Somalia pirates threaten to blow up oil supertanker (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100421/wl_nm/us_somalia_piracy)

I still do not understand why a company will send a multi-million dollar ship thru pirate infested waters with an unarmed crew?

It is totally insane.

All ships at sea should have armed lookouts on deck at all times.

I agree. Seems like it would be much cheaper to pay some armed security than to lose one ship.

I really am baffled at why the crew of these vessels can not carry weapons.

I understand it is because the ports that receive them do not allow it, but why not create some kind of special safe? The harbor pilot can verify guns are locked, and leave a lock of his own when the ship is in port.

Some mounted 20mm cannons should do the trick:D

AK-47's are good enough to send pirates running. You don't need to blow up their boats. Just scare them away. :smash:

Where's the fun in that?
That would be like a boat full of Claymates with their tops on.:D
