View Full Version : Either sell my Bertram Competition 38' or make into a 5 seater with bigger power

Took my Bertram out this past weekend on the st johns river with some peeps. Well being that my B38 is the organel race setup for 3 people makes it kinda hard to do anything. poker runs are just fine, but then there is always the 4th person. So last weekend kinda pissed me off to either SELL or move the dash forward 4 feet and create a 5 seat bad boy. buckets and center console like the red/white bertram would be awesome.
Kinda lost currently.
Your thoughts are welcome you all.

maybe a trade???,
Bertram 38

Well, gonna sound crazy, but I'd do a two seat "trundle/bow-rider", in front of the current setup, with removable hard covers.

Do you have a direct top shot? If so, I could lay it out like I mean. But just think of the trundle seat in an old Ford, combined with the bowrider set-up being used a lot on performance Vee's on the West Coast. With the "Trundle" closed, looks just like now, with it open, two more seats.

Then put a snapon cushion on each side of the hatch scoops, so the girl in the red bikini, and at least one of her friends, have room to stretch out....

It would look kinda like this with the two hatch-trundles flipped open...

Killer Bert, sounds like you grown /growing out of it. Rat's idea is an interesting idea, personally i don't think i would /could hack into (THAT)boat, I'd buy / build something else and keep the Bert for yourself. If thats not an option, love it enough to let it go. Just my opinion.

gonna be a tough choice.

Ratickle, cool thought. I would rather be in front then behind the idiot passengers. I would would be wearing all the bear and cig butts. LOL

Remember the red white Bertram. dash was moved forward with a wind screen. Love the seating and center console. sweet.:hurray:

Is that a staggered?

I also vote for trading/selling rather than cutting. But agree that Paul's imagination is creative.

Hey Steve ! - um.... a thought - but NO THANKS - It is always the problem with a single purpose boat - Race Boat - problem with taking others out for a ride- or selling it too- In today's market - am sure it would be difficult to sell - We all go through stages in our lives, that was one of them - after building a factory in the Bahamas and seeing the Bahamas 500 back in 1970 - it got me interested -- then came the Video gig - that too was fun - great perch - fun to do as well - even that has passed too - Now its Memories, of events, and people ! What ever you decide to do Kurt - just do it - enjoy the unique hull -you have one of what - 12 built - something like that - think its the last of the plain fiberglass hulls too -

Hi again to Steve - Maida too - "let me ask her a question " - be well all of you - PHIL

Hi Phil

Good to hear you are doing well. thanks for the words, I plan on changing the deck to match the red Bertram. Completely usable in all fashions.
She will never be in competition again. But sure will be fun in poker runs with FOUR People. not 3. I can use her more than just a retired race boat.
Plus updateing will help in overall performance and comfort. OOOPs forgot SAFETY first.

I know there are not many pictures, but wasn't Sopwith's 400 (Double-O-Seven) boat that burned in the race when Vincenzo saved them a 38 competition with front and back seats? In that story we did on Vincenzo's passing there was a pic, but that may be one of very few.

The only 38 Bertram that I know of - that had 4 place config. was the German guys - Think it was Oskar Trost - boat name was WD-40-

How much farther forward are the two front seats than yours currently? I can't tell very well.

At least you'd have a true 38 Competition to copy the original.

First one I seen with a four seater. Cool, she looks about 3 feet longer in overall cockpit opening. I belive bertram had many layouts, expecially the dash setups and hatches.
I need more photos of the wd-40 Bertram. anybody out there have more pictures of deck and cockpit.
Thanks

Kurt's boat is about as well restored to the original classic that Phil owned as it can possibly be already.

Well, did you make a decision?

One thing I guess I worry about, the boats need to be used. If Kurt can modify the boat into a 4, 5, or 6 passenger, and duplicate the WD-40 Competition from the factory, I say go for it. Cool boats sitting around, and not being used, don't mean a whole lot to me.

I don't know if Platinum Powerboats are still alive. If they are, try to contact Mr. Andreas Trost there. He is Dr. Oskar Trost's son and should have more pics of Miss WD40. He told me years ago that he still owns a 38 Competition but I'm not sure if it is Miss WD40.

I had five in my boat all the time. I loved the larger cockpit. Kurt I think you have done wonders with that boat. If moving the helm + all the glass work + paint work isn't to much I think it will make the boat much more fun for you. As you know I have a three stand now and it is an odd number so I feel the pain. Your far more hands on with that stuff than I am hence if you can do the work I think you will find a new love for the boat. My 2c. btw I'll send you that jpeg file of my old boat you asked for. Peace brother.

Paul did track me down...

My Dad had the 38 Bertram "WD-40" built. It was his second Bertram raceboat. She was sold in the mid 70's. I have not seen her since, but heard some disturbing rumors about her...

Several years ago I was looking for "WD-40", but did not find her. I found and bought another one instead, the "Vincentive" originally owned by Vince Fasano and throttled by Sammy James. That boat had a 2-man cockpit.

I personally think that a 3-man side-by-side cockpit is tight on a 38 Bertram, due to the shape of the deck. I like the setup of the WD-40 best, but I would not change your boat. It is a rare classic, one of the all time great offshore boats. Keep her original and preserve the value. One day you will be happy that you did. These days a butchered up Can-Am car does not have anywhere close to the value of an original one. Neither a Can-Am car, nor a 38 Bertram has much utility value. Respect her for what she truly is and she should give you lots of joy.

If you truly want 4 or more seats, it might be better to find a less rare and more "accommodating" boat to begin with.

All the best,

Andreas
