appears LORAN will shutdown next month.

most new gps's will transfer loran#s to lat/long just keep in mind not all translate accurately

I thought they were being kept active until the failing GPS satellites can be replaced.

They have more satellites than needed, so even if a few fail it is still ok. Plus they are sending another up I think early this year and will continue to do so to keep it up to date.

Power and Motoryacht ( Feb 2010) said the Loran budget was not renewed and by the time you read this article the signal will be already turned off (early Jan was the cutoff date, magazine came in mail today).

wow did not know it was still on up here on the great lakes i thought it was off long ago and i have not seen a loran on a boat in more than 10 years

LORAN actually had better repeatability then GPS. You could mark a place and return to it with better accuracy.

In all honesty, it's a dead technology, and has been at best over the last decade, a needless back-up to other navigational offerings. I doubt it will be missed too much.
