Just finished building my first AR. Just thought I'd post it up after the AR thread from a month ago. I've got just under a grand in it, which is pretty darn good considering the quality of nearly all the parts. I spend a lot of my Christmas vacation downtime finding the great deals.:USA:

My M&P40 is actually my nightstand gun for HD.

Great looking weapon! You did great for $1K. What barrel did you use? Bob

Thanks.:sifone:

It's a BCM middy. Aero Precision lower.

To be fair, the rail was "used", but basically brand new.

They are just labels on the rails so you can know where you had things if you remove them and replace them. I don't think there's any other use, but I may be wrong.

Your eyes are pretty good, or your monitor huge?

Edit: I guess the pics blow up big enough. Camera quality is suspect for brand new.

SOS auto-resizes them. The pic is only 96.7KB, most likely came out of your camera a much larger file with better clarity.

I wish.

In actual size it's just huge and grainy. Starting to be real disappointed with this camera. Bought it because it's waterproof for the boat, it might just stay on the boat. Pentax.:(

I just did the lower. Bought a barreled upper.

It wouldn't be hard at all to do the upper, but I lacked the tools and would have spent too much buying everything. Also, I didn't find it to be a better deal really.

5.56 NATO or .223

If I want something bigger I can get a new upper/barrel for bigger rounds.

Does the $1K include the Aimpoint? If so, I want to know where you are shopping.

Not to hijack the thread...

But how do you like your M&P?

I'm looking hard at an XDM but would love feedback on other options.

Gonna go get a Judge next week sometime. That's just one of those have to have guns for me.

It's actually a Primary Arms Aimpoint M3 clone. I did quite a bit or searching, and this thing has tons of great reviews. It is shockingly quality for the price, $79 with mount. I'm very impressed so far, and it's more than adequate for my non-battle rifle. It is "chinese junk" unfortunately, but as an Aimpoint is Swedish "junk".... I couldn't find anything American for less than 8 times as much unfortunately.:(

The under 1K does include the site though.

I love it.

The ergonomics are way better than the XD's (for me at least). Not a single malfunction in just over 1k rounds, and that's with some being shot by new shooters/chicks.

Also, made in the US rather than Checkloslovakia or wherever the XD's are, and Smith's customer service is first rate.

Check it out for sure, as there are M&P targets, which I believe are similar to the XDM's (longer barrel?).

Those rails are called Picatinny Rails. They were developed at the US Army Arsenal in Picatinny, New Jersey. They are a US DoD standard, MIL-STD-1913. They're also now a NATO standard STANAG 2324.

Each location on the rail is numbered. Since there are literally hundreds of different accessories that can be mounted to these rail systems, you can determine what components go at what position and place those accessories in the exact relative place each time. If you change weapons, you can place your aiming device in exactly the same spot regardless of the individusl rifle. If you have night-vision optics, an IR aiming device, etc, you don't have to adjust and test. You stick it where you've already estabilshed works for you and you go.

I love the M&P and its made in the US, unlike the XD. The sig DAK are also similar, meaing a lighter double action only, as opposed to heavy double, then light single action. Skip the Judge. If you want shot shells in a revolver, get a .357, or .44 magnum and get the appropriate shells for it.

But wonder if you wanna remove your vfg one day and put it back the next?:willy_nilly:

I don't quite get the need for labels, even for soldiers. They can count right?
