View Full Version : Am I Going to Make it Through This Delivery?

I have had some pretty grueling BOAT deliveries in the past. But next month, I've got a BABY delivery. I am not much for looking at blood and guts and the such. However, my wife wants me in the delivery room. I'll be there. I asked my brother what it was like and he said "nobody needs to see that."

From the guys who've done this, two questions:

1:How bad is it, really?

2:How mad is the doctor going to be when I barf on him?:ack2:

it's not pretty, but it's not that bad..

Drs. nrses etc...we are used to seeing people turn green and puke, you wouldn't be the first, and definitly won't be the last.

She will be draped, so if you stand next to her and hold her hand, you wont have see anything untill they place the baby on her chest.

Never done it myself, but I'd say that probably sums it up pretty well. I'd say stay north of the waistline, you don't need to see your wifes fun stuff getting destroyed when kid comes out man. Just sayin...

It depends on you. The excitement and anticipation pretty much makes the yucky parts disappear. The only problem I had was when they gave her the epidural. They pulled out a needle that looked like a sharpened piece of 1/4" pipe about 6" long and shoved it into her spine (The event obviously exaggerated the perception) It kinda freaked me out.

Our first was at a big hospital on a busy night. They put her in a room and we pretty much didn't see anyone for hours at a time. I had to do just about everything. The second one we went to a private delivery center at a different hospital. They had a "birthing suite". It was like a high-end resort hotel. Much better experience.

Like everyone says, the birth is the easiest part. Making sure they navigate the best path through life is an all-encompassing, never-ending job.

One other thing- if you're going to a teaching hospital, get used to everyone in the place coming in to take a look up your wife's skirt. A janitor came in to grab the trash can once and I expected him to give it a check.

You won't barf, just cry like baby. It only happens once; so make sure you don't miss anything. Cutting the cord feels like cutting a garden hose with dull scissors. I've rode in a open canopy bi-plane, 120+ mph cat, 155+ motorcycle.....and none of it compares to seeing your first born delivered!

Congrats & enjoy it!

things that wll freak you out....
At one point she will sit up, her head will spin like Linda Blair on the exorcist and she will say in a deepr grawvely voice "GET IT OUUUTTTTT!!!!!", This will then prompt you to ask her if it hurts.. She will intern give you a look rarely seen by anyone except Jeffrey Dahmer's victims as she reaches up, grabs your bottom lip and pulls it over your head. Other than that, no worries...

Congrads and good luck Peter. I have a real weak stomach for blood but made it through twice. The nurses did laugh and escort me out after I made it through the delivery. Some orange juice and a cold towel will help you right out.

I passed out in college watching a childbirth video in a first aid class. In my defense, I was extremely hung over. :cheers2: No such problem in the delivery room. The "unkindest cut" was a bit disturbing. I asked the doc for an extra stitch or two for the wife. The doc was female and not amused! You will do fine!

I am not a fan of any kind of blood, guts, etc. but it is different being your kid.

Still pretty gross but not pass out gross. Honestly the birth is the easy part at least for us guys. The sleep deprivation they put you through will kill you later. :ack2:

Just kidding. good times. Good luck to you!

as an anesthesiologist I have witnessed thousands and thousands of births and all are unique and special for those involved... don't worry about passing out or puking, happens all the time

epidurals are much better than advertised, friends will tell you all the horror stories on how it didn't work, wore out or was painful but in the right hands is a safe, quick, painless and very effective procedure.

I have seen deliveries that were videotaped, webcasted and photographed beyond belief, have seen them with everybody ranging from grandpa and kids, neighbors and drinking buddies in attendence (one time 14 people were in the delivery room!!) but by far the best times are witnessing first time mom and dads see their new baby come into this world and into their arms.

Enjoy the whole experience, believe me you will never forget it!!

STAY BEHIND HER SHOULDERS! For the love of god don't get anywhere near that war zone that day. You'll never want to remember your sand box looking like that. With that being said it's prob the most amazing feeling you'll ever have so take it all in. Congrats.

You can do that. You can do whatever you feel most comfortable with. None of it grossed me out, but I passed on the cord-cut. I didn't see it giving me any enhanced experience of the event. If I were the only guy in the room and had to, it wouldn't have been a problem. Most of all, the experience sort of removes you from the reality of what's going on.

Mostly, remember it's her that's going through this. It's your job to make it as best for her as possible. They're all different. And there's alot of hormones flowing around. You won't know how her experience is until it happens.

P.S. Every guy asks for the extra stitch. If you don't your doctor is going to think you're a homo.

no chit.. We had 4 residents 3 nurses the doc and 2 EMS guys in our room.. All the nurses were waiting for me to pass out. I had to tell them to catch my mother in law when she was going limp.

Almost......

Just went through this less that 2 weeks ago but it was a C-Section and not bad at all. I actually got a picture of the little guy half in and half out of moms stomach.

Get all the sleep you can now. I thought everyone was exaggerating but they weren't. I have felt like a zombie for last 13 days now and I am not seeing a light at the end of tunnel anytime soon. We are sleeping in about 2 hour intervals if we are lucky. But it is worth it.

I chose not to cut the cord either. No real reason why. I just let the pros do their job.

I was in the delivery room when I son was born. We was delivered through a C section, I hid behind the sheet! Pretty intense day for us, Nikki was in labor 18 hours and 2 epidurals, then final had to go this route. Best day of my life for sure!
