Keys are No. 1 in boating, PWC crashes

Monroe County led all 67 Florida counties in 2012 in the number of both boating accidents and accidents involving personal watercraft, according to a report released Thursday.
Data compiled by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shows that Monroe had 100 boating accidents last year resulting in five deaths and 61 injuries. Combined property damage was $1.09 million.
Coming in at second is Miami-Dade, which had 81 crashes causing three deaths and 35 injuries. Combined monetary damage was $2.3 million.
Monroe had 23,863 registered recreational boats and 26,461 registered overall. That includes commercial fishing boats, dive charters and the like.
For personal watercraft such as Jet Skis, Monroe saw 22 accidents causing 20 injuries (no deaths) in 2012. Combined damage was $212,250.
Miami-Dade was second with 17 PWC accidents. In that county, they caused two deaths and 14 injuries, and combined damage of $51,300.
Monroe had 1,535 personal PWCs and 357 rental PWCs registered with the state last year.
Overall statewide, there were 704 "reportable" boating accidents, 55 boating-related fatalities and 386 injuries. There were 901,969 boats registered statewide.
"Many of these deaths were due to victims falling overboard and drowning," the FWC report says. "A large number of these deaths could have been prevented if the victims had worn life jackets."
In fact, the report notes, 42 percent (22) of the 2012 boating deaths were "falls overboard." The leading cause of death was drowning (62 percent).
