3 Exposed to Rabies After Wild Bobcat Terrorizes Town

Three people in the central Arizona community of Cottonwood were exposed to rabies after being attacked by a wild bobcat.

It all began when the animal attacked and scratched a woman who had gotten out of her car after thinking she had hit it.

A short time later, Cottonwood police got a report of a bobcat acting aggressively toward a woman outside a Pizza Hut.

Then, about an hour later, the bobcat wandered into the Chapparal Bar on Main Street forcing patrons up on their barstools.

Two men who were bitten before police shot and killed the animal in the parking lot.

Test later confirmed it was rabid.

Rabies is an acute viral infection that is transmitted to humans by a bite or by the exposure of broken skin to an infected animal's saliva, the National Institutes of Health reported in its Web Site. There is no cure for rabies once symptoms develop. But, if vaccinated promptly after being bitten — preferably within 24 hours but certainly within 72 hours – the disease can usually be prevented.

I'm really stunned that nobody was packin'... I've been to bars just outside Phoenix that have a gun check when you walk in the door. Unless they've changed the law recently, AZ requires you to carry your firearm displayed (e.g. hip holster) and you need a special permit for concealed. Most of AZ is still the "Wild West". And thank god for that... :D

as long as I am in the bobcat and not on the ladder ! I was driving over an old cistern and it broke ,(did not know it was there) the bobcat tilted down into the hole full of muddy water about 6 foot deep, I thought what a fugged up way to die, but it wedged in tight, and one more horror story ,same job, I was demo-ing a pool and there was only one way in and out between these two buildings, someone left a shovel (mine otherwise I would have ran it over)) right in the path, I jumped out leaving the bobcat running (a no-no) and my key chain caught on the right control handle and the machine ran over my right leg and smashed me against the building, started climbing up my leg when the key chain broke, had tire marks on my leg for days.
