about the last to go. Scott would not say what speeds he was seeing before the engine went on Thursday, but I can tell you there was a really big smile on his face when he thought about it. Seems like a decent hint of what to expect ...Published on 03-27-2012 09:41 PMCategories:

We caught up last week with Steve Stepp, founder and president of Velocity Powerboats. Steve was kind enough to share with us a look into how this long-time boatbuilder has been weathering the storm of this tight economy and some of the things they’re doing now and in the future.
In looking through the photos from the Miami Boat Show, something caught our eye. Among the million-dollar megaboats was one little, but very intriguing boat. Serious photojournalist Tommy Snyder happened across the Jack Daniel’s Velocity, appropriately named “Old No. 7” while navigating the vast Convention Center. Seeing this boat, we felt we needed to get the story behind what is arguably the smallest in the current trend of “theme ...Published on 02-10-2012 11:59 PMCategories:

An issue that’s definitely been putting the pinch on boaters everywhere is the general unavailability of ethanol-free gasoline. The issue’s roots dates back to the mid-90′s when Congress buckled to lobbyists in the 11th hour and saddled us with ethanol-oxygenated gas. The petroleum industry had long extolled the virtues of MTBE as an oxygenator. But agrobusiness saw dollar signs in this potentially enormous new market for their corn-based product and the rest as they say is history.
In September, ...Published on 02-06-2012 12:11 AMCategories:

Our number 11 story in the countdown of the top 11 stories of 2011 is the launch of the 557HP Seven Marine Outboard. Introduced in February at the Miami Boat Show, the 557 could prove to be a major change in the marine-propulsion industry. Aside from the before unimaginable power packaged in an outboard motor, one very attractive attribute of this power package is it’s ability to deliver automotive reliability and ease of service to the outboard market.
It’s lightweight aluminum, fuel-injected, supercharged V8 was not something we expected to see, especially in this tight economy. But ...Published on 02-04-2012 12:13 AMCategories:

Board member Clark Bird (Griswald) takes us along on his journey to discover the basics of DIY electronic fuel injection modifications.
I have often read posts on the various message boards from boaters who are either converting to EFI or going back to carburetors, for some odd reason. Certainly, EFI isn’t anything new and has evolved with numerous companies providing hard parts as well as various software platforms that allow users to install and tune these systems themselves. Coming from a drag racing background, my tuning experience was all about carburetor ...Published on 11-18-2011 12:19 AMCategories:

Selecting the right tow vehicle to tow your boat, especially one that is that is agreeable as a daily driver, can be a very difficult decision.
And even if you begged, most dealers would not allow you to actually hook up your boat and test the combination out. Much of what you have to go by has to depend on the vehicle's specifications, its towing capacity, and your driving impressions. Whether you have your heart set on a particular vehicle or not, there are still many choices to be made about the engine, transmission, suspension, ...Published on 11-10-2011 12:36 AMCategories:

If you’re putting it in the fuel tank of your boat and running it through your very expensive engines, it’s probably a good idea to know what’s in it. And more importantly, what it does. You don’t have to be a chemist to have a basic understanding of what’s in some of these products and what they’ll do in your fuel system- good or bad.
Below is a list of selected fuel system additive and gas treatment products that may be used by engine owners to prevent, improve or correct fuel system issues.
Now that E10 gas has widespread distribution, many products which once were safe when used in conventional non-alcohol fuel, ...
