A man burglarizing a vehicle got a big surprise when the vehicle sprayed him with a liquid that police later used to link him to the crime, authorities announced Saturday.

Riviera Beach Police say Allen Hatten, 39, who has no fixed address, on Friday tried to steal a few items from what he likely thought was a typical vehicle sitting in a convenience store parking lot.

Instead, it was a car placed there by Riviera Beach Police Special Operations Division, and it was equipped with a system that sprays the SmartWater CSI Technology liquid, police said. The spray, which can stay on someone's body for weeks, is invisible to the naked eye — only glowing brightly when placed under ultraviolet light.

On Friday, after Hatten allegedly stole a few items from the vehicle, the spray system inside the vehicle doused him with the SmartWater, police said. Police say they caught Hatten seconds later and used an ultraviolet light to confirm that he was the same person from the burglary. The items from the car were found nearby.

Hatten was jailed on burglary and grand theft charges, records show.

Riviera Beach Police spokeswoman Rose Anne Brown said Hatten had SmartWater spray on his neck, arms, and clothing. She said Hatten was swabbed for the spray, and the swabs will be sent to a SmartWater lab for analysis.

Police said Friday's case was the department's first successful arrest in which the water technology assisted. The department said it began using the technology
