Miami man dies after jumping off boat near Keys reef
September 1, 2013|Sun Sentinel

KEY LARGO — A Miami man died Saturday after he jumped off his boat for a swim and was swept away by the current near Carysfort Reef in the Atlantic Ocean, said police.

Luis Fernandez, 43, was fishing with his girlfriend from a 17-foot vessel when he jumped into the water to cool off about 5:45 p.m., the girlfriend told Monroe County Sheriff's deputies.

As the current began sweeping him away from the boat, he grabbed for a fishing line still in the water, but it broke, said Deputy Becky Herrin. The girlfriend tried to throw him a life preserver, but he was so far away he couldn't reach it, said Herrin.

His girlfriend, a 46-year-old Miami resident, told deputies she had never been on a boat before and did not know how to operate it.

The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded and located Fernandez' body.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Jesus. How much trial and error is there on a 17 foot boat? I would think that she would be motivated to learn quickly.
Maybe she wasn't motivated.

This is almost as bad as the three guys who died because they didn't simply cut the anchor line and run like hell.
A freaking 50 dollar anchor. $12.50 a life. Instead the retied the dam thing to the stern and gunned the engine.

Sometime there has to be a required basic boating class and license. He should have been well aware of currents and what they can do.
