Which 41 is/was the fastest of all time?

What kind of power/drives? What kind of setup?

I guess it would make sense to say pleasure or race.

Not exactly sure, but, I think it was the J.H. Electric boat. kidapache, on here, use to own it. He has owned several of the light and fast 41's.

Star Chaser will run 104.6 with 890hp fuel injected NA 598" #6 drives. Any other non supercharged 41 Apaches running close to that or faster?

So Star chaser is the fastest at 104.6mph?

Have any ever run more than that? Someone mentioned somehting in the teens..... which boat would that be?

I am getting a ride on a 41 (so I was told by the owner) this summer and apparently the boat will run 100mph with Chief 1000's and 6's.

These are my favourite v-bottms by far so Im always interested in learning more.

Erics boat pulled away from me a few times when I was running 60-70 mph in the NYC poker run like I was standing still. It's a runner.

BTW, some folks are claiming the new 54' Apache is running 120 mph. :dupe: Can't imagine that's realistic though.

I dont think mine is the fastest but with equal power it would be close.MM boat with all most the same hp runs the same as mine with #6 640hp will go 84mph with about 750 92mph 890hp 104.6 this is with the same set of propellers. If i took the fresh water cooling off it would save 300lbs of weight and some power to run rec pumps.

star chaser so far is the fastest natural asp boat. Eric has the set up. E did you set the drive height higher then when we sold it to you?

but really who cares there are 38 bad boys, fountains, OL doing 113 with 525s and 87 gas in 6 footers as well.

if you want something historic / timeless/et al. do you really want to be hammering on a older hull over 100s in some real swell? prob not.

And there it is J.H. Electric. In all its Glory. As far as the 47...KEMOSABE!!! I don't know the speed numbers, but, it is into the triple digits as it Negative Reaction. And, for the 36's, the "Drillin' It" 36 that is for sale on OSO runs in the triple digits. I have been on Drillin' It and Negative Reaction at over 100mph.

The B boat Geronimo runs over 100. I don't know the exact number. I can find out. The gentleman who owns both is Kirk Smith. The Drillin It boat is just wicked. If you have access to the Key West Poker Run videos in 1999 2000 2001, its on there. It airs out nicely. It too has a cabin. When he had larger power than what is in there, it went somewhere around 110. The boat is just SUPER CLEAN.

All the big numbers posted on these 41's are all race boats with no cabins etc. Does Geronimo have a cabin? So I wonder what a stripped down (light) and cut-down deck (like a Gladiator) on a 36' has the potential to do....hmmmmm...

Our 41 pleasure with full cabin, Chief 850's and #3A's runs consistently at 84/85. Said to have done 90 but we have yet to see it ourselves. And yes, a wave crusher and we don't have many who can keep up with us in 3-4's.

Thanks for the info Chief, it just goes to show how much difference a little weight and balance can make in a boat!!! It would be interesting to see what a 41' would run with some of todays technologies, even a step or two added in... From what I'm told Bob Saccenti's Chief runs 7-10 MPH faster than any pleasure 41' with the same power and it wasn't a light one.

Figure some of the race Apaches weigh in around 8500-9500 lbs and Apache Warrior weighed in somewhere around 12-13K DRY!:ack2:

I honestly do not want to go any faster than we are now when we get in big water. That may be due to the fact that this is all new for us (going fast in big water period). It is so intense yet exciting all at the same time. Not sure which emotion wins over the other. Maybe once we've had the boat for a few more years, push her a little more I may be ready to go faster in rough water. Right now I'll stick with that 72-76MPH range.

I was not in the boat when my father ran Kerbeck, it was my Uncle Barry and my father in the boat that day, the Hairy Canary did get around him that day when my Uncle was in the boat. According to my Uncle, that was the day Kerbeck said to my father, "I didn't think you went that fast." To which my father replied, "I didn't you you went that fast either." - all in fun. They were running 85/84 mph that day. (I will talk to my Uncle about this more tomorrow) I thought Kerbeck had beaten him by a 1/2 boat length, but that is not historically accurate.

I do not know Mr. Kerbeck, but I will give him his due, he liked to race. Even when he had that red 32' hot-rod Excalibur he would race anybody, I was in high school then and would be at the Washington Ave. beach in Margate (Lucy the elephant's beach) watching him turn around to race everyone.

When my father had the Hairy Canary, that is what we used to do, sit out in the ocean off that beach and wait for a hot-rodder to pass us by, then roll up along side and wave let's go. You knew was the fastest before you got to the Steel Pier. 42' Cigarette Smokin,40' Fountain Fanny Doctor, 33' Fountain Scrap It, 28' Cigarette Razz Ma Tazz were just a small sample of the boats I can rember from back in the day that we raced that had names; we raced anyone that would give us a go, I miss those days.

I was in the boat the day we ran Stella (SC Hot), it was two separate race off of Margate/Ventnor, we beat him both times, maybe he (Stella) was not running right, I don't know, it wasn't that close. He is a good guy, and I like his boat (SC Hot).

Mancini (forget his first name), had a 38' Cigarette that would just kick the sh*t out most of those bigger boats, he dusted the Hairy Canary as did some other boats. Win or lose (didn't like losing but didn't cry over it either), didn't matter at least you got in a few races, and that made it fun.

There was one more Apache back then I do remember, it was a 45 or 47 sit down version, with triple engines. I thought it had "Fire and Ice" on the side of it. It ran on race fuel back then because I remember smelling the exhaust, when it idled past us by the Longport Bridge. That Apache was a faster than any Magnum I knew, including the Hairy Canary. There was another 41' which I thought was Alez Vite in south Jersey in the early 90's, we ran that one too, it was underpowered at the time.

This boat was in New Jersey sometime in the 1990's, specifically the Somer's Point/Ocean City area. We raced it from the Ninth Street Bridge heding south towards the 34th Street Bridge in flat water, it did not have 2 x 1350 hp at the time. It was lucky if it had 2 x 800 hp during that I didn't undertstand why the Apache wasn't just driving by us - I had told my father just before the race started that he, my father, was going to get his ass kicked by this boat, but just the opposite happened. You never know until you roll up along side of someone how fast they really are, there was a mystery back then of who went how fast, before Serious Offshore, and OffshoreOnly took some of the mystery out it.

I just spoke with my Uncle, Barry Hills. My father, Barry and his wife (my Aunt) Vicki were going north in the Ocean towards Absecon Inlet (inlet between Atlantic City and Brigintine) when the Island Runner was heading out of the inlet traveling south. My father did one of loops (U-turns) and went after Mr. Kerbeck. According to Uncle my father eased up along side, so there was not a head start by either boat then the race was on. My father passed Kerbeck and held the lead, Kerbeck could not get around him. My Aunt Vicki was in the front passenger bolster, and my Unckle ion the back bench seat. This race happened before my father put in a grab handle for the back seat passenger's to secure themselves when racing. My Uncle said it was choppy, and the Hairy Canary was airborne quite a bit, he felt as if he where going to fly out of the back of the boat, which to this day he will never forget. Keep in mind, my father would not back out it in a race like that, but he also knew how to drive that Magnum.

They raced in choppy water, it was a close race, but there was no doubt who had won the race that day. But this was not the day that that Mr.Kerbeck and my spoke - after the race Mr. Kerbeck kept traveling south, and did not stop for chit chat.

I was in Geronimo in ths picture running from Indian River Inlet back to Ocean City with Jenny's Express and the Helo chasing us snapping pictures the whole way back.... I can tell you I have driven a few cats over the years one of them up to 146MPH and have ridden in several more, each one was a rush, but this was one of my favorite boat rides ever!!!! :sifone:

Funny story after I posted the above and looked at the picture ....

That's "Tantra" in the front Port Bolster, you see his arm hanging out of the cockpit.... I'm in the rear Starboard 6pack...

We were clipping along and the guys in the Helo are pointing out to the side of the boat like something is wrong, Brian (owner) is coming off plane and we are all thinking the side of the boat maybe blown out the way the guys were reacting....

we slowed down looked over the side and the middle piece of the rubrail had popped out, Kent was holding it up as not to loose it more.

My father, Barry and his wife (my Aunt) Vicki were going north in the Ocean towards Absecon Inlet (inlet between Atlantic City and Brigintine) when the Island Runner was heading out of the inlet traveling south.

My Uncle said it was choppy, and the Hairy Canary was airborne quite a bit, he felt as if he where going to fly out of the back of the boat, which to this day he will never forget. Keep in mind, my father would not back out it in a race like that, but he also knew how to drive that Magnum.
.

I give your Aunt Vicki lots of credit, lord knows my wife would be punching my left arm/shoulder to get me to slow down.... I call her my rev. limiter, it kicks in around 75 mph...:ack2:

In hindsight she probably keeps me from having to do some rebuilds... lol

Smarty
05-27-2009, 02:59 PM
The front passenger seat in the Magnum had floor cut-outs and and made you fell secure, that back seat was hardly anything. My Aunt just did not want to upset my father that day by asking him to slow down. I do not remember her ever getting on that boat again after that Sunday outing.

Many a girlfriend of mine became the rev limiter you speak of, my mother did the same to father that you speak of, "my wife would be punching my left arm/shoulder to get me to slow down." Exactly the same, too funny. My mother stopped boating once my father got the Magnum.

Wicked Won did 109-113, the black firewater boat is now a 6 pak boat the Herb did, it was originally the "Apache Trader", Jerrys saber is just over 100. The lipship boat went to england with no motors then the motors wound up over there as well, boat took on tons of water at the dock one day with a broken gimble, not total submerge but very close.

the quick tempered 47 with half cabin and 1300 sterlings did 117, there is a video somewhere of it on you tube.

and just for the record when paul did the 119 in the 41, I talked to him after and he said the boat was crazy loose, be careful in them much over. wicked won also had boxes which kept it a little more planted.

I am not buying that thing went 119....I will argue this until I am blue in the face...I have been an Apache guy for a long long time and not buying it....I will say it again there isn't one out there breaking 120 and if there's a 41 Apache breaking 110 I will pay to see it!!!!

not debating that fact, with no pic it is just one persons word. when it was done it was with 1300 and psi blowers so not impossible. the numbers would work as well as the 47 did 117 with 1300 sterlings and a half cabin, so the weight difference alone makes it plausible.

I think my in-laws Bayliner might qualify... It has a 305 small block with an alpha drive. I took it out on Monday with the family and we were cruising at a whopping 20 mph @ 3500 rpms!! :drool5::03::leaving:

I have the answer!!!! took a minute to think of it. the answer lies in where the motors are...there is only so much room in the back of the boat. If we set up 6 1500 sterlings, we could get moving.. Just mount them like this..

Warpath on it's best day with him and Benny ran 93!!!

Warpath after the rerig and 6's and Cobras ran approx 103-104

It was running 1000 SC Mercs when Pete had it after he replaced the Cobras with them....Last ones that I am basing the top speed off was Zul 1000+ SC the 653 CI ones lots of torque and pull!!!! All the later ones had a very high x some of them were too high towards the end of the run

There was an article in one of the boating magazines about the transformation of that 41' - bow rider, renovation, ect. I have the magazine (not sure if it HotBoat, PowerBoat, Extreme Boat, Poker Runs - I used to get them all), not sure where it is, but I do remember the pictures, and the article, and it did discuss why the owner wanted the deck cut out. Why does it take so much power to get a 41 over 100mph? Is it the design of the boat or the weight?

A lot to do with the weight. My boat is about 11,000lbs with 3 people about 100 gallons of gas. And the boat needs to be set up rite.

I will call you soon give you a good starting point. The #5 drives are good start. Need the drives high and ext boxes. 1.5 gear will work. Need to dyno your motors have to know how much power they make. I would turn the props in. Rake of the props 15 degree.:cheers2:Prop shafts above the bottom.

Had a legacy to 105 this weekend with lots more to go and I gotta say I needed more seat time to feel comfortable in it, they ride flat as a pancake! The boat has seen 127 with the 1075s in it, ride nothing like apaches that's for sure....!

Yes, it would be a "Quality" education. But what would the name of the course be??????

And how many repeats would you get for the Masters and PHD courses????

If you can only get 98.99mph out of yours sorry to here that with 950hp weather you owned 3 or 10 apaches. Mine with less than 1000hp will run past 100mph with 960hp every time. Just had a run around nyc today did very good for a resin buckit. Up river or down river will run over 100mph!!!!. I have video of it...........:driving:

Eric you have a fast boat and I know it was fast when it was StarChaser and the Montevecchio's ran it....you are one of the lucky one's because Paully is right it takes a lot of power to push these things but once you get into the 80+ range these things really come to life!!!!
