Boat goes up in flames, catches nearby boat on fire, then sinks

An electrical problem may have caused a fire early Sunday at a Marathon marina that destroyed two boats.
The 4:51 a.m. fire started aboard a 1977, 32-foot Trojan motorboat docked near Pancho's Fuel Dock Supplies, 1280 Oceanview Ave., but spread to a nearby 1985, 34-foot Chien Hwa boat, according to fire and state wildlife officials.
The Trojan then drifted across the canal toward an adjacent restaurant, Burdines Waterfront, where it sank.
There was no damage to the nearby fuel dock at Pancho's Fuel Dock Supplies nor to Burdines Waterfront, said Marathon Fire Rescue Chief John Johnson.
"Both boats were fully involved when we arrived and we had a small issue with the two boats on fire, which created two operations for us," Johnson said. "Once the fires were out we turned the scene over to the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) and the Coast Guard."
Johnson added there was no damage to either dock and no one was hurt. The FWC is the investigating agency due the fire occurring on the water.
The fire appeared as of Monday to have started due to an electrical issue on the Trojan, but there is no indication of foul play, said FWC Capt. David Dipre.
No estimates were ready as of Monday, Dipre added.
The occupant of the Trojan reportedly tried to put out the fire with two fire extinguishers and a water hose before calling for help, Dipre said.
Monroe County Fire Rescue responded by covering Marathon in case another call came in as many Marathon trucks were at the marina fire, but county firefighters did not respond to the scene, said county Chief Jim Callahan.
