17th Annual Desert Storm Poker Run and Shootout 2015

Description:

Folks, this is THE see and be seen event in the boating industry! Named "One of the Top Five Poker Runs in the Nation" by Performance Boats Magazine, the 17th Annual Desert Storm Poker Run & Shootout is guaranteed to be a world-class collection of the most prestigious performance boats from across the nation! Running from the heart of Lake Havasu (starting at Site Six off of the island) to Spectator Point, top speeds upwards of 160+ MPH are not uncommon here. 2014's top speed -- a whopping 170 MPH by Gary Smith! All performance boaters are invited to participate! The air will be buzzing with the racers' helicopter teams flying above the boats right above the water.

Kicking off the event on Wednesday is the Annual "Krusin' for Kids" event. Under-privileged and special needs children and adults will be coming from all over the state to have their dreams come true, one 'Kruse' at a time. Volunteer participants will take guests out for a 'Kruse' around the lake, starting at the Nautical Beachfront Resort/Turtle Bar boat docks, and back again to the Nautical's pool area where they will enjoy a fun-filled day created just for them. 'Krusin' for Kids' is hosted by LakeRacer LLC, Teague Custom Marine, and New Horizons.

Wednesday night, LakeRacer LLC presents a silent and live auction at the Desert Storm Open House, hosted by Oregon Custom Marine (1515 Industrial Bl.) Beer and food provided. Proceeds from the auction will go to New Horizons to continue helping families in need. Come meet some of the best people in performance boating you could possibly meet!

The Thursday Desert Storm Street Party located in Lake Havasu's Downtown District is ELECTRIC -- and last year's turnout was over 10,000 people! Many of the boats racing will be on display up and down the boulevard and will take your breath away with their massiveness. Whether you enjoy viewing extreme sport boats or just want to speculate on who will win this year, you do not want to miss out on the excitement of the Thursday night Desert Storm Street Party.

On Friday, see the boats in their full glory on the water at the Desert Storm "Parade of Power" & Poker Run. Over 150 boats participated in last year's event and more are expected for 2015! Drivers will be displaying their boats on parade from Thompson Bay and through the Bridgewater Channel. The best views will be along London Bridge Beach and along the Bridgewater Channel. The event master of ceremonies will be announcing the participants and describing their incredible boats as they pass the park. Live radio broadcast of the event will be on Radio Central as well. Other viewing locations include The Nautical Beachfront Resort, The English Village, and Rotary Beach. After the parade, the drivers will be taking off for the Poker Run, picking up cards at various card stops on the lake. Poker stops include Havasu Springs, Havasu Landing, Thompson Bay, Black Meadow Landing, and Crazy Horse Campground.

Saturday starts the famous and heart-rumbling Desert Storm Shootout, where drivers run a two-mile course starting near the Site Six Launch Ramp south along the California side of the lake. 30 different classes will be competing with over 67 runs, and the speeds are breathtaking! Best viewing for the Shootout will be on the surrounding bluffs on the Island near Site Six to Spectator Point.

NEW FOR 2015 - "POWER IN THE PARK" BEACH PARTY**
In years past, vendors set up at the Nautical Beachfront Resort for a few hours on Friday night. New this year, the event is going to enriched with a two-day "Power in the Park" Beach Party open to the public. Basically, the beach party will extend the Thursday Street Party as vendors and displays can/will move to the London Bridge Beach Park for both Friday and Saturday. A unique banquet will follow the shootout with awards and prizes being presented at the continuing Power Party. The London Bridge Park "Event Village" will feature several activities on Friday including Skyboard Rider shows and an afternoon concert (bands TBA).

Boaters arrive for Desert Storm, mingle at Pirate Cove

Bart Boran, of Utah, hopes to retire in Lake Havasu City someday.

“I came here eight years ago, and I got hooked,” Boran said. He arrived at Pirate Cove Resort in Needles, Calif., on Tuesday for Desert Storm, a four-day gathering of boaters, bikers, poker players and designer car drivers in Havasu.

“I’m here for the poker run,” Boran said. “I’ve been coming for the past eight years, and it’s been awesome.”

Tuesday was the day of the Pirate Cove Resort “Meet and Greet,” where boaters and their families docked off of the Colorado River coastline and enjoy lunch at the resort’s restaurant.

“This is something our family has wanted to do for a long time,” said Mike Ricker, of Sedalia, Mo., “I usually go down to the Lake of the Ozarks, but the Desert Storm Shootout has always been kind of a dream of mine, like a bucket list item.”

The Ozarks has its own shootouts, races between private boats, which sparked his interest in coming to Havasu. While he won’t be competing, he will be an avid spectator, he says.

“I love the Arizona sun. We’ll be staying here the whole week, and taking it in as much as possible. It’s just great to meet new people.”

Pirate Cove owner Art Tate said the meet and greet was an idea he and organizer Jim Nichols had this year. “Before the big activity, we decided to get everyone together, get a bunch of the racers together, get them talking, and let them have lunch together. Some of these people own million-dollar boats, and race them all over the country. This is just for these guys to lay back and rest for the weekend.”

Ed Arnold, director of operations for Pirate Cove, is expecting a big crowd at the resort throughout the week. The cove’s riverbank will give VIPs the chance to test and tune their performance boats, he says. He expects up to 400 boats to be packed into the channel throughout the week as Desert Storm participants arrive, and motorcyclists from throughout the country will be coming for their own events.

“Boaters and bikers are about the same,” Arnold said. “They’re real motorheads. Bikers will walk along the docks and look at the boats, while people who own million dollar boats will come up on land to check out the bikes. It’s a great week for everyone.”

Arnold says that it won’t be the resort’s busiest week of the year, but it will be close. The Cove will hold its own poker run for bikers on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while boaters can enjoy poker games at the resort on Thursday and Friday.

Desert Storm will begin in earnest Thursday, with a boat show and a street party on McCulloch Boulevard. The boat show will be from 9 a.m. to noon, and the party will take place from noon to 9:30 p.m.

Poker players and event-participants must register at McCulloch Boulevard in the Springberg McAndrew Park on Thursday.

Desert storm saw ‘excellent atmosphere,’ little trouble

By BRANDON MESSICK TODAY'S NEWS-HERALD

Desert Storm drew upward of 20,000 spectators this weekend, and according to organizers, it was the most successful year the event has had in the past 10 years.

“We had a wonderful event,” said organizer Jim Nichols, of Lake Racer LLC. According to Nichols, 177 boats participated in Desert Storm, 40 of which competed in the “shootout” races on Saturday. Desert Storm brought 800 participants and sponsors, and according to Nichols, Thursday’s street party was one of the best ones the event has ever held.

“The crowd seemed to stay with us all day long,” Nichols said. “It seemed like everyone was just out to enjoy themselves. We had a little rain in the middle, but it didn’t seem to deter anyone.”

Nichols says that there was only one criminal incident at Desert Storm, that he knows of. In that instance, he says, the police responded promptly and decisively.

“Everyone was very easygoing, and it was an excellent atmosphere. Jim Russell and his capabilities helped considerably.”

Jim Russell, of DSM Events, coordinated and helped to direct Desert Storm this year. “We met and exceeded all of our expectations,” Russell said. “Everything went off as wonderfully as expected, despite the rain…Havasu goes to any length to deliver the water.”

Russell says that attendance to the events had increased 25 percent since last year, with the most participants the event has had in 10 years.

According to Russell, Desert Storm saw cooperation from almost every department in Lake Havasu City to ensure that the events went off smoothly.

Both Russell and Nichols thanked Shugrue’s Family Restaurant, the event’s chief sponsor, for its help with producing Desert Storm.

“Without Shugrues, we could not have produced this event, or taken it to the caliber it’s been,” Nichols said.

The weekend of Desert Storm, which coincided with the Laughlin River Run, wasn’t without complications.

“Overall, the weekend was uneventful for both events,” said Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Patricia Carter.

According to The Mohave County Sheriff’s Department reports 845 dispatch calls, 22 arrests, 11 motor vehicle accidents and four instances of DUI and three narcotic arrests throughout the River Run.

Three people were hospitalized as the result of motor vehicle accidents.

‘Low Altitude’ takes top spot at Havasu's Desert Storm Shootout
By KEVIN BAIRD TODAY’S NEWS-HERALD

Nearly an hour after hitting a top speed of 182 mph in the boat “Low Altitude,” and claiming the 17th Annual Desert Storm Shootout title on Lake Havasu, throttleman Chris Kissinger threw up his arms like a champion and yelled for joy.

“I can still feel that adrenaline pumping through my blood,” he said.

The boat’s driver and owner, Win Farnsworth, was feeling much the same.

“I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight,” he said.

Farnsworth and Kissinger have been racing boats together three years (Yes, the boat is so large it requires a driver and a throttleman.), but Saturday’s shootout was their first time racing Low Altitude, which has proved to be quite powerful

“It was fantastic,” Farnsworth said. “It ran hard, jumped on top of the water and went like a rocket, It was so much damn fun. You can’t have that much fun with your clothes on.”

Turbine mechanic and Low Altitude team member Aaron Williams of Tucson said the twin turbines that make this boat so powerful are the same turbines used in a UH-1 Huey helicopters—the same type of helicopter used in Vietnam.

Low Altitude garnered plenty of attention when it took off from Site Six. When the boat started it sounded like a commercial airliner was starting up. The boat’s sleek look added to its popularity. Nearly everyone at Site Six had their cell phone cameras trained on the boat as it headed out onto the lake.

“It’s a fully-fledged race boat. There’s nothing Cadillac about it,” Kissinger said. “Racing it was a once in a lifetime experience, and it’s a source of pride to know you have that kind of impact on the crowds. I can’t really explain in words how it was.”

While some may speculate that all it takes to win the Desert Storm Shootout is a lot of money to buy the best boat,, Maggie Hennier who is a lifetime boater and participated in Saturday’s shootout, disagrees.

“Anyone can buy a boat, but you still have to be able to park your boat in the wind,” Hennier said. “It takes skill. And it definitely takes some bowling-sized balls to go that fast.”

In addition to owner and driver Win Farnsworth and throttleman Chris Kissinger, the Low Altitude team also included co-owner Melissa Farnsworth, mechanic Robbie Willis of Lake Havasu City, dock hand Nick Bailey, Freddy Joe Farnsworth, Austin Goodwin, Win Farnsworth Sr., and turbine mechanic Aaron Williams, and Bebee Williams.
