Jesse James came out last year to the NPBA NY POKER RUN' Hall of Fame Event. Boat looked to be in all its original condition too !
Great shape after all these years...

Hey Ryan...cool story. Remember those blue PPI seats you sold me. Well they went into a 26 Corsa I got from Don Roberts. When I went to pick up the Corsa from Don in CT the Jesse James Cig was in his building. He did say Levin still owned it at that time.

Oh and here is the 1983 26 Corsa:

Well the sales broker said 572's, surveyor said 454's, valve covers say 400 HP and my mechanic says they look to be 545's. In any event, definitely "old school" motors.

Just picked this up last week for a whopping $2600... 86 Checkmate 240 Enforcer. Currently running a 330HP 454/alpha combo and it's dog ass slow.

Installing a 3000 watt stereo and detailing her tomorrow. Go fast mods next spring (can't have a blower hatch w/o a blower.)

Thanks! I just bought the boat last fall and spent last season rebuilding the motors. They just got freshened up due to the fact the boat had sat for a while. I hit 80 with ease and expect some where around 85. The previous owner blew two drves in the time he owned it over a 15 year period. Not bad. The drives apear to be in good shape. I think it is the perfect drive package for that power. Just wish they were'nt obsolete. The boat has a pink stripe and the name is 'PinkFloyd'. I love the name. Right for the era boat and fits me and my mood very well. :sifone: The drives are actually 3a's.

I am looking for anyone who is familiar with an old 70's Glastron CVX20 jet boat that was once owned by Evil Knievel. My neighbor when I was growing up on Lake Burton in N. E. Georgia had one that was red, white and blue and was very cool. I haven't been able to locate the boat or any pictures of the boat. I just wondered if anyone has seen or heard of the boat besides myself

Thanks for the kind words. She's not spotless but pretty good for a 40ish year old boat--hull #60 of the 24s from Brownie's shop. I wish I knew for sure what year that translated to--I'd guess '71. Completely gutted to the keel and rebuilt from 2002 - 2004. I bought it 3 or 4 years after the rebuild.

Your 24 just brings me back. It is such an honest, straightforward boat. I'm climbing up on my soapbox so beware. It unabashedly sports a functional windshield, cleats, louvers, and rails. The paint is classic and devoid of any modern silliness. If you're ever tempted to install any blingy, tribal, hot pink, lavender, cartoony or otherwise tacky accessories, let me know and I'll fly out there and talk you back from the edge.

Definitely a classic. It's a 1979 Pantera. I love it. But it would sure be nice to have a windsheild like yours. Especially for those early spring and fall runs .

Thanks, there is a lot I love about the boat. And the v-drive setup is pretty rugged and simple. But I'm still curious to see how it would be with sterndrives, like the Wellcraft. Much more efficient.

I think it would interesting to try either a twin all-aluminum 300HP smallblock setup (as light as possible, say under 1500 lbs of running gear) with duoprops, or a 540-636 big single with a Konrad (perhaps 1300 lbs of running gear). But part of me hates the thought of saying goodbye to one of the few remaining v-drive boats, even though mine is already semi resto-modded.

So far, lack of money and sentiment are camped out together on this one. :D

I've also thought about picking up a Wellcraft for experimentation. They did a few things with the boat that I liked, also, design-wise. How was the build quality of yours? Do you think any old one (say, '77 or earlier) will almost certainly need stringer/transom work if it hasn't had it already?

The Panteras look great to me. Those, and the Martini 25/26 ("whatever it takes") strike me as fantastic designs that I'd really overlooked until very recently. And the Martini has a windshield.

old377guy
03-26-2011, 09:53 PM
Here's the thing about your boat: It's the genuine article from back in the day right out of Brownie's shop. That hull is never really going to be a speed demon, but the ride is fantastic. Please don't ever consider putting a different drive configuration in it. The build quality of my Wellcraft was fair to good, but quality varied widely boat to boat. Yes, there were a few things "sleeker" on my Nova, but nowhere near worth the trade-off for your piece of history. Brownie is a member on this board and could probably give you the complete run down on you boat, you may want to PM him. All the best to you. - Jeff

They certainly can. All of the below with the exception of the blue Velocity competed in last year's Cowes Torquay Cowes race (178 nm) in some very nasty conditions.

Mike Bonoft did the immaculate restoration and re-rigging of both Uno Embassy and Dry Martini.

.

I had a '79 for 10 years. I replaced the transom and the stringers in the engine compartment. The rest were gone by the time I got rid of it. The woven roving covering the stringers and transom was so coarse that there were pin holes in the fabric. It had to start soaking up water from the first moment it was rolled outside and it rained. The transom was not laid or sprayed in place. It had an inner mold glassed in and there where large voids between it and the wood core of the transom. It had to have been holding a lot of water. After cutting the inner fiberglass away, the majority of the transom came out in handfulls like mulch.

Back in 1974 Donzi built several models with this 24' hull, I believe only a handfull of Dorals were built. Donzi back then were trying to build 24' boats with interchangeable deck & interliners. This type of system did not work to well :ack2: hence there are not many of these Donzi's still around. Here are some info on the other models.

A long time ago, I wrote the checks that paid for that hull design. It started as a 38 foot Banana and then we blocked the mold with a 4'foot plug and it became a 34 foot boat or 33 as some were marketed. The last 5 feet of the boat was designed perfectly straight so we could do that. When the boat is out of the water and you can get down to the strakes, you will see the strake that goes into the chine is 5 inches at the end, the next lower is 4 inches and the bottom one is 3 inches. When the boat comes down from a big leap, the entry is cushioned by this gradual increase in width. The chine being that wide is a good stabilizer at high speed, it stops chine walking before it starts. The bow is much narrower than other boats from that era. The reason was that when racing into a head sea, the boat could cut deep into the wave and then the weight of the boat takes over, end result...this boat won't be thrown high in the air and the throttles did not have to be cut back. The boat stayed low and level and still running at top speed. Your boat looks in great shape.....I won't comment on the babe LOL. Other boats out of that design are...Coyote, Sonic and Avanti.

Hellbent, you have an awesome looking updated paint scheme on your Chris Cat. I would love to have a pair of dry sump #6's on the boat. I would just like to see what she is capable of but I was told that the #2's were specifically or originally designed for the Christ Cat so it makes them kind of special to me. Especially since they are in such in original good shape exterior and with low hrs on internal rebuild. I think the ratio is 1:33 running a 31 pitch prop.

Here is my 1985 model Phantom 25. Its a classic offshore race hull made in UK and designed by Steve Baker. I have done during the years several engine set ups; Johnson V8 GT 300 twin spark Race, Promax 300 SVS, 2 x Merc 2.5 EFI SS Brucato, Verado 350 Sci and for next year a Verado 400R. With a 350 Sci it runs 81 mph at 6,550 rpms. Milage 4,7 MPG at 4,000 rpms and 49 mph :) Expected top speed next year approx 88 mph.

Very slick and very fast! I'm searching for the perfect outboard powered v or cat for our inland lake. At age 56, I'm done with being a contortionist and working on big blocks.

Hi!

Hope you are all well :)

New interior by Nor-Tech is on its way soon. The interior will be inspired by Shelby Classic car interior.

Love it. Has the same paint as my old Sonic, which I just spent the day standing on my head winterizing today.

Me too! If only I could afford it. One of those engines costs more than my boat.

That is my favorite Skater Paint job on a sweet , sweet boat.

Great thread. Didn't see any Sonic's represented so I thought I better drop in. '88 33 SE. Brought her home new in 88 and have never been able to part with her. (Yes that goes for the boat and the babe)

Nice Sonic. Nice hardware. Your boats hull design originated from a larger hull mold, which was built & designed by three well known offshore racers, in the 70's, in Miami. It was called an "MSV", the three initials of the original designers.

This is my 1981 Python Vyper. It was owned by a friend of the family when I was a kid. The last time I saw it was 1992. 25 years later and I found it!! Now she’s mine and The plan is to restore and update technology. The boat is named”Tiger Toy”. The last owner removed the name, but I know it, and will repaint it just the way it was after the restore. If anyone knows anything about the history of python or this 20ft model, please shoot me a text, or call me 586-785-9149. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you sure it's a 1981? Everything I can find says they were made from 1991 to 2005.
