View Full Version : The best song ever?

Dude! Sweet!
03-18-2009, 01:56 AM
I was just watching Bob Dylan on TV and got to thinking about Hunter Thompson saying "Mr. Tambourine Man" was the best song, ever... I don't agree, but I'm currently incapable of confirming my opinion on what the best song ever is (Currently pretty sure its "Long way to the top" by AC/DC or "I made Linda Lovelace Gag" by David Allen Coe) but I'm also fairly loaded, so I'll put it to you guys...

What's the best song EVER?

If I was stranded on an island, I'd probably go with the Stones' "Brown Sugar." From the first two guitar notes to the last, it's got great lyrics, awesome beat, even a kickass sax solo. Ultra-tight -- not one more note or measure than what was needed...it's pretty near perfect, and captures them at the top of their form.

Off topic but I heard about this on the radio this morning. Apparently Bob Dylan's neighboring in Malibu are complaining about the smell coming from a port a john he has outside. I don't understand how someone with that much money just can't pay to empty it or be considerate

What criteria does a song have to have to be the best ever? Something you can listen to over and over? thats lasted for years? that everybody knows and likes? something that makes you smile? something that stirs us emotions? any kind of emotions?

Back in the 70's .. my choice might have been Wildfire (Michael Martin Murphy)... or Someone Saved my Life Tonight (Elton John)

80's ... probably something by Metallica ... Nothing Else Matters, Unforgiven/Unforgiven II

Hey in the 60's I think my favorite would have been Happy Birthday ... or a Christmas jingle ... possibly even the Sesame Street theme :sifone:

I'd have a hard time narrowing that down to even one artist, let alone one song. Pantera one day. Madonna the next. A little Pink once in awhile, then some Mudvayne. How about some Saliva or maybe Neil Diamond? I can pretty much listen to anything and enjoy it.

Oh Honey ... I know Would (:D) .. and Rooster, and Dem Bones, and Grind, and Man in the Box, and Sunshine, and Put You Down, and Man in the Hole, and Bleed the Freak, and It Aint Like That. Would is definitely one of my favorites but you hear it on the radio/cover bands more often than the rest .. well ... except for Man in the Box (it probably gets the most air play). I normally like the stuff you dont hear as often ... cuz then when you hear it, it means something

and I saw Rush in concert in ... hmm .. 1983 maybe? One of the best live shows Ive been to. Actually, the only thing that I truly remember is the drum solo

I mean, "the best song ever"....
WOW, that is a tall order.
I'll put up "Heaven and Hell" Black Sabbath - love how it starts out slow, and slowly changes tempo through the song - genius.
Rush has to be in here someplace.
And, I made a special run out tonight to pick up a copy of Kid Rock's Devil without a cause because my old on got destroyed. Don't ask.

I recently had a discussion with a good buddy of mine about Ozzy Sabbath vs. Dio Sabbath. The vocal styles are totally different. It's funny, I don't really like Dio singing the Ozzy Sabbath, but on the whole I like more Dio Sabbath songs more than I like Ozzy Sabbath songs (with the exception fo Supernaut, which could be... the best song ever!)

For me, it's a toss up between Live Evil and Vol. 4 as my favorite Sabbath albums, but I probably like Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell as much as anything on Vol 4.

This ones a bit tough to nail down. Hell every day I listen to something I haven't heard in forever and think that song was the best.
Might be easier if you broke it down a bit. Perhaps, Best song by a particular band.
On that note, I just dusted off some old vinyls I had hanging around in my garage. Haven't had a record player in years, but was just given one that was heading for the dump. I randomly grabbed an album out of my collection, and it was AC/DC's "If You want Blood You've Got it" album. And on that album is a song I had not heard in years that kicks serious azz.
It's called "The Jack" You wont hear that on any radio station.. That would be my vote for the best AC/DC song. Now next time I've had too many and the albums come back out, I'm sure to have a new favorite song as well. :biggrinjester:

Its funny I was just going to mention that two bands, noticeablby abscent were the Who and the Doors...

Just heard "Can I kick it" by Tribe Called Quest last night on my iPod. Another awesome song. Always said that if I could ever have a movie about my life, that song would be the one that played at the end as I walked off into the sunset...

There are certain songs on here that automatically start playing in my head as soon as I read the title... This one has to be very close to the top of the list. I bet I haven't heard this song in 4 years and as soon as I read the title the words "The screen door slams..." popped into my head.

I hate his politics but love his music. Love him or Hate him Springsteen, and specifically BTR, changed music forever. He has sold out every venue he has played for nearly 4 decades, and the ONLY other person that can say that is Elton.

Lyrics for: "That Smell"

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Whiskey bottles and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
One more drink fool, will drown you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Now they call you Prince Charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
Say you'll be all right come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Hey, you're a fool you
Stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before

One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, Lord might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Tracy Bonham - Behind Every Good Woman

probably not a well known song but I love the lyrics :D My friends thought it was my theme song for awhile.

Many muscles has the man
Each one has a reason
Many women felt his hand
Each one trying to please him
Imagine one day the tables could turn
Imagine one day the tables would turn
Behind every good woman lies a trail of men
Shame shame for the rooster. hi five for the hen
Dont ask where shes going dont ask where shes been
Behind every good woman lies
A trail of men.
Something tells me that snow white
Is smarter than we think.
Seven men at perfect height
Seven noses pink
Could happen one day the tables could turn
Imagine one day the tables would turn
Behind every good woman lies a trail of men.
Shame shame for the rooster. hi five for the hen.
Dont ask where shes going dont ask where shes been
Behind every good woman lies a trail of men.
Behind every good woman lies a trial of men.
Shame shame for the rooster nudge nudge for the hen
Dont know where where it started or when it will end
Behind every good woman lies
A trail of men. a trail of men
You wouldnt believe the mess shes in

Well all those Females you´ve posted... I give credit but there´s one female voice over them all.
Alison Moyet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaHuzkyurC0&feature=related).
Not the Best song IMO but living my teen years in the mid 80´s and late teens in the end the New Age/ Electronic has a place.

There´s so much good songs, depending on the occasion it can be; Pink Floyds Comfortably Numb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQWszrZHBPI&feature=related), Another Brick in the wal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_bvT-DGcWw)l, White Lions When the Children cry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptLYG_p__30), Metallicas version of Turn the Page (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOibtqWo6z4) or Alphavilles Forever Young (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7CuJ8cR9sg)
Phil Collins Another day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfZqXLnBYb4) and let´s put some Miami vice in too...In The air tonigh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=manxPVTLth8&feature=PlayList&p=661CC1AEE50C4DE4&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=1)t..
Yes seems I´m a bit on the melancholy ballad side...

Let us include Deep Purples When a Blind Man cries (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAZyjARWKzM) and Led Zep´s Stairway to heaven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81eSIwsLcWg)

In fact when I heard while working as a DJ a good friend since age 5 had died in a motorcycle accident at age 19 I put this last song on the table and called the evening quits.

All these songs mean a lot to me and brings memories I can relate to.

I can't believe I haven't seen this thread before now.

I think Buoy said it best when he said this is a powerful question that is VERY tough to answer. I've read some darn good suggestions and have a few of my own that should and would qualify. I'm a music lover to the bone.

I have some suggestions of my own but think it's a moot point since most of them have probably already been mentioned. I will throw this out though. I truly feel that if a poll was given, everyone in the world voted, the winning song would not have been recorded after 1990. I truly believe that the 30 years prior to that were the years that the truly "good" stuff will go down in history.

You'll notice that I started the thread and I've already voted for about 30 different songs... I completely understand where everyone's coming from on the choice. I couldn't decide. It's subjective and situations. That's one of the reasons I was so amazed that Thompson could just throw down the gauntlet with "Mr. Tamborine Man"...

Can't believe "Brandy" wasn't mentioned...:sifone:

I have this on a CD in my truck.

As I hung - up the phone it occured to me
He'd grown up just like me
Yeah my boy was just like me....:D

This too.

Also some Gordon Lightfoot.

I do this thing where I'll burn a CD, and it'll go straight from Iron Maiden Run to the Hills, to Brandy, to WALK by Pantera...
You never know whats going to hit you next.

My favorite song this week is "Faithless" off S&A by RUSH.
The cymbal splash at 2:20 into the song just puts it absolutely over the top.
And I was a guitar player.
Song just blew me away the first time I heard it, and that doesn't happen very often.

So you know exactly what I'm talking about on the cymbal thing at 2:20 in. The first time I caught it, it was just a "Damn Neil is incredible" moment.

Yes, it is a VERY powerful song, blew me away the first time I heard it.

I'm on an AC/DC 'Shot Down in Flames' kick right now...

Then again, looking at these posts, Bad Brains "Banned in DC" just popped into my head as well.

We saw an AC/DC tribute band last weekend. You would have thought they were the original band. They were awesome!

I grew up sharing a room with my sister. She was 6 yrs older. I probably learned more than my parents could have dreaded. She graduated in 79. Bowie and Grand Funk Railroad. And I loved Frampton. I loved him in Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band....Aerosmith was in it to! :26:
And we gotta give props to the Bee Gees while were at it......:rofl:

Grand Funk... the wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner, the bong rattling bass of Mel Shacher and the competent drumming of Don Brewer... Awww yeah!

How about a dose of 80`s rock ?

Anyone ever heard of the band "Dirty Looks" ?

I think they were one of the most under-appreciated bands of the 80`s.

Song ..........." Cool From The Wire " Great tune !
