A not so bright individual took his 6 figure 43 ZR straight into a 40+ ft wave off the coast of California and gets major air. Very stupid thing to do.

Some of the comments..

I actually know the owner and one of the passengers. My buddy dislocated his hip and shoulder when the third passenger landed right on top of him.

..........................

This video was shot by Pete Koff in San Francisco Jan 19th 2013
The boat was a 35ft Donzi boat, the hull did get damaged and there were some pretty serious injuries on board. The owner just put $500 of work into the boat. The boat stalled out for about 2 min after the jump, then jammed back into SF Bay.

My impression was it was more an ignorant move then intentional and stupid. I did not appear he intended to catch air.

I wonder how much experience he had? There is no way most of us would even consider a straight on, at speed, into a wave of that size......

Ignorant, or stupid, still not a good thing. In some ways he was pretty lucky it wasn't worse......

If that's a 35 Donzi, the wave has to be close to 35' high. That means the nose of the boat fell about 60 feet ????????

You can see he had slowed.

I too, doubt that he was going out for air; just probably thought - wow - big water, I've got a big water boat. OH SH!!!T, do I roll it for sure or just try to punch through over the top? Lucky indeed.

From everything I've seen, it was a 43.
Obviously a bad decision all around. Especially with passengers.

I'd say that is a total loss, cost more to fix than it is worth.

I'd say that is a total loss, cost more to fix than it is worth.
And it would never be right.
Supposedly, the other side looks fine, but the stresses put on that hull...
I'd never trust it, or anything else on the boat.

If buoy won't drive it... It's toast.
He once came back to the dock with 2/3 less transom than he left with. :D

That's only a slight exaggeration.
And it happened twice in the same boat.

A 43 Donzi would be a dream to me, and it looks like this one was nice.
"Was" being the operative word...

Artie could fix it, yes?

Never would have broke.
He would have built it much stronger a decade ago.

If your spline grease is really sticky, and you keep moving, a transom is just a formality. :)

It could be fixed, yes.
But it scares me that the rest of the hull took that much stress too.

I smell chopped up fiberglass, and a Craigslist ad for drives, engines, and gauges...

Trust me, this is true.
I know from experience.
Halfway between Sandusky and nowhere.
In 5-7 footers
Fortunately there is an island out there.

I'm thinking you should buy the boat for pennies on the dollar. It can't be any worse than driving a boat with a missing transom, can it??????

From the cracks, do you think the stringers are snapped?

I couldn't afford to run and maintain a 43'er.
Too much boat for my budget, and nowhere to keep it.
Plus, it's too big for the lakes around me. 28-30 is about the max to actually use.
I would guess the only way to fix this boat would be a complete de-rig, replace all structural members.
You'd have a ton of work and money in it to make it something I'd feel comfortable with.
The guy was lucky to get it back to dock.

Yeah, you're probably right. It sure was an awfully good looking boat to end up as scrap.......:(
