Sometimes the stars don’t line up exactly as planned, (Of Mice and Men?), but even then, when you are working on a Gold Coast Summer Blast weekend, the weekend can still glitter and shine. When a late notice of a wedding caused the unfortunate cancellation of the Friday evening dinner run, many were bummed. But the weather and water were dang near perfect for the Saturday run, (for everything except big air pictures by the photographer), but even then, an air shot or two may have occurred.

Greek mythology is always a bit confusing. The 12 Titans were thrown into exile by their son Zeus, but did some escape for a day? How does one differentiate between Oceanus, Titan God of the Sea & Water, versus Tethys, the Titan Goddess of Fresh Water? Is it possible all 12 escaped to manifest themselves in a display of offshore performance this past Sunday? Did the rumored 13th Titan, Dione, make her appearance as the 13th boat to the Clash? We will never know for sure, but the display of 13 old school performance boats on Sunday in St. Clair was impressive, as was the Cigarette pace boat.

In what’s being billed as the “Clash of the Titans” at the St Clair River Classic this coming weekend, all offshore performance boating fans should have an opportunity to see something that hasn’t been seen for quite some time; multiple classic race and performance boats of historical importance on the race-course at one time. We are hoping the turnout will meet, or even exceed, the 12 total Titans in Greek mythology. As of this writing, it seems to be possible.

This “Clash of the Titans” was the brain child, (maybe after a few beers?), of Roland “Smitty” Smith, OPA’s President. Matt Soper who

West Michigan Offshore’s 2021 Rock the Coast event began on Friday with boat rides for the Big Brother’s Big Sister’s of the Lakeshore rides, then the gathering of the boats at the Grand Haven Municipal Marina, followed by the Keith Holmes Memorial Run. The day went smoothly with an impressive turnout to honor one of West Michigan’s incredible performance boaters who was tragically lost.

One of the hardest, and most important, things one ever has to do is write remembrances for friends and associates who have tragically passed away. It is damn near impossible to accurately portray the impact special people have had on those who surrounded them, or state the importance of their lifespan.

    Keith Racing in Michigan City

Once a year West Michigan Offshore has a remembrance run to honor Keith Holmes, a special member of the performance boat community, and one who impacted so many performance boaters; not only in West Michigan, but around the world. Hopefully his legacy will continue to be honored, and the lives he touched

Having just left Skater yesterday, the latest 46' Skater arrived in Boyne yesterday for its initial shake down and dial-in. An 8 passenger stunner, with beautiful paint by the in-house Skater paint team and a custom designed interior by Appearance Products, we are sure it will be a show-stopper at Boyne Thunder. Its big Sterling blower power, and an old-school gauge dash makes it even more interesting.

When it comes to performance boats, the Skater 28 is one that is always spoke of with reverence. When Douglas Marine released the 28 Skater, it was an instant hit. It's ability to outperform larger Cats, and larger Vee's, in rough water conditions made it an instant legend. To this day, many 28 Skaters sell for more than they sold for when new. The latest, a 28 with many custom features, could be considered a work of art.

As almost everyone knows, Skaters are almost always one of a kind. Just about every boat has some custom feature, many more than one. The two Skater models which actually have ...

As seems to be the issue with every pre-planned boating weekend in West Michigan, the weather forecast was making the planning interesting. Depending on what weather person you listened to, or what forecast you looked up on the internet, the weather could be anything from 6 to 8 foot waves on the lake with gale and small-craft warnings with a 90% chance of rain. To partially sunny and 2 to 3 footers with a 20% chance of rain or less.

Well, some things just never seem to get settled. This is the third iteration of one of the sweetest boats built. This Skater 3312 started out as a beast nicknamed the "Silver Bullet" with its speeds of over 160 mph due to its Sterling power and Arneson drives.

In the performance boating world, the one thing that has remained constant every since the first Roman added extra rowers to his Galley, there is never enough horsepower. In today's world, there are several options to try for more horsepower, and several players who want to provide the ultimate horsepower option. There are also several questions begging to be answered. Like: What is more important, horsepower or torque? Many don't realize that the horsepower at the crankshaft of the engine is multiplied by the gear ratios of the drives or transmissions. So, an engine with 500 foot pounds of torque, passing the power through a 1.5 drive, has 750 foot pounds of torque at ...

One of the interesting concepts come up with by the Lake Race organizing committee was a venue for performance pontoons to compete against each other during the Lake Race Powerboat Races.

Many may see this as some kind of a publicity stunt meant only to appease some of the locals who happen to have pontoons faster than your average family barbeque water cruiser. But, as was soon apparent, there is a reason that Lake Of The Ozarks is seen as one of, if not the original birthplace of performance pontooning.

    Parade Lap Pontoons

One of the key reasons for the performance pontoon boom at Lake of The Ozarks is the Doris family who live there and own the Playcraft boat manufacturing company locally. They would automatically ...

    C. F. Johnson, owner of Daytona Boat Works and his Record Breaking TX-41, designed by World Renown Maritime Architect Jack Hargrave, thundered away from Miami's Bayfront Park on Sunday, June 21, 1964 at 5 am slowing down only long enough to take on fuel before arriving in the Hudson River thus completing the 1,257 mile run in 31 hours, 32 minutes. Deemed the World's Fastest Sport Fishing Boat.

Biloxi 2014 joined forces with the Lake Race at Lake of The Ozarks to bring the Run What Ya Brung class to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Every boat at the race was eligible to run, and the consensus was that Miss Geico and Cat Can Do would be the first and second place boats, if not necessarily in that order. Well, in the first race on Saturday Cat Can Do blew an engine, and Miss Geico puked a turbo and exhaust. Miss Geico barely crossed the finish line ahead of SOS Venezuela.
