Wow, anyone we know on the boat? I've been tossed around pretty good before myself, but never on tape.

Thanks for the email!

Only a guess, but the speed doesn't look to be that excessive. No life jackets, no kill lanyard? Actually pretty lucky everyone stayed in the boat. The comment about seat belts, in an open boat, is kind of comical...

Brutal Boat Crash at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri (Video) (http://dailypicksandflicks.com/2012/09/01/brutal-boat-crash-at-lake-of-the-ozarks-in-missouri-video/)

A boating accident at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri was captured on a shocking video last Friday. The crash happened when the Fountain powerboat plowed into a large wake of another vessel at high speed. The boat slammed from side to side causing injuries to the driver and six passengers. Five were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor to moderate injuries

As I understand it, that was at loto after the poker run.
Lack of jackets and lanyards...sheesh.
I've been tossed around pretty good when a buddy bought a 32 sunsation brand new and tries turning it like the 22 ski boat he had just moved up from.
People in that Fountain were pretty lucky.

It looks excessive to me. Super awesome throttle work. Who needs half throttle? Have the guts to be an all or nothing man.

Chit man. I was coming up the Maumee channel last week when the Navy was in town with a couple buddies and we were all alone in the channel doing like maybe 55 and I could see this wake coming. Must have been 8 or 9 feet. Was an enormous yacht at a good clip, but not planing. It had three or four other wakes of similar size in it's trail. (Oh phuck.) I came off plane for it and just bobbed over it at 5 mph. There was no way to hit that steep front wave and not stuff the next coming back down.

I wonder if the throttles would have been on the correct side, this could have been avoided...:sifone:

He clearly did not have a clue how to use the throttles. Perfect example of why driving lessons for high speed boats is a good idea.

the article on MSN:

Have you ever had a pleasant day on the lake ruined by some jerk racing around at unsafe speeds? Well, here's a bit of vicarious revenge. An apparently inexperienced driver behind the wheel of a notoriously powerful Fountain boat, on crowded Lake of the Ozarks no less, bashed himself and his passengers around after blasting through another boat's wake. A crew from Lake TV happened to be onboard at the time, which may partly account for the reckless speed the driver was maintaining and his he-man violent back-and-forth wrenching of the throttle despite looming danger. Five people were treated for injuries from the accident. Maybe this will make the driver slow down and enjoy nature instead of screaming through it.

I call those serious injuries. I think that they were under-reported. It was a violent crash.
Hopefully they all recover fully and as comfortably as possible. The people who refused transport obviously needed treatment.

Maybe they got a call from an attorney. Honestly, how could someone with three broken ribs, a punctured lung and a broken ankle refuse all treatment at the scene...Just wonderin'

Not sure on that one, but those who live on the Lake of The Ozarks know how rough it can get because of the steep walls with almost no wave deadening, and the number of boat wakes on busy weekends.

Take a peek at the action from wakes when the boats were leaving the Shootout...

A review of the boat after the accident shows drives trimmed way up, and tabs up. Watching the video does show him trimming the drives and tabs before the accident, but there is no way to know how much time was edited out of the video.

And I'm not so sure Bobcat didn't hit the nail on the head when it comes to throttle location in comparison to the driver. The driver is an experienced racer from the old F-2 days. I however do not know if he drove or throttled and am finding out. Either way, he should have known how to read the water. The boat spinning out may have been the result of the throttles being pulled all the way back while it appears the boat was in the air. In a stepped hull, landing on a quartering boat wake, usually all over if that was the actual sequence.

The driver happens to be a friend of two different friends. The injuries are real. The lady that part is referencing was taken to the hospital almost immediately by her husband instead of getting treatment there.

It was the storm stoppage of the shootout. Everybody was leaving at the same time and the place was packed with boats. We have the same thing here fater fireworks at Coast Guard in Grand Haven. We stopped taking a boat to it because of the issues. For the most part I thought he did pretty good. There were a couple others at the fringes of his Go Pro that I'm not to sure about though.

I get what you are saying Paul, and I wasn't there so I won't guess.
It just seemed that he was hitting it pretty hard and almost like his goal was to get out in front. Maybe it was just the video that made it seem like he was closing on everybody, whether port or SB, and crossing wakes just to pass people. Whatever. To each his own. Just wondered if it seemed that way to anybody else, I guess.

Whenever another boat that seemed of similar caliber was around, he definitely pushed harder. I was just saying there were so many boats, I'm not sure there was much choice as to running close to others.

The goal is almost always to get out front....:sifone:

In a safe manner of course. I think I would have required vests in that water of my passengers though.

hate to state the obvious, but the still photo, boat aground is not the 38' fountain in the video ,otherwise been there done that, not proud of it.

play the fast boat game long enough and fast enough, and that dog will bite you one bad call is all it takes, i don't care who you are. driver error, umbilicals should have been in place case closed.

The other vids I've put up is just to show the water conditions of the lake immediately after the shootout was called due to the storms moving in. When a 50' Meteor stuffs, that's some fairly big water.

One Charged After Ozark Boat Crash Viral Video | FOX2now.com (http://fox2now.com/2012/09/05/police-hope-people-learn-lesson-from-ozark-boat-crash-viral-video/?hpt=ju_bn5)

LAKE OF THE OZARKS (KTVI) – A video of a boating accident on the Lake of the Ozarks is going viral, and Missouri state troopers say that’s probably a good thing. They hope people will get the message about going too fast in crowded waters when they see the graphic images.

The incident happened on August 24th, though the video, shot by a Lake TV photographer, wasn’t uploaded to YouTube until September 1st. Since then the images, of the seven passengers being violently thrown into each other and to the deck, have been seen by well over 100,000 people online and countless more watching on television.

Locals like Lisa Reed, a bartender at Beaver’s on the Lake, were shocked, but not entirely surprised by what happened.

“It’s packed. You’ve got the jet skis dodging the big boats. You’ve got the big boats dodging the jet skis. The skidoos wanting to jump off the bigger boats wakes. And you see ‘em flipping over. Falling off.”

But the Missouri Highway Patrol isn’t entirely disappointed the video of the accident is getting so much attention.

“It’s a good example,” Sgt. Jerry Callahan said. “Unfortunately it’s the stories of the injury accidents when they get out there that people really start to pay attention. And we are lucky in this instance I think.”

The driver of the boat, Marvin Carter, III of Memphis, TN suffered moderate injuries and a blow to his wallet as well. He’s being cited for speeding and imprudent operation of the boat. Five of the seven people on board were hospitalized, four of them with moderate injuries including broken bones.

“In Missouri we don’t have a daytime speed limit but that doesn’t mean you can drive your boat as fast as you want,” Callahan said. “You have to look at the existing conditions and look at the boat traffic on the water. Are there more boats? In this instance, the waves. The wakes.”

He hopes that lesson will be driven home as more and more people watch the video.

“I hope people are looking and saying, ‘wow, that could have been really bad.’”

As it grows larger, the comments keep coming....

While some commenters on the video urged the importance of life jackets and restraints, such as seat belts, when riding in such a high-speed vehicle, others were taking more of the "tough love" approach, saying that the passengers of the boat participated in "reckless stupidity."

"Driver's not wearing seat belt and operating at high speed. Negligence for the driver. I hope the police see this and charge him. Makes people think twice," commented one viewer on YouTube.

"They all look like crash test dummies tumbling inside a washing machine," commented another viewer.

From the co-owner of LakeTV....

Kober said one of his cameramen, Brett Tintera, had been filming activities leading up to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout -- which bills itself as "the largest unsanctioned boat race in the United States."

Tintera had attached a small camera to the front of the boat with suction cups, and Tintera said he had hitched a ride on the boat, which was headed to a restaurant.

When the boat started bouncing between waves, which Tintera said is normal when so many boats are on the water, at such a high speed, he said he felt "complete fear."

"At one point when it was leaning real bad, I thought the boat was going to flip for sure," Tintera said. "I don't know how it didn't. When we came to, there was so much water in the boat that it didn't make any sense."

In addition to breaking a leg and a wrist, Tintera says he ruptured a disc in his back and bruised some ribs. Among other injuries sustained by the passengers Tintera counts a broken back, a couple shattered eye sockets, and hips, feet, legs and arms all snapped as the boat shook violently back and forth before coming to a halt.

Tintera's footage has been seen over 3 million times at this point. He says Anderson Cooper invited him to appear on CNN, but he's too busted up to make the trip. The story also made Good Morning America, CBS News, the New York Post and a GIF made of the moment of impact appeared on Tosh.0's blog.

Do you guys who live and boat on LOTO ever think they will be able to make it a no-wake lake for certain size boats? It looks like there is starting to be some serious effort to do that.

http://youtu.be/PPp-SnoJ7fw

I know they accomplished that in certain lakes up here. Like Spring Lake is all boats 26' and over must only operate at no wake. Whitehall lake is all boats 40 feet and over must operate at no wake, etc.
