KANAB, Utah — A Utah man driving a motorboat on Lake Powell was apparently distracted by his young passengers when he hit a houseboat and flipped the craft, leaving his wife dead and his daughter and his son's girlfriend missing, deputies said.

Adrian Jackman, 59, of South Jordan, apparently tried to swerve when he noticed the moving houseboat but hit the front corner, authorities said.

The accident about 8 a.m. Thursday killed his wife, Marilyn Jackman, 57. His daughter, Jessica Jackman, 22, and his son's girlfriend, Valerie Rae Bradshaw, 29, of Sandy, Utah, are missing in the water.

Crews brought a robot equipped with a camera to search for the missing women Friday in the 400-foot-deep water near Dangling Rope Marina. But they ran into technical problems and had to call off the effort, according to Denise Shultz, spokeswoman for the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area that encompasses Lake Powell.

She said the Utah Highway Patrol has been asked to bring in equipment from the Salt Lake City area, and the search is expected to resume Saturday.

Most of the people aboard the motorboat, which was carrying 13 passengers, were family members from northern Utah, deputies said. Nobody on the houseboat was injured.

It's not uncommon for boaters to venture out early in the morning while the waters of Lake Powell are smooth, said Kane County sheriff's Sgt. Alan Alldredge. The vast man-made lake, bordered by sandstone walls and colorful rock formations, is a popular destination for houseboat vacations.

Deputies said the group was headed to Rainbow Bridge – touted as the largest known natural bridge in the world – when the crash happened. Crews had to rescue some victims from the water, Shultz said.

All of the six children aboard were wearing life jackets, officials said. Adrian Jackman and his 11-year-old granddaughter were airlifted to a hospital in Flagstaff, Ariz., while a third person was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The three were released later Thursday.

Search for women missing in Lake Powell enters fourth day

LAKE POWELL, Utah -The search for the bodies of two women who went missing after a boating accident that killed another woman on Lake Powell is in its fourth day.

Marilyn Jackman, 57, was killed when her family’s motorboat collided with a house boat on the lake Thursday. Crews are looking for Jackman’s daughter, 22-year-old Jessica Jackman, and the girlfriend of Jackman’s son, 29-year-old Valerie Bradshaw.

The Utah Department of Public Safety dive team is using sonar technology to search the water. Crews from the National Park had to suspend search efforts after their robot malfunctioned Friday. They are waiting for parts that will allow them to resume the search, and those parts are expected to arrive Monday.

Kane County Sheriff’s Sgt. Alan Alldredge said in a news release on Thursday that at around 8:15 a.m. Thursday, National Park Service dispatchers received reports of a boating accident at buoy 43 near Dangling Rope Marina. The accident involved a motor boat and a houseboat.

Alldredge said one woman riding on the motor boat was killed in the accident. She has been identified as 57-year-old Marilyn Jackman from South Jordan.

Other people on the boat were injured, and at least one was flown out via medical helicopter.

Alldredge said it appears that the driver of the boat may have been temporarily distracted by the movement of some children on the boat, and did not see the houseboat in time.

The driver tried to turn to miss the houseboat, but collided with the front corner, causing the motor boat to overturn and all thirteen people on the boat to be thrown out.

The National Park Service, Utah State Parks and Kane County Sheriff’s Office are working together on the rescue attempt and on the investigation of the accident.

An equipment malfunction reportedly forced rescue crews to halt their search efforts of the 400-foot deep water on Friday, but they will likely resume searching on Saturday. The area is very remote and crews will need sonar equipment shipped in from Salt Lake City.

Body of third Lake Powell accident victim found in 400 feet of water
ASSOCIATED PRESS
KANAB, Utah — Authorities have recovered the body of a third woman who died after a boat flipped over last week on Lake Powell.

Kane County deputies said the body of 22-year-old South Jordan resident Jessica Jackman was found in about 400 feet of water around noon Tuesday.

She was one of 13 people aboard a motorboat driven by her father when it crashed into a houseboat on Thursday morning near Dangling Rope Marina. Investigators said it appears the driver was distracted by some children who were on the watercraft.

Jackman’s mother, 57-year-old, Marilyn Jackman, was killed.

Jessica Jackman and 29-year-old Valerie Rae Bradshaw initially went missing in the water.

Crews who had been searching for the two missing women using sonar and a robot found Bradshaw’s body Sunday evening.
