View Full Version : Hudson River Fun Run 2010

It’s about that time again folks! We have had some outstanding interest in the Hudson River Fun Run that we have been participating in.
Here is what we think would be some good dates.
May 15th 2010 or
May 22nd 2010
Please take the poll.
There will be more details to follow. As usual, we will make the determination the day of the run whether or not to run South to NYC or up River towards Kingston depending on weather and water conditions.
We have some great folks helping us out on getting the lunch and dinner stops organized. If you have any ideas or can lend a hand, just shoot me an email. In the past we have let the run just take form on its own. This year, we would like to try to have it shaped for better parking, slips, and accommodations.
Anyone interested in a helicopter? Some of our friends can help coordinate this but we need a head count along with funds. The more that are in for it, the less it will cost.
This is a very fun and low stress run with no cost for our fellow boaters.

South. I have a lot of interest in going down to the city. We are looking to leave early enough to head south. Come back up and meet for lunch around 1:30-2:00 and then if anyone would like to head north we can fuel up and do that all in the same location.

any updates on this run? new to the board and would like to try to make this run. i live in Greenwood Lake, NY so i am only about 35 minutes from Stony Point. i was actually over there today in the truck driving around the Hudson checking it out. i used to work at Gorden ford 15 years ago in Havestraw. the area changed a lot since i was there many years ago.

i was told about the site and run from Jersey Outlaw, and would like to try and make it since i am only 20 miles or so away. any updates would be much appreciated.

27' Baja Shooter with a 540. pushing about 650+ HP. would like to get it out on the Hudson and run it wide open for a few miles. i am on a 9 mile lake with a speed restriction of 45MPH. so it is hard to get it running wide open unless it is real early or later after the Police boats go in.

i cannot stand the ugly yellow and pink stripes on it. WHAT WAS BAJA THINKING? that totally ruins a performance boats look.

Nordic / Matty,

where you guys located? and what boats are you running? we dock at willow point marina. there is about 10 of us over there, but only two performance boats, my Baja and my buddies 28 Sunsation. we are there pretty much all weekend in the summer. stop in anytime. we have a big hangout area where we bbq and drink.

i hope to get the boat together tomorrow, i received the fuel pump and other stuff i needed today from summit, my carb is set to arrive tomorrow, hope to be able to get the boat running in the 80's. i am 73 on GPS now. so hopefully with the new fuel system, carb and labbed 28 Bavo 1, i put the boat in the 80's. only issue is i will not have enough time to install the hyd. steering and 24'' K-Planes before the 15th. so i am going to have to take it easy. could be a scary ride without the K-planes.

I have been to willow point a few times over the years, Richie has the sunsation right?

I have an old donzi hornet i just got that I am going thru and I usually run around with my buddy Kenny who has a very nice old 20 cig.

Nordic ( Anthony)comes out of the jersey end with a really nice fountain.

Kenny and I had a chance to meet Nordic ,JoeD, and pure energy up at the lake george poker run a few years back, great bunch of people we had a blast.I've met Tom from mahopac and Morgan from Sutphen good guys too. the fun run should be awesome if you can make it :)

sounds like a plan we'll have to stop by one of these days.

STOMPER
05-06-2010, 10:50 PM
yeah, richie has the 28' sunsation. your buddy is the guy with the 20' ciig that just had some motor work done last year at willow? lives on the lake across from willow? i remember rick (mechanic from willow) working on a older cig. putting new heads on it. anyway, we are always there, so stop in anytime. richie and i are always hanging out, so pretty much when out, we are hanging.

i do not foresee any reason why i would not make the run, so i plan on making it. it is my wife's 40th birthday on the 14th, and she is dying to go on the run as well for a sort of borthday party/ first time on the boat for the season.

i will be at the marina most of the weekend running the hell out of the boat. the cops have not been out this year yet, so good to get a fast runs in while tuning. going to be slightly cool, but i should be there if your out and about. i only live about a mile (right where 17 comes together by the bagel store and the old dolphin fitness) from willow point, so i run there often to run the boat.

mattyboy
05-07-2010, 07:25 AM
yup that's the boat. I live up the block from the rainbow.
the cig is going in the water tonight after work. I'm giving him a hand.

sounds good with my new boat i think Rick's skill will be needed also so i'll be around willow from time to time.

forgot to reply to thee leaving G.L./warwick area question and was going to ask the same thing. last weekend i ran over to Stony Point to check the area out again, but the GPS brought me through the park. not sure what is the best way to go with towing the boat. any routes traveled before would be much appriciated as well. only been living here for about 10 months.

mattyboy

I sold my old donzi 2 season ago so i was a passenger all of last year, you probably have seen my old donzi all red white deck a guy over at elliott's has it. nice pics I was saying no that can't be GWL LOL

going over it in my mind there are three ways I can think of to get there

1. thru the park
2. over rt 6 to west point ( rt 293 truck route)and down rt 9 ( or can you tow on the palisades at that point to the bear mtn bridge circle? long mtn pkwy to the palisades to rt 9)
3.down rt 17 to rt 202 to haverstraw then up rt 9 to stony point

Nordic probably has a route

Hey Stomper it looks like I will also be out there Sunday morning. I just got the heads back on one motor that needed a valve job and had it running today. We are leaving for the poker run around 8 am that saturday and we could meet you at the A&P in West Milford if you want. well i do not think i will be making it this upcoming weekend. took the boat out today and i am pretty sure i wasted the Bravo 1 Outdrive. could not get it on the trailer since it was way to windy and would have been a hard time towing it into the ramp. so for now i have it tied up in a slip.

Nordic - no good. was not the drive. either lost a rod cap, or ate a piston. yanking the engine out tomorrow. spark plug was hit pretty good, did not drop a valve, so it was something in the cylinder. either it ate up a piston or just lost a cap. praying nothing more happened and it is a easy fix. going to take the engine down to Fonse Performance (they are exp. with marine engines and have a dyno to fine tune it) unless anyone can recommend a place local. that are all the way down near Philly, but have a dyno and know marine tuning well. email or call me with the info if anyone knows a good place. Mahopac Marine, any recommendations?

going to take the engine down to Fonse Performance (they are exp. with marine engines and have a dyno to fine tune it) unless anyone can recommend a place local.

My buddy Tom 32 Baja has A Fonse engine brand new with 2 hours on it and the same thing happened. He blew up the new Fonse motor within a few hrs. The machine shop we use has a Fonse motor on the floor where the lifter valley was reworked by Fonse. The lifters seized in the block so bad they had to throw the block away. He is sueing Fonse.

Have you read OSO under beware? We have a machine shop in Westwood NJ we use who is pretty good. He does about 300 motors per year.

Read all the stories on OSO.

WOW! Seems like 540's are their weak point. F*O*N*S*E Performance.

Here is an example they were contracted to build a turn key, fully dressed 540 with a procharger useing the Fast XFI system and to be tuned by al himself.

The motor came back not dress, no headers, no xfi harness, no starter, 2 bolts missing in the blower bracket.

So I thought no big deal he told me the harness is all plug in play its in the box. well that was a joke. i called him and he was confused. so he sent me another harness. this one had 1 more of the plugs on it that i needed, but it also cam with a few cut wires, melted wires that i had to repair, the coil harness was not there, we had to integrate the XFI harness to the Merc harness. all items that were supose to be done.

so we removed the valve covers to paint them because they scratched them with the lifting chain. we noticed a milky substance laying on the head so i called him and sent pics of it. he told me it was assemble lube mixed with oil, or condesation because of the cold water used to dyno it, and i should not worry and just put it in and run it.

we also noticed the rollor of the rocker is not centered on the valve which it should be according to dart and crowler. some rockers have less than half the roller on the valve. again called and sent him pics. he said quit worring and just run it.

so we finished dressing it. dropped it in, got it running, and had a nightmare of a time getting it to run or idle. the harness he sent had a broken wire under the covering. supposed to have been a new harness. once running the idle was all over the board.

so finally we get it in the water. idled it in the marina about 15 min. messing with the idle. seems to be ok.

now we are ready to go out we idle out about 5 min ride to open water i ease it up on plain it struggled a little poured out black smoke then plained out. now we are running 40mph checked all guages seem good running smooth i go about 3/4 mile saw another boat coming at us on our side so i wanted to pass on the other side so i stepped it up to 45- 50 mph for 10-15 sec. and went a round. then backed off to about 40mph for about 3/4 mile to a straight in the river and figured lets push it up a little so started throttling up now running 52 mph again keep in mind this 800hp motor is in a 28 foot low profile cat that ran a true gps 99.6 mph with a 700 hp motor. so again at 52 mph i check the guages all ok continuing with more throttle but no more speed, guages still ok, i trim it up thinking maybe the drive picked up something. but not the case. now almost full throttle (guages still ok) i start backing off the throttle watching the guages, the oil pressure has dropped to 40psi i continue backing down to idle and the oil pressure went to 0 psi engine stalled and locked up. oil had blown out the breathers and was milky but the oil looked ok on the stick and smelled of fuel bad.

so towed it back got in touch with al which is nearly impossible through out this whole job(shop meetings, he's on the dyno, at the doctors) he had all the excuses. so we tow the boat 2 hours to him to check it out. after a week i get in touch with him. he finds water in 1 cylinder and claims my water cooled header was leaking but when we got down there we tested the header and it did not leak, but when we got home we heated the header and checked it again there was a slight drip not a stream or major leak. we tested it with with 25 psi of water pressure. more than under normal comditions.

so i pulled the motor at his shop and left it for his guys to dissasemble monday. so after almost 2 weeks he tells me the crank is shot, i need all new pistons, and a complete head job. so we go down (2 hr drive) to see this. boy were they surprised to see us. al jr didn't want to talk to us so we talked to sr and the guy who took it apart. sr was showing us the block in the engine stand and he said let me turn it over as he did the crank fell out on the floor. at that point i knew i was taking the motor home.

the crank was burnt so bad on the first cap it turned the block and crank black, there are 3 melted pistons, and clearly 1 blown head gasket pointed out by al sr and agreed with by his assembler.

al claims all this is from my header, keep in mind there was that milky substance in the heads that i questioned even before we started the motor. also i now find out he dynoed the motor with his manifolds not my headers about a 25 hp difference.

he now tells me $5500.00 to fix it. WHAT HAPPENED TO WE STAND BEHIND OUR MOTORS? THATS A JOKE!

yeah they stand by it and tell you how much it will cost to fix it.

we had 2 engine builders look at the damage and a sample of the oil that came out Which had a ton of fuel in it and barely any water in it. both builders came to the conclusion that this motor was hurt on the dyno and most likely poped the head gasket on the dyno and the first time out just did it in.

now i'm left with a blown motor an empty pocket, and no help from al or his company. yes his ad on offshore looks great and proffessional. but it is far from the truth. they were great to me when i dropped it off then i was just a number.

beware and stay away from them.

Well here is what shut me down for the weekend (see photos), two pieces of an intake valve on cylinder #6. found the smaller piece in Cylinder #1 and the larger piece stayed in 6. i bought the engine from someone off Team Baja Marine and it was fresh out of Merkel Race Engines in L.I., but guess they did not put S.S. Intake valves and Imconel Exhausts in. so the intakes being in a damp environment began to pit last season and it just so happened while tuning it saturday, #6 cyl. intake gave way and shut me down for the hudson run.

Anthony (Nordic95) - i talked to frank, he is extremely busy and will call me tomorrow to see what he can do and provide his pricing. but i was just told there is a guy (mike or mark bend?) right here in Greenwood lake who has a machine shop right in his garage and does crazy roundy round motors. so i am going to give him a call and see what he might be able to do. might be a diamond in the ruff. the guys i talked to say this guys engines are bullet proof, he worked for Olsen engines for years then decided to work out of his house and do it for him self. they say his garage is spotless as well. that is a big plus in my book (not to say mine is in any way, shape or form) but by engine being built by someone like that makes me feel a lot better when i drop a few grand.

also, as per our discussion about reversion, frank stated if did not see water in the oil, then he highly doubts with the CMI exhaust i had a reversion issue. he feels it was mainly due to the cheap valves in the heads.

Bob Madara from marine Kinetics is putting together a cam, valves, springs package right now and the only thing left is to find out who can turn my short block around quickly. LRB Performance can do it in about 8 to 10 days. so i might just stick with him for now.

If you want to start at the very end of the Hudson you can do Liberty Landing. They have a public ramp over there that you could use. You should be fine leaving your truck there but I would double check they are OK with that.
