The yellow US-1 boat with Red head dress.... It was Warpath 1 then Warpath 2 then the rabbit then I believe the pleasure boat and then the banner boat

Stinson if this is true how can the Hull # of the banner boat be 004? Could the rabbit have been built after the banner boat along with the other yellow hull race boats Pred, Starchaser, etc.? Does anyone know if the Rabbit had the new or old transom? This would let us know as i am positive that the banner boat had the old transom, thus if the rabbit had the new transom it must have been after the banner boat.

Some useless info and not sure if it applies to the 41's but Bobby's boats were numbered as such;

My boat: APH36029J495

It was the 29th boat out of the mold, built in October 1994, but was a 1995 model.. APH 36' 029 boat out of mold, built in Oct 94 , 95 shows it is a 95 model...

This is the way Bob numbered his Apaches according to Coast Guard regulations.:cheers2:

Mine is APH36028H495 So does that mean mine was popped right in front of yours? Also, what does the J on yours and the H on mine signify? How many total 36's popped? 63 or so?

Maybe eventually we can do the owner registry cronologically off of the HULL ID

I probably have the order incorrect but out of the first 5 or 6 one was a pleasure boat....Hope this helps....its hard to retain this plethora of Apache knowledge in correct order.....Tommy Evans is probably the best historian out of all of us. You can contact him through Gail Paik....

They were 75 original 41's built while Apache was in business at either 188th St or Hollywood FL location

1 boat has 2 HIN and 2 41's are stamped #74 hence the reason Ghost Runner has 2 HIN #'s

A bunch of posts back I posted a link to video I uploaded on youtube from the 86' worlds, I believe it's the rabbit. They called it the rabbit because it was a light lay-up and "hopped" and was flighty (as you can see in the video), at least that's the rumor I heard. :driving:

Ok all I can use for a comparison is Desert Warrior which had the bow tank that I never used and the floor tank which I think was still 120 gals if memory serves me correct and Geronimo which had the saddles and floor tank

Desert Warrior w/Chief 800SC at 3500-4000 cruise zero boost burned about 40 gals an hour at wide open I think it was roughly 60-65....

Geronimo w/DSM 1200SC at 4000 cruise zero boost was again approx 40-50 gals/hr BUT at WOT it burned 80 gals/hr

Now remember thats per engine each scenario so double the gals/hr to get your total fuel burn!!!!

So 80 gallons HR each = ( 80 + MPH ) average

Apache Heritage!

Was Apache Heritage a 47 cut down to 45 correct? Quick question on the 45's why did they build only one? RDS seems to have ran great and the power to weight ratio would be better then a 47 or 41 right?

I also could be all wrong to....thanks for any information. I am almost finished with uploading my pictures from the 86-89 worlds any suggestions on a website where everyone can easily view them?

I thought Apache Heritage was a 47' that was cut down to 45' to be able to see over the bow, and the number 50 was just the number given to the boat? see this post http://www.seriousoffshore.com/forums/showpost.php?p=374308&postcount=1664

Sean Stinson

It was not a 50 it looks long because the freeboard was cut down

Chris
01-21-2010, 10:08 AM
The Heritage was not shortened. They took the deck off and cut the hull sides down. If you look at the bow from the side, where the keel curves upward, then cut a foot off the top, you effectively shorten the boat.

The Kid Apache 45 was full-height and was shortened by damming up the mold- it's 2' shorter at the transom end. Since no deck mold existed for the 47, the boats were built with sectioned decks. They were put together with a bow piece, an engine compartment and cockpit piece and a center. All molded out of the 41 deck mold.

Sean Stinson
01-21-2010, 10:15 AM
That side part of the boat is the freeboard section which when cut down would obviously shorten the boat.....RDS as Chris states was built in a dammed mold to shorten the length but not the freeboard!!!!!

Sean Stinson
01-21-2010, 10:17 AM
The deck was usually sectioned into the 41 deck mold in front of the fairing and the rest was either added to the engine room and/or the cockpit!!!!!

Sean, any idea if/when they damned the 47' to make the 45', did they add rocker to the rear quarter of the boat? Maybe 2ft wasn't enough?

From what I know of the 36' (damned 41'), when they got the plug from Ben they had to build rocker into the bottom so it functioned correctly.:driving:

Great story from another thread elsewhere about Howard from Howards son Les back in Jan 2006. (http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/general-boating-discussion/120011-save-old-race-boats-21.html)

I happened to stumble onto this forum and was pretty surprised to see my fathers name (Howard Quam) and our old race boats as a topic of interest to anyone.

Most of the information I have observed posted on this websight in regard to my father and his old boats is inaccurate to a large degree.

Ed Cozzi it is nice to see you are still alive and kicking but your memory is failing you. Memory loss is the first sign of senilty Ed! LOL LO LLOL Eddie it has been so many years and so many boats ago perhaps I can help you and refresh your memory. And perhaps help someone who now owns one of our old boats.

My fathers first offshore powerboat race was in a 28 ft. magnum in Key West in 1975 I still have the race program and many pictures. I was his throttle man and Phil Dipasqualie was our navigator. The name of that boat was "Balls and all" . The APBA soon made us change the name of that boat for obvious reasons.

We raced the 28 magnum for about year under the new name of "Razzle Dazzle" and my dad soon moved up to the open class I think in the 77 or 78 season I still have the records and can check. Meanwhile I continued to race and drive the 28 foot magnum in the national APBA production class.

My fathers first 38 Bertram and the first boat ever to be named "Flap Jack"was an all red one purchased from Preston Henn. Erroll Lanier was my dads first pro throttle man. Erroll only helped my dad for I think one race and was under contract to Preston. My father then hired Keith Hazell to throttle the Bertram for the 77 or 78 season I would have to dig up the old records but I do still have them. He and Keith didn't race very long before they had a disagreement over prize money. Back then you actually received prize money if you did well. 25K for first place as a matter of fact.

His next throttle man was Smiley Johns who was fresh from the modified class as was keith Hazell. Smiley was racing a red 28 foot magnum and did very well so he wanted less than Keith and hired Smiley. Smiley and my dad prompty stuffed Preston's red 38 Bertram in the 77 or 78 Benihana race in Jersey race while in first place. The Bertram delaminated in that crash and was never seaworthy again I don't think? It then sat in our marina for years. My father refused to repair it and left it front and center in the shop to remind Smiley every day how he had ruined his boat. LOL

My father in 1978 then had Bobby Moore and Jack Stuteville build him a new 38 Bertram all white with red stripes. It was also named "Flap Jack" and was the fastest and strongest vee bottom in the world when built. Keth Hazell was the throttle man because he was the best at the time with the difficult to handle 38 Bertrams and because Keith was the only one who could talk Bertram into building the 38 foot raceboats since their main sorce of revenue was selling high end pleasure boats.

As a matter of fact Bertram would only build you a 38 Betram racer in 1978 if you agreed to buy three at a time. So Keith found buyers for the other two and supervised the construction of the second "Flap jack". My dad and Keith raced that 38 Bertram in the 1979 season with Smiley as the crew chief and I was still racing the old and slow 1976 28 foot yellow magnum.

In the 1979 season my father in the second 38 Bertram named "Flap Jack" finished second in the national championship to Betty Cook in the last race of the season in San Francisco. The race was pretty controversial and was black flagged as soon as Betty pulled in front due to a mysterious phantom fog. We lost the protest and my father and Keith always felt cheated out of the 1979 National Championship.

Right after the 1979 season my dad sold the white and red 38 Bertram to an Englishman whose name escapes me at the moment for 125K. It was raced very successfully in Europe for many years and I don't know what ever happened to it after that.

My father then purchased Betty Cooks second wooden Cougar cat for the 1980 season but commissioned a complete redesign which took some time. In the meantime my dad purchased another 38 Bertram this time it was pre-owned. I think he purchased it from Sandy Satullo and it might have been named "Copper Kettle" before we painted it all black with silver stripes and re named it "Flap Jack". I would have to dig up the records to be sure what it's previous name was? But it was the third and final 38 Bertram named "Flap JacK" ever owned or raced by my father. It was a heavy and slow sled literally indestructible.

This final 38 Bertram was driven by my dad and throttled by Smiley Johns and I was the navigator for the 1980 season. On May 10th 1980 at 12:30 PM in the Bacardi Miami race just ouside of Government cut we barrelled rolled the Bertram and my father was thrown out of the boat and pinned under the boat where I fished him out and attempted to revive Smiley who was fatally injured and died in my arms. The boat was undamaged like I said it was a tank.

Sometime thereafter my father hired Eddie Cozzie to throttle that indestructible black and silver 38 Bertram for the remainder of the 1980 season. I was devasted over Smiley's death and sat the reat of the season out.

For 1981 my father decided to throttle all his boats himself and Eddie Cozzi helped out as crew chief until Eddie left to throttle another boat. Until we retired in our last offshore powerboat race in 1987 my father throttled all his own boats. I drove when time permitted and many others filled in over the years as drivers including Rocky Aoki.

I drove the black 38 Bertram for the 1981 season while my father throttled while we waited for the first of many cats to be built. In 1982 I believe my dad sold this the third and last 38 Bertram named "Flap Jack" to Marshall Ives a Miami lawyer for 5K without engines. In the mean time Eddie and I almost burned the boat and ourselves to death while transfering fuel one day. The boat was undamaged. Nothing could harm this boat I mean nothing. LOL

Anyway that is the 38 Bertram "Flap Jack" history. My father and I raced offshore powerboats from November 1975 in Key west until our last race in the Spring of 1987 at the Miami to Nassau to Miami endurance race in a 41 foot apache.

If I can be of any help with any of our old boats email me at lquam2411@aol.com

The boat in post 2329 is an Apache. The boat in the picture you posted is not a 41' Apache, the two pictures are not of the same boat. I am not sure what the other boat is but Quam raced a lot of Bertram's so it could be one. Nice pic though!

Great story from another thread elsewhere about Howard from Howards son Les back in Jan 2006. (http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/general-boating-discussion/120011-save-old-race-boats-21.html)

I spoke with Les Quam. He is going to see if he has time to register and post. There was only ever one Apache Flap Jack and that is the boat in the photo in post 2329. Here is what Les had to say, "That picture was taken in July 1987 in the Miami to Nassau to Miami race. My Father Howard is on the throttles, I am driving, and Brad Halpin is the crew chief in the third spot."

So I think this is one more race setup to add to the list!

The boats he raced werent his. Years ago he showed me the photo from the chopper were he's standing on the bottom of the hull, waiting to be picked up. Supposedly they were leading the race easily when it sounded like a bomb went off, imediately the water started coming in, so they aimed towards a sandbar. he said at one point he looked back and the motors were under water, even the distrubutors (I think they were magnetos), only the horns of the Fuel injection were out and they were still running, but eventually they cut out. According to him, after some arguing they took the hull back to Jack Kramer and Mark Macmanus where it was quickly dissapeared., And they got another hull made, at cost. He's been looking for the photo if he finds it ill post it. Ill also ask the name of the boat.
Found out from a good source. The name of the boat was Flap Jack. Supposedly one of the lightest 41's ever made. Im preatty sure Quam didnt own it by then. The boat was dissapeared assumed distroyed. When this happened the paint job had been changed and it wasnt being raced under Flap Jack anymore, I dont know What it was called when it broke yet.

Chill Out Warrior is now Island Racer, Dr. was that the year AC was really rough?

Geronimo36

Warrior became Chill Out Warrior, then Island Racer I think. The "Warrior" graphic is exactly the same between the two with the difference being Chill Out on one from what I remember. I could be wrong, it's been a while seen I saw the vids.

I hear ya Garry, I too thought they were running really strong thru that chop!!

I really liked the head/head battle in the atlantic city race with Predator... The camera angle with the sun light was a little rough but they were going head/head for quite some time!

Wrong!! :sifone::sifone: Ferrari stopped using the word "Spyder" after the 365gts/4 otherwise known as the Daytona Spyder. All the later drop tops are known as "Spiders" with an i such as the 348, 355, 360, 430. The cars prior to the 365gts/4 are with a y. I know and follow vintage Ferrari's more than 41's :) So Doc do you have a Spyder or a Spider?

great pic of Jester. I was at the OPA awards last week and people heard about my new ride. I had someone came up to me and tell me that Apaches were the best built boats ever made, and walked away. I felt good about that.

Yeah, those comments help offset the ones from haters about "old dogs" and "lead sleds." :)
In my opinion, there are two kinds of boats: Apaches and Non-Apaches. :D
