Facebook Spammers Hit High-Performance Contacts

Just a heads-up: Like me, many of you have lots of folks in the high-performance powerboat world as your Facebook friends. In the past three days, I have received roughly 10 spam messages containing viruses disguised as non-existent YouTube videos. But here's the thing: All of them have come from my contacts in the go-fast boat world.

How whatever low-life crawled out from under his or her rock and created this junk is beyond me and, because I work on a Mac, I'm mostly immune to PC viruses. But I just want you guys to be aware that if you get some Facebook message from a performance-boat buddy with a YouTube link, don't open it.

I got one yesterday. I didn't open it since I figured it was, then I got a real message saying that it was. if I had opened it, it would have sent the virus to everyone on my friend list. Probably just a coincidence it is from high perf guys.

I had one of these over the weekend...deleted my friends and posted some weird stuff under my name, luckily i caught it in time, i just had to change my password and refresh some things.

Don't download anything from Facebook. If you already have, start at the top of this list. Install the products one at a time. After you install each one, be sure to install all of their updates. Have each one complete a full scan before proceeding to the next one. One of these *should* fix your problem. Work down the list until your problem disappears. Keep in mind that everyone of these things is either free of charge or open source. That also means that the updates are free. Running the software with out the updates is the same as not running it at all. In addition to anti-virus software, you should also have anti-spyware software.

You should use more than one anti-spyware package because there is no one spyware package that will detect everything. Each one will pick up things that the others miss. Part of this is based on what gets submitted to the people who make the software which in turn is based on what the users encounter. There are so many that its hard to create a comprehensive list of everything out there that spies on you.

When you're done, be sure to go to Windows Update and apply ALL of the patches. Don't just run the "Express" updates. Run "Custom" and pick all of the software that's available to you. It make take several times before you no longer have patches. Once that's done, be sure to turn on your automatic updates. For Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525. Make sure that you're not running a cracked version of Windows or other software packages. Software doesn't get cracked for the benefit of humanity. It gets cracked because a hacker somewhere wants you run his software on your computer. That means he can use your computer to serve porn and send spam. Or capture your user names and passwords for identity theft.

Yeah, I would chalk it up to coincidence, too, but every piece of viral spam I got this time around was from a high-performance contact, from Gary Stray at Geico/AMF to Ian Hawkins at Ilmor. If it is in fact concidence, it's a weird one.

Got one from Charlie McCarthy a couple months ago that said "hey i found a sexy picture of you heres a link to it" lol . . . . i suspected that one right from the get go :D

I deactivated mine last week- never went there and never gave a crap how many chickens some ones farm had.

If you deactivate your account from the "Deactivate Account" section on the Account page, your profile and all information associated with it are immediately made inaccessible to other Facebook users. What this means is that you effectively disappear from the Facebook service. I deactivated my FB account in January. Got a virus from it last year so we now have Norton, but the web runs way too slow using the anti-virus.

I don't miss FB at all, but I miss talking to those I haven't seen (old friends, not HS) in years. I don't miss the BS of people getting pizzy when they see pics at a function we were at asking why they weren't included. :rolleyes:

One word...Mac

Norton failed me big time last year and a virus got through and caused a catastrophic failure of my PC. I can't tell you how devastating it was since it also housed my business information.

I'm done with PC, I couldn't be happier with my Mac.

I don't like Norton.... It uses too many valuable operating resources from your machine and slows it down... The status monitor slows the machine down and it's automatic update also blows... The virus protection is good but it's a bear of a program, especially if you have an older PC. We like Symantic better... Spybot is great as well...
