Ive got a 24x24x30" 175lb crate that needs to go to Anchorage, I called the local PacMail store and they said the best they can do is $1,100:ack2:

Any suggestions?

Check with some local freight companies. I just had a transmission shipped to me from Colorado for about $200 and they had it here in 3 days.

Check freightquote.com I think thats the correct site. but they get prices of different companys to ship your product at the best price.

Call a national freight company and set up an account. I get 70% discounts and don't ship that much.

The 70% figure is about correct for an average discount to land business. The big boys now are getting as high as 85%.

They're usually not familiar with shipping those kinds of things. I'd bet all they did was put in dimensions and weight on their FedEx/UPS/DHL quote system and it kicked back that number.

I'll second the recommendation to use freightquote.com I shipped an auto trans (225lbs on pallet) to CT from FL for under $200 last year. For the most savings I did have to bring the pallet to the freight carrier, but they forklifted it off the trailer and it was out of my hands.
