??????????????

Two holes in the side which I'm guessing are the vents for the steps, just no cut outs in the chine. Again, maybe optical delusion?

I saw those and thought the same thing but I still don't see any steps.
What looks like a step IS a trailer reflection........I think?

Look where the trailer wheel well drops back off; shaddow/reflection is gone after that and is gone before it starts- the 1st one sort of looking like a step. If it were a step one may even say it is facing the wrong direction.

I may be on to some thing- Zeus backward drives and backward steps. Wonder is the Baron is already working on this?

Do the holes/vents flow towards the transom? Are there corresponding holes/vents in the bottom? Forcing air in from the side and out the bottom to aerate the hull?

No. It was Reichmans old boat. Dave

I've seen a few Phantom's up close, it's basically a ventilated step, sorta like the OuterLimits have with Naca Ducts on the deck from what I rememeber. The outside chine does not have a step, it begins away from the outside pad.

In the attached pic you can see what I believe is the two steps.

Chris

I get the vent, but where are the steps?

Here!

On the smaller ones the step is further down near the first chine to the keel, sorta like the keel is cut out.

When I first saw it I thought it was a neat design and I've never really heard anything about Phantom's spinning out.

I did hear the 34' rides a little hard but other than that it's fast!

Geronimo36

Maybe a better what to explain is the V sorta turns into a pad and flattens the bottom and there are air holes where it "steps" up. Kinda hard to explain I guess but it makes sense when seeing it.

Any Phantom owners have pics of their bottoms?

Chris

This picture of my old 30 Phantom raceboat shows how the step is ventilated from the holes on the side. The non-canopied one is my current boat and shows the ventilation hole on the side.

Frank,

Good accurate post. Will Smith's boats suck air where the holes are then have small steps with mutiple outlets to aerate the bottom. The design flat out works. I have a single step with a single hole, on each side of the boat (look at Twisted Styx-Simmons Marine 34' Phantom, World Champs for the past few years in P3 & P4).

If you see it in person it is much apparenent from the transom. Will had had this in his design before 1999.

You can see the air hole just above the trailer's second tire on my 34' Phantom. But you do not see the step, but it is there. Picture of port and starboard, holes on both sides of the boat. It work so well, that my depth gauge will not work when running do to the air running down the bottom while on plane (sender is in the boat/engine compartment, not externally fixed on the bottom)

My bottom is like that picture, great post, just cannot see the step with the holes.

Actually they all have different bottoms !!!!!

All ever build 39's ( 3 ) are completeley different on the hull.

The only one still original is the MID AMERICAN Boat

Davis motorsport ( X reichman's ) is filled in complete.

X fury, is filled in partley and has now arnesons with a filler plate out of aluminum .

ALL OF THESE 39's NEED BIG POWER or they will not run.
with 525's the 2 fastest where Fury #1 107 MPH and MidAmerican #2 103 MPH
Reichman's boat never ran over 96 MPH with the 525's

Other then that ,,great handling !!!!!
Here is a pic of the other 2.

scott i was in the Illmors and Arnisons at 107 at 3/4 throttle ,, so i would say the Illmor boat was so far the fastest,i don,t know what the top speed would be,, but it would be 2 or 4 more mphs.

I think davis's boat is the fastest now ,,or atleast was with the big Cobra motors .

X fury,,,,113.8 max ,but will not turn because no water to the arnesons because of the nice plate will made ?! Sorry,,it is what it is !!!!

I thought this boat was a straightbottom in KW. Now I know the real story. It was one of the best sounding boats down there. What power is in it? Big cobras?

How and why did they do this? After looking at Smarty's Freeze Frame pic that sounds to me like lots of difficult work and a lot of added weight.

Yes, I know Richie and Frank somehow from the races in Clearwater and KW and gotta say I´m happy the guys are getting some seattime in it.
It´s been an adjustment to get them Cobras sing but Frank can swing it.

Weight? The boat rigged barely weighed 8300 lbs with added bulk heads, all the mods and stuff.

For P1 they had to add a lot of weight

So if I read this correctly, the Arneson drive 39' Phantom with Illmors (550's,625's, or 710's?), not 525 Mercs. runs 113.8 mph (that is 114 mph). Is that the final answer? I am not sure what a filler plate is and what that does to the top end, or the handling. I read that turning is affected. If the plate was remedied, would the top end improve too, or just turning? (This is not a rocker plate, right?)

Teach me...pictures are a great teaching tool, my $.02

Did JD Byrider finsh second overall in their class this year at Key West? What place did that boat finish each race, curious.?

The 34 does not "Ride Hard" I love the way mine rides and it runs strong with Tyler Crockette tweaking my 500s.
