We're looking to upgrade to something a little larger from a 17' center console. Maybe 20-23 foot, want to keep the center console layout. What kind of cat choices are there? Anyone have any experiences good or bad? Something on the order of the one in the middle here. (http://www.splendorboats.com/used) Doesn't look like there's a lot of freeboard though. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I've always wanted a cat. Speed, and efficiency are sometimes better than a comparable vee. May not be practical in this size range for Lake Erie though

I'm sure there are some out there with deep cockpits. The 23 Whaler isn't a cat, but I'd drive one across the ocean......

We'll start looking.

I/O or Outboard preferred?

Motion made a nice 25' CC , Talon also made a 25' CC. Then you get a little bigger with

Cobra Predator at 31. Quite a few on Boattrader online , and they are very reasonably priced.
Jaguar, hard to find and faaaaaasssssst!
Then there are less sporty but nicely laid out.
Worldcat
Pro-Kat (my fav) they make a really nice 23' that seems much bigger
Prowler
Glacier Bay , Nice but have weird cockpit layouts

Thinking outboard at the moment. World Cat 21 maybe? Some may be at the right price point

Looks to have the design of a rough water cat with the Freeboard etc. Plus the all important porta potty.......:sifone:

This is going to be a second boat, so we're trying to keep the costs under $10K. Not sure if this is possible for a cat or not, so I'm just looking for some thoughts or ideas. I've never even ridden in a cat, so I guess I'm not even sure what to look for.

+1 You might try asking on Scream and Flys website, they are a little more in tune with a smaller center console outboard cat. ( Not that theres anything wrong with this site. )

The Hull Truth probably has better examples of what you are looking for (In a Penguin free boating experience)

Scream and Fly seems to be geared more towards the STV style river rockets (which are cool as hell!!!!!) than the fishing style center consoles, not that I'm going to do a lot fishing, but I need something that handles an occasionally angry Lake Erie.

I will look at the hull truth.

(Penguins are not free boaters, freeloaders maybe, but not freeboaters.)

I looked a little harder into the Seacat 21. Seems that with max rated horsepower they top out about 35 and cruise around mid 20s at 2-3mpg. With those numbers, I'm not that excited anymore. The Talons and Cobras (if I remember that correctly) are really cool looking and offer some performance vs a similar V hull, too bad they're not within $$ for us. May have to stick with a V hull CC, which really isn't a bad thing, just thought the cat idea could be interesting
