Luck of the Irish on St. Patricks Day?
SOS: It was 1979 I believe when you burst on the scene in the Open Class and shocked the offshore world with a win out of no-where. Everyone was waiting for the showdown between Betty Cook in Kaama and Joey Ippolito in Michelob Light, just like the previous year's season long battle. But a first time open class racer from the Northeast won their very first race in their brand new boat. Give us a little more history on that win than has already been written.
Charlie: I had hired JC Simon at the Key west World Championships in 1977 to design and build a new Open Class boat for me for the following season...meaning the season of 1978.

So the design began with input from me on what I wanted in a fast 38 footer.

Charlie McCarthy, both an Icon and Founder here on Serious, was one of the group of adrenaline junkies who decided that offshore racing would be the focus of a desire for speed as a first choice. It was not the only choice, as he has raced automobiles on tracks and across the country. Including in the Cannonball Run made so famous by Burt Reynolds and Farrah Fawcett.
This year he is celebrating the 10TH Anniversary of the Historic Offshore Race Boat Association. The HORBA association strives to keep the history of the sport, both by the written word and the restoration of offshore race boats, alive and well for future generations to enjoy.
SOS: Let’s start with your history, and what it was that caused you to decide to channel your energy into offshore racing and high performance offshore ...by Published on 11-05-2014 10:49 AM

Stock Outboard, the only class where the world's rules match the US rules, also appears to be strong this year. There are a few boats who will have the role of favorites, the wider Doug Wrights being the boats with the advantage over the narrower tunneled competition. But, there is one boat that we will be keeping our eyes on closely to see how it does. Risky Business, a 1992 Skater 28 with a pair of Mercury Racing 200 XS outboards (running approximately 240 HP), will be competing against ...by Published on 11-05-2014 09:55 AM
Wow, all reports from Key West are saying the fleet for the Superboat Unlimited class will be the largest ever assembled, nine competitors. We will update this story as it progresses, but we wanted to make sure you were prepared for the 1:30 PM start today. We figured a short blip is better than no blip, sorry. The races will be carried on Livestream starting at 9:30, so if you're not in Key West, watch if you get the chance because the Wednesday races are short.

Superboat in SBI has been growing since they modified the rules for the class a couple years ago. As the combined classes of the old Superboat 750, Superboat 850, and Supercat, the class had a group of teams to choose from. The only question was, would they all buy in to a class that almost mimicked the old Supercat Rules before the changes early in this century.
Many of us can remember the 12 or 13 boats that competed on a regular basis in the Supercat Class in the late 90's and early 00's, but it disappeared into a multitude of classes where the rules seemed to change annually. Well, that seems to be the case no longer and the teams appear ...by Published on 11-03-2014 09:24 PM
The Superboat Vee class in Key West for the 2014 SBI World Championships appears to be a five boat contest. Notables missing are Phantom 9 and BoatFloater.com. Steve Kildahl of BoatFloater is still recovering from his flip in the P1 Championship races, so his son will be in Sunprint with Steve Miklos. Stephen Kildahl will be driving with Steve Miklos on the throttles. We are all still wishing Steve a speedy and full recovery so we can watch father and son out there competing again.
This is the first race where these five boats will be running together ...by Published on 11-02-2014 09:12 PM
For everyone who survives the influence of the overall Key West atmosphere of fun, the races on Wednesday, the races on Friday, and still have the energy to head down to Duvall Friday evening for the parade and street party, there will also be another place to hook up with ardent performance boaters while admiring all of the race teams along Duvall. Our friends Matt and Jason from Speed On The Water and Gino from BurgerFi will be hosting a party at Gino and John's BurgerFi restaurant on Duvall Friday evening.

Key West Florida is the epicenter of offshore boat racing this week as we all know. The 34th World Championship event is being held in Key West and should have some very exciting racing. Rumors have it there will also be a bit of partying happening between, and sometimes during, the racing events.
The first main party event this year will be on Wednesday night after the races. Hammer Down Boating, along with Team Envy, Gone Again Racing, Hurricane of Awesomeness, and IR Designs is inviting all to attend a get together at Rick's Key West on Duvall ...by Published on 08-30-2014 10:39 PM
As ranked in most military expert’s reviews, the F-4 Phantom, F-15 Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor, and F-117 Nighthawk are 5 of the top U.S. Fighter Jets of all time. But, if the military had decided to build a high performance fighter catamaran, this latest Skater F-426 at 12 feet wide and 42 feet long, is what they would likely conceptualize and commission to protect us all from evildoers on our waterways.
There is nothing that can be over-stated about the distinctiveness of the paint when compared to other high end performance boats on the water. The team assembled to design this scheme ...by Published on 08-15-2014 09:19 AM
As a pre-Captain America was toasting his upcoming transformation into a much bigger and tougher super hero ready to save the world through the magic of science, he probably didn't know that some Little Guys can make it in the outside world without any magical transformation into some larger entity. If there is any question about little guys being tough, check out Bruce Lee at 5' 8" and 141 lbs. So maybe being tough, or in the thick of a contest has nothing to do with size, maybe it's just Karma.....
Karma refers to the principle of causality where intent and actions of an individual influence the future of that individual. Good intent and good deed contribute to good karma and future happiness, ...by Published on 06-09-2014 10:32 PMCategories:
One of the interesting concepts come up with by the Lake Race organizing committee was a venue for performance pontoons to compete against each other during the Lake Race Powerboat Races.
Many may see this as some kind of a publicity stunt meant only to appease some of the locals who happen to have pontoons faster than your average family barbeque water cruiser. But, as was soon apparent, there is a reason that Lake Of The Ozarks is seen as one of, if not the original birthplace of performance pontooning.
Parade Lap Pontoons
One of the key reasons for the performance pontoon boom at Lake of The Ozarks is the Doris family who live there and own the Playcraft boat manufacturing company locally. They would automatically ...Published on 05-28-2014 09:20 AMCategories:
C. F. Johnson, owner of Daytona Boat Works and his Record Breaking TX-41, designed by World Renown Maritime Architect Jack Hargrave, thundered away from Miami's Bayfront Park on Sunday, June 21, 1964 at 5 am slowing down only long enough to take on fuel before arriving in the Hudson River thus completing the 1,257 mile run in 31 hours, 32 minutes. Deemed the World's Fastest Sport Fishing Boat.
'T' was for Tandem; 'X' was for Experimental; and '41' was the Length Overall.
Johnson powered TX-41 with 409 cubic inch Chevy V8's with his state of the art Turbochargers. TX-41 held the title for 17 years.
During a conversation with BBB725 he brought up a boat he had bumped into information on while searching the internet. He sent us the information he had gathered, and after reading ...by Published on 05-06-2014 11:26 PMCategories:

Biloxi 2014 joined forces with the Lake Race at Lake of The Ozarks to bring the Run What Ya Brung class to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Every boat at the race was eligible to run, and the consensus was that Miss Geico and Cat Can Do would be the first and second place boats, if not necessarily in that order. Well, in the first race on Saturday Cat Can Do blew an engine, and Miss Geico puked a turbo and exhaust. Miss Geico barely crossed the finish line ahead of SOS Venezuela.

Dave Denham, driver for the Pirate Offshore Racing Super Vee Lite team, was named the 2014 recipient of the Randy Linebach Lighthouse Award on Sunday evening at the Golden Nugget Casino Hotel during the awards ceremony for the Smokin' the Sound offshore race.

Most knowledgeable people agree with the basic concept, operating high speed powerboats carries a certain amount of danger. Based on recent experiences, the danger involved has been brought even more to the forefront than previously. What this series of articles will try to review, and possibly cause some intelligent thought and discussion about, is what has been the difference causing this increase of terrible consequences during the recent few years? And, more importantly, maybe some ideas of what could be done to improve the situation for the safety of all involved? In this first article we’ll visit the issues involving Offshore Racing because of the proximity to the OPA and SBI World Championships.
Offshore powerboat racing has been around since 1911, and there have been a total of 28 fatalities during its history of over 100 years of organized events.
However, 10 of those deaths have occurred ...
