View Full Version : Does anyone have the new 800 SX-R Jet Ski? (or, is anyone else into stand up skis?)

I just ordered one, so to help curb my excitement, I figured I'd see if anyone else is into stand ups?

This will be my 5th stand up ski (I had an X-2 as well), and I can't WAIT to shred some wakes on this beast! The 1995 550sx has been my overall favorite ski of all time, but I'm thinking it's days on top are numbered with this new machine's power & shortened hull. I always hated the 650's & 750's, because their hulls were so long for speed & rough water improvement. The 800 is supposed to have a length that's more similar to the 550/440 hulls of the past. http://smiliesftw.com/x/cool.gif (http://smiliesftw.com)

Here are a few pics of it:

They are a blast. I've always thought they are much more fun to ride than Sea-Doo's & similar. You can have fun in smooth or choppy water, & pull some pretty sick air on them:

I had a blast on my X-2, and it was the best for carving turns of any of them.

Funny question: Did yours have a problem with taking on water? Man, I had 2-3 other guys that had X2's & used to ride with me, and ALL of ours would take on water but we could NEVER figure out where it was getting in! We'd have to beach them every couple of hours & drain them out. They were kick ass other than that "small" issue http://smiliesftw.com/x/eek3red.gif (http://smiliesftw.com)

Haha, I don't blame you a bit bud! You'll jump on that machine & be instantly hooked all over again. What's funny to me, is how relatively cheap all of the mod parts are for them. As a kid, I'd spend an entire paycheck on a Skat-Trak impeller, or a PJS pipe & manifold, and couldn't get it installed fast ENOUGH!

I had heard the same thing from someone else long after I'd sold my X2, that the front seals or bushings were the culprit causing the leaks. I wish we could have figured that out, or I might still have it. That was so damn annoying. We all came pretty close to sinking the damn things more than a few times back then http://smiliesftw.com/x/cooleek.gif (http://smiliesftw.com)

My last stand-up was my 94 Superjet 701. Had it set up with the Factory Pipe pipe and water box, Skat Trak variable pitch impeller, and I can't remember all what else. I used to race in the local KC club and we did some traveling to regional IJSBA events. It was a good time! I sold it to a friend of mine who still has it. He says it's he best ski he's ever owned and won't sell it back to me!

That one looks sweet B! Ho well are the new ones supposed to run? Back in the day, hitting 50 was a pretty good accomplishment on a limited ski.

I had a pretty built X2 it was a lot of fun but like everyone else who owned one. It leaked got sank a few times. Usually after flooding the motor, and running the battery down with the bilge pump. I have been wanting another stand up again, but It is had to beat a Seadoo HX for all out jumping.

I spent almost ten full years racing stand ups in the midwest region of the tour. I shutter to guess how many hours I have logged on a stand up ski. Probably some of my best memories on the water to be honest. Given the recent state of my financial limits I too have thought long and hard about getting another stand up ski.

Riding and racing stand ups is how I came across LOTO in the late 90s. Tim Seebold used to put on a race up there in September every year. It was always a fun trip for us. When I saw the wake jumping opportunities on the main channel of that lake I thought I had died and went to heaven.

I used to get amused at the couch skis when my sister and I would show up for a long ride up the lake. While unloading our skis they would quickly remind us that we were taking a 1+ hour trip up the lake and we probably wouldn't be able to keep up. We were quick to let them know we wouldn't take it too hard on them. ;)

Some of my favorite memories are riding white water areas of the Illinois river with racing buds. We have a small local power plant lake that stays 80+ degrees year round. Everyone would come in from Kansas and Missouri to ride with us for the weekend during the winter months. I can't count how many days I spent on that lake riding in sub 40 degree weather.

Brando, in short, you have my support. :) You may give me a reason to go get another one. All of my hours have been logged on a SuperJet hull though. We could always pretend it's Skater vs MTI and make big engine noises while going at it together.

I say if water is involved and it has an engine in it you can't go wrong. Something tells me the smile will be just as big at the end of the day.

(you seriously have me thinking)

EDIT....My second favorite ski to get on was a Waveblaster. That was another mistake to sell. I can appreciate your love affair with the X2. Not many people know that Chris MacCluggage won his first ever world title on an X2. I think he was fourteen at the time.

:iagree::iagree: I also raced stand-up in the late 80's and had a great time doing it . I also got my performance boat bug from attending a race in Seaside Hieghts NJ that hosted Jet skis and offshore powerboats in the same venue. I remember pulling into the event thinking how bad ass I was with a matching truck and 16' enclosed trailer until I rolled up on the offshore guys with semi's with matching 40' boats & heliocopter's ... Boy did my ego shrink:leaving:

Still have a standup in the garage , 750sxi . Love it . Had them all , stand ups that is . Raced them back in the day . Quit when it fell apart . Used to build engines , had a shop for a few years. It's amazing how much money we used to spend building a 550 motor. Then again getting a 40 hp motor up to 90 hp wasn't cheap. First mod I made was to put an aluminum handle pole on it , busted too many in the ocean jumping !!!

I love standups! I used to race a Kawi 750 and the Yamaha SuperJet standups. They are a blast! I laughed when I saw this thread because I was thinking of buying another one for the summer. I have not ridden the new Kawi 800 so I am not sure how different they are from the 750 hull. Once you get it slap a Factory pipe on it. They are the best aftermarket pipe and they really wake them up!

See Brandon...I knew I liked you for SOME reason! ;) I just sold my 1990 550SX and my 1992 750SX...both were piped, had Westcoast heads, impellers, ride plates, intakes...all kinda goodies. When my wife and I were married, our wedding present to eachother was a new 750 sit-down, but we both rode the standups. If I get back into it, I'll DEFINATELY get the new 800...looks awesome. BTW...totally agree on the 550 being the best hull...I loved that thing!

I had an old one with a 440 in it (i think) used to keep it on a peice of carpet in my bed of my truck and then strap it to the swim platform. what a riot! It was old! anyways i got it for free and put two pistons in it (top end) rebuilt the carbs and she was rockin. only think it did about 30 mph but it was a blast. then someone on the beach offered me $800.00 for it so i let it go. then i got a deal on 2 kawais that were 1100 2 strokes. they flew. I bet they did every bit of 60. anyways. just got rid of them too. i would really like to have a stand-up again.

Got my second 550sx home Saturday. Only ski I would own. Started with 79 440 way back when. Couple early 550s after that. Never liked the 650s at all. Too heavy, short foot well, etc for my tastes. I had a 750 sxi 2 summers ago. I enjoyed it. I thought the boat was well balanced for size and power. I hit 55 with it a few times. Went back to light small 550sx last year. Got a second with reed motor this past weekend. After searching for an sx reed boat for a few years, two more popped up on local CraigsList in past 2 days since I got mine. My favorite and recomendation REED CASE 550SX !!

I rode the 800 last year and it's bad a$$! I was 289 pounds last summer, I'm down 30 and looking forward to trying it out again. It had been years since I rode a stand-up, used to ride 650's which were a little tricky in the waves. The 800 is very stable and very fast compared to the old days. It's my neighbor's ski, I didn't really want to try it because I thought I'd sink it at my weight. I was very impressed. This thread brings back memories. I used to work at Butch's, Oscar built some of the best engines. There are a lot of old 550's out there with Team Butch gear under the hood.

There you go , looks like you too had MMF racing on speed dial for the alum handle poles. I was digging through some box at the shop and found a few stainless impellars , some skat trak , some solas and some other goodies. The old names from jet ski performance. some already mentioned , team butch , pjs , mariner , everyone had a kerker (or at least the kerker kiks azz sticker) on their old 440-550.

Good guesses,, does not really have a rubrail but the nose piece, which was replaced,
back then they did not have lanyards, if you fell off the ski it came to an idle and circled around back to you. But mine did not do that either. It was originally set up for pro modified racing, and in that class you had no idle, if you fell of they wanted the ski to stop and not circle infront of someone else..
Since you had to hold the throttle on or it died there was no stop switch. Just a start button
throttle was replaced
steering bar? Do you mean on the handle pole or pump? Doesn't matter they were repaced, handle pole was extended to get you farther back on ski
throttle was replaced would not fit the handle bars

After searching for an sx reed boat for a few years, two more popped up on local CraigsList in past 2 days since I got mine.

If you have a second, would you mind PMing me the link to those two you said popped up after you got home with your new one? I'm STILL looking for a 1995 550sx, but I would look at a 94 as well. Thanks, and congrats on your new one! http://smiliesftw.com/x/cool.gif (http://smiliesftw.com)

Sorry for just getting back to the thread guys! I went down to Florida for a few days to run the 368 one last time down there, before it comes back to OK for the Summer! GREAT times!

I'm both surprised & excited to see so many of you that are, or were, into stand ups......and only ONE lake lice comment! http://smiliesftw.com/x/roflwerd.gif (http://smiliesftw.com)

I rarely see stand ups on the water at all anymore, but the ones I do see, are never of the lake lice type of rider. Stand ups obviously require a lot more skill than sit down versions, so the people I do see out, have been riding for long enough to stay clear of any boats, as well as can been seen looking behind them, & to the sides, watching for traffic.

The problem with sit down models, is that the person who owns it, is usually not the one riding it. It's the guests of the owner, that come to the lake once a year and want to ride the SeaDoo's. THEY are the ones with tunnel vision, no knowledge of what "No Wake" even means, much less how to obey the rule, and they run side to side instead of with, or against the flow of traffic. :boxing_smiley:

I have always preferred to just cruise the shoreline at half throttle or so, waiting for a nice wake to come along. One that doesn't already have 10, 3-seater Wave Runners or similar following it. Those people trying to seriously jump the 3 seat machines, never seem to have a system, or pattern they follow, to keep from running into each other. They also stay behind the boat, hitting the wrong wave.... the WRONG way, while staying close enough to the back of the boat to ruin any chance of someone else hitting it without running them over.....:toetap05:

I've been doing more research since getting the ball rolling with the 800, and the newest SuperJet has great reviews as well. It's also shorter & a bit narrower than the Kawi, as well as about 60ish pounds lighter. That has to make it carve & jump even better, so I'd like to somehow try both models out. The dealers hardly stock stand ups in any kind quantity these days, so finding one that has a couple of used ones to test ride, is going to be nearly impossible. I've ridden a SuperJet before, and it was a great ski. I may go with the SJ when it comes time to decide, even though I've always owned Kawi's. The dealer will be cool with trading the Kawi I asked for, for the SJ instead.

Here's a pic of the 2010 SJ:

There you go , looks like you too had MMF racing on speed dial for the alum handle poles. I was digging through some box at the shop and found a few stainless impellars , some skat trak , some solas and some other goodies. The old names from jet ski performance. some already mentioned , team butch , pjs , mariner , everyone had a kerker (or at least the kerker kiks azz sticker) on their old 440-550.

I don't have the skis anymore, but I've still got BOTH original (and cracked) handlepoles in my basement!

I ended up taking a 2009 leftover that they had, since other than the sticker kit, it's the same ski as the other one. They let it go for just over cost, so it was tough to ignore when they threw that at me.

Very cool. I have also had several kawi and yamaha standups. Best times of my life on the water. I just recently bought a 93 yamaha waveblaster with less than 20 original hrs. I had several blasters back in the mid 90's and missed the fun. I spent all last weekend on that thing and left the boat in the garage. Good times, and sore as hell the first half the week..

Got mysecond stand up cookin a while ago.
Had 90 550sx, now a 92 550sx too.
It has waterbox, scoop, prop, ride plate, sponsons, otherwise pretty stock
First reed 550 I have had. Like it better.
Son now rides my 90 when he can get away with it.
Still like the little ones best!

Great buy Brandon. I'll be up this weekend to keep it warm while you're out on the 368.

Love,

That's a GREAT ski man. The 92-95 models are the best of all of the 550 series, having the reed valve engine. If you ever get tired of it, let me know first, as I try to find those al the time that are in good condition. :cheers2:

I stay to the side of the lake, so that I'm not in ANYone's way out there, because I KNOW how much of a pain in the ass some of the clueless rider are out there. :cheers2:

It's been a total BLAST so far!

Road one the other day. What a blast! Took a while to get used to it. The power/handling is very different than the old school 550 in had. :cheers2:

Congrats
Looks like fun.
All your comments earlier regarding stand ups/sit downs are SPOT ON!
Same things I have said for ALOT of years.
I got my 10 soon to be 11 year old son following me around the lake now. He already has a far greater appreciation and sense of what rules to follow than many (most)adults that have lived on our lake their entire lives. Stand ups are a great tool to teach kids with. You have to develop the skill to ride before you can get faster speeds. A new 800 hp sit down, all you gotta do is sign saying you will start making payments soon. We have seen a TON of new riders, never been on the water at all before going 70 mph on their brand new super turbo blown 4 stroke EFI whatever bullet sitdown. SCAREY!

I have a very good customer that asked me to store his 2008 250X jet ski. He said the battery is dead. When we checked it the battery was not the issue. The engine was full of water. It sat like this or God only knows how long. The motor and supercharger are locked up tight. Jet ski parts dept won't quote me on a price for a rebuild kit or an engine. They say it needs to be brought in. I did some research and found out these particular skis have had problems with the manifold being too porous and the engines get water in them.
My customer’s exact words were “I need you to handle this!”
Anyone have any suggestions? Where can I get a motor? Anyone know of any? This is really not our area of expertise we repair trucks! It is my largest, best customers so i need to handle this even I have to buy a new ski.

I was thinking of putting the ski on Ebay as is, use what ever money towards another ski. The one thing that really confuses the issue is the ski itsel looks brand ne and it's beautiful!!

Help??

I am having a graphic guy copy my boats' paint job, & create a wrap/decal set for the ski.

Here's a pic of the boat, & the "rough draft" that he's done for the ski so far:

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9959/img0995ygc.jpg (http://img18.imageshack.us/i/img0995ygc.jpg/)

http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/8239/dsc0020mcp.jpg (http://img709.imageshack.us/i/dsc0020mcp.jpg/)

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/7722/jetskiwrap.jpg (http://img27.imageshack.us/i/jetskiwrap.jpg/)

I just need to take a few more pictures of the boat in high resolution, & directly from the side, so that the pic will have the least amount of glare possible. I think it's going to look really cool when he's finished. http://smiliesftw.com/x/cool.gif (http://smiliesftw.com)
