View Full Version : New Boat Purchase?

Chris
10-27-2009, 11:09 AM
It just occurred to me- I've made it almost a whole calendar year without buying a boat. :)

That got me to thinking. How many here have purchased a new or new/used boat in '09?

Post a pic. And a little back story- how you found it, how you bought it, etc.

I just received a big box of Serious tee shirts- we'll see about some prizes for the best one's.

Bought this 85' Race 24 Skater in January 09 Since I've re powered with 300 promax's new interior gauges throttles ect ect and it's finally being rigged as we speak! It will be finished by the end of the month That most recent pic is still missing the polished sportmasters, new windshield and interior that I have but have not put in yet

Bought this in July. It's the wife's boat...but she let's me use it for fishing.:sifone:

It's a 2005 Pro-Line 19 Sport. My buddy Hugh called me to tell me about it. The guy just wanted it gone because he didn't use it enough. When I went up to get it...it had 7 hours and 58 minutes on it. According to the bread crumb feature on the GPS (which the owner had no idea was there), the boat had left it's creek twice. A grand total of 42 miles on it!!!! the best feature is that it has a porta-potty in the console special order!

Basically a brand-new boat...for just a little more than 1/3rd the price!! :cool::sifone:

I also bought a small center console this year, lucky for two reasons, one because my real boat was down for most of the season for various things :ack2: And two because I had a trailer to lend Craig :sifone: love my little center console.

Brand new Donzi ZXO. Picked it up at Donzi.

I took my Wife, Brother, and my two little ones up to AOTH (Donzi run on Lake Cumberland KY) earlier this year. My kids are 2 YO, and at the time 2 Months Old.

Bottom line is on my little 20' Donzi Minx we didn't even have room to put our feet down on the floor because we were loaded with cooler, diaper bag, life jackets, lines, fender, etc.

The kids did great though, so the wife approved me to look for a newer and bigger boat. Found the ZXO line from Donzi and was looking used. Two separate deals fell through. The 2nd guy basically screwed me... I had the loan in place and deal basically done... was planning on leaving the next day to hand him the check and pick it up and he calls and says he sold it to someone else (even though he knew I had a loan, check, etc. ready to go... bastard).

I found the new ZXO on Donzi's site in FSU colors (Wife and I are FSU grads). Made an offer, Donzi countered very reasonably, went to the factory to pick it up a few days later. Craig Barrie really appreciates family and helped me out a lot!!!

So... Here is "Unconquered" 2008 Donzi ZXO, twin 6.2 Mags, latham steering, etc.

First pic at the Donzi factory putting it on the trailer.
2nd is me and my Dad on an East Coat Donzi Run that my Bro and I put together
3rd Pic is my little Holly sleeping in the mid cabin. her favorite place.

Going out in the boat used to be for me... now the kids and the wife ask to go out, it's truly been a great year for Daddy!!!

I like Vette, have a Donzi Classic but mine was 22. However I still needed more room for momma and the boy! I used to be into inboards and all the water sports before I got into HP boating. I wanted my boy to appreciate the hp stuff but also want him to do the water sports so we started looking for inboards. I picked up a loaded 2004 Malibu Wakesetter back in late Jan 09 and kept 22 Donzi!

Here is my 27' Fountain. I am so happy with this boat. I found it on ebay this year and had to have it. We drove 9 hours both ways to pick it up. It was well worth the drive. With just a little TLC it will be just the way we want it.

You can see in the pictures that i have already painted the trailer and that make a huge difference. I have added some LED lights inside as well as more speakers so we can hear the music when we are running.

Let me know what ya think...

A couple more.... The picture of the Truck and Boat is on its way home from me picking it up. That was a long drive. I had never towed anything that big before and i didnt know if the trailer would make it or not. the winch strap ended up breaking on the way home and i had to buy a new one.

That mid-cabin design is priceless with kids. With the open bow the breeze blows through the cabin on hot days and gets the kids out of the sun. The 6.2's are perfect for that boat and sip fuel. The only time I get nervous about the open bow is going to the Bahamas since I can't aways predict the weather and a big wave over the bow is not good!

My Dad just bought a left over 08 21' Sail Fish CC this past thursday for his place in Florida. The sits on a aluminum trailer and has a 150 hp Yamaha OB. Said it rides much bigger than a 21'. He already has inside rack storage, I can't wait to get down and go for a ride maybe even do some fishing. I know he has been working on the dealer since June which was the last time they were at the place down there. They were there for 2 weeks and he pulled the trigger. I know my dad is really excited, he did not boat at all this summer on Lake Michigan, his cruiser is up for sale and didn't get wet this summer!

I just bought (but haven't received it yet) a 1980 27' Excalibur.
I sold my 22' Scarab to get into something bigger. I called Jeff for some Magnum advice and fell into this deal. Can't wait to get her in the water, and being here in the Houston area I will hopefully still be able to do that in November.

Being rigged up with a brand new 502 as we speak. Should be able to test-fire it tomorrow if all goes well.

I bought my first boat after a few years of kicking props.:sifone:

Picked up this 28 Powerplay with a HP500 out of Texas. Bought it from a small dealer who had got it at auction after it was repoed. It's 1 of only 3 or so single 28 PP's.

It was CG doc'd, so no title. I bought it at the begining of summer and I'm still dickin with the CG and the bank to get the "right" paperwork because the stupid CG will only except their forms for everything through the chain. (bills of sale from bank to dealer, dealer to me, etc). It's been a nightmare.

Luckily, after basically learning the secratary of state's job and telling them exactly what to do, I was able to at least get it registered by just showing them an application for a transfer of documentation.:willy_nilly:

I traded my 90' 35 in at Shogren at the end of July for the 04' 42. 14 Hrs. towing each way. Thanks to Cosmic12 and my youngest son Kyle for taking the trip and making things smooth. It was time for a change although you would not believe me if I told you how much I could miss the 90', I knew that boat inside out. It will be awhile before I get there with this 42, but I will!!

I traded my '92 Wellcraft 26' Nova for a '99 38' Scarab AVS so I wouldn't get tossed around on LOTO anymore. I'd been kicking props for years and finally found "the one." With the economy in the tank and snow blowing in Green Bay (boat's home port) I thought I got a fair deal. It's got Merc 540 Bulldogs, extension boxes and shorepower A/C. I really enjoyed the boat this past summer and got lots of compliments... maybe I'm not the only guy who likes these old Scarabs! Now, if I just knew how to drive twins... :sifone:

That thing is BAD A$$ ! I looked at one when I was looking for my first boat (1985) . I'm kinda glad I didn't get it because I probably would have killed someone after putting a 700 HP engine in it or something, but I have always wanted one, very cool boat. That looks awsome!!!!!!! we need a little more info on that.
Where did you find it?
It's a 1980 27' Excalibur Speedster.
I don't know much other than what I have read and researched myself.
So far from what I gathered it came from Florida a few (4-5) years ago.

I don't know who owned it in Florida (haven't found him yet), but if anyone else knows...I'd LOVE to hear about it. I'm really wanting to know as much as I can about the boat's history. It has blue stripes with stars on the bow and used to have a big blue decal/panel on the back 1/4 of the hull. Apparently it was a decal that was removed.

OSO member "Shannenski" (maybe a member here also) bought it and it was in Knoxville, TN for a while with him. From what I'm told he's a "boat guy" (fiberglass guy), and he said he went over the boat in detail. Story is it is very solid and needed minor work in some areas...which he already fixed.
Then it was sold to OSO member "MyScarab30" and brought to Kansas. After he blew the motor (I think) he built or bought a motor from Jeff1000Man (Houston, TX). Then he decided to use that motor in another project and put the hull up for sale.
Then...it ended up in the garage of OSO member "Jeff1000Man" garage in the Houston area...without power.

I had my eye on a Magnum in Illinois (Thriller) for a month or so and talked to the owner about it several times. I called Jeff1000Man to talk about the Magnum "Thriller" since he seems to be quite an authority on Magnum boats. After a few conversations we started talking about a deal on this Excalibur that he wanted to unload to pay more attention to his own Magnum he is trying to finish.

Long story short (too late)...I get to move up from an old 22' Scarab to an old (with new power) 27' Excalibur. I'm stoked.

My plan is to run it as is for most of next season and then start to tear it down for a more thorough restoration. Obviously it needs gelcoat and paint work, and that will probably be the majority of my re-store. There are lots of updates already installed including Gaffrig gauges, new controls, hatch lifts, K-planes, new 502 being installed this week, new interior upholstry, etc... but the hull is a bit dinged up and needs some attention. I'm planning on all white with a traditional (but modern-ized and updated) "Excalibur" decal w/ the sword on the sides of the boat.

I look forward to my 1st water-run report which (God willing) should happen next week.

I sure didn't need another boat, but a friend had this 2001 Sea Ray 280 Sundancer, and he wanted to trade for my 2000 38' Sportscoach motorhome that I have not used much for the last few years and was beginning to cost a lot to maintain and keep while it depreciated about as bad as a boat and he was willing to kick in a fair amount of difference. I had been thinking about taking a 2 week trip up or down the waterway for some time, so I figured the Sea Ray would do the job and it wouldn't be any worse trying to sell the Sea Ray than it would to sell the motorhome, so we traded. Still haven't got to take the trip, but the boat is for sale.http://i25.tinypic.com/2qtbl9d.jpghttp://i29.tinypic.com/dyqfer.jpg

We made a significant change this year as well. Sometimes I regret selling the Cig as I spent countless hours updating this and that. Had it just the way I wanted everything, then I decided to list it. Well, much to my surprise considering the boat market this year, it was sold and gone within 10 days!

Ironic deal is that the Cig went right back to where I bought it. In fact, the exact same address. Current owner had purchased the house that the previous owner to me had. Wierd story, but all true. He knew the boat, saw it listed, and bought it.

Already had my eye on the Cobalt 293, excellent shape, only 130 hours and loaded with nearly all options offered by Cobalt, genset, AC, head, microwave. You name it, it's got it. Boating is definately different for us now!

New to me 33. Well kinda new to me. Travis is correct. This boat is back at the same address it was at 10 years ago.. When I bought my house this boat was sitting in the driveway and the owner (a friend of mine) was trying to sell me the boat. I had been on the boat many times and loved it. I declined to buy it - for whatever reasons.
Travis ended up w/ the boat and took great care of her. I saw it for sale and thought it was meant to be so here she is back here. I bought it on Memorial Day and used it the entire season. Some of my neighbors thought they were losing their minds when they saw the boat in the driveway again. Travis updated a lot of the boat and it looks like a different boat than the one I saw 10 years ago. I have some plans of my own, I'll keep you posted.

Travis you can come up for a ride whenever you want.

Well I was looking for a boat for years but always had something come up and drain my savings. I started to like the Checkmate 253's that I found on line but all were far away. Then one day I took the long way home and this was staring at me as I drove down the road. I took a look and loved it. Did a sea trial & survey on December 1st. The rest is history. Its a '96 253 with a 454 mag. 297 hours.

No problems now, it must have been user error. A little chilly here on December first so I had on my bank robbin mask.

it's a 1988 sonic 30 ss it has the 320 efi alpha ss combo I found it on ebay in Semtember. It was a repo but was in really good shape and the price was great (15k) so I decided I could live with small blocks for awhile

sold my donzi 16 in the spring of 07 spent the summers of 07 thru 09 on my friends rides. attended a few donzi events boatless and had a chance to pick up some nice classics at a good prices. for whatever reasons most of the deals didn't pan out. I went with a friend in fall of 08 to look at a boat on long island he passed on it . In the fall of 09 I said I wonder if that boat was still for sale. it was at a much lower price than it was in 08. I borrowed a trailer and we went out to get her. we floated her off her trailer and onto the trailer I borrowed my friend pulled the boat back with his truck and I pulled the empty old trailer back. the old trailer lost some parts on the LIE and the cross bronx. the plan was if it fell apart it was staying where ever it was. we got it to my house floated it off and back onto the old trailer until a new trailer is made for it.

I am glad the deals on the other boats fell thru, I am now the proud owner of
a 1968 Donzi Benchseat Hornet hull 19H-38

I had a 24' Superboat the past few years (purchased from a family member), it had a 300 Promax. Boat really became a part of the family. I grew up boating on Long Island, but my wife never boated, so when we bought the 24'...there was some growing pains as far as enjoying it (we also had a baby about a year earlier). But as time wore on, she really grew to love the boat, and so did my son. At first, getting him on was a crying fit, but then it turned into "ok, I am up from my nap...lets go boating" . Boat was perfect for us...I had some speed for when I went alone, but we could idle around with the baby and just enjoy the beach. Late last year, we started talking about getting something bigger, because only problem was when we had company over, it got very tight on the 24' SB. About a week later I pulled into my neighbors boat slip and saw a new 30' Superboat Centerconsole docked next door....I asked if I could get on it, he took me for a ride and I was hooked on the boat. A few weeks later, I contracted with Superboat to build me a new 30 CC. I took delivery on the boat last week, and now its off to get rigged with twin 250 Mercs. Its my first 'new boat', so pretty excited.....old boat and new boat

Thanks, hopefully it will let me and the wife explore some waters that were a little too big for the 16. She already likes the fact that she's facing forward ;)

I had my 1984 velocity for almost 10 years and sold it in 2003. It had a 1984 merc 3.4 lit. I missed it so much that I had to get another. This (new to me ) velocity is a 2004 model; I bought it in August 2009 without engine then rigged it with a 250 efi.
