This place is on US1 on the Boca Raton/Deerfield line and the older steel building pancaked/collapsed during hurricane Wilma. I believe it was a 4 story building and it crushed everything in it. Most boats were totalled and the property was a mess for years during the reconstruction process.

Deerfield Beach - Saturday marked four years since Hurricane Wilma swept through South Florida. For Tom and Jacquelyn Tyghem, the recovery from that storm is almost complete.

The brother and sister are the owners of Marina One, a boat storage facility on Federal Highway on the south side of the Hillsboro Canal that is a 10- to 15-minute ride from Boca Raton Inlet. One of their two storage buildings was destroyed by Wilma, which knocked the structure off its foundation.

The Tyghems decided to rebuild and took their time to make sure the new structure could handle future storms and the storage needs of customers. The facility should be open for business in a few weeks.

"To have it back again," Tom Tyghem said, "it's wonderful."

The Tyghems have owned Marina One for 18 years. Ten years ago, they built a second facility across the street that houses a showroom for new boats up to 52 feet that they sell as well as the Marina One Yacht Club, which offers annual boating memberships and rental boats.

When Wilma approached South Florida in 2005, the Tyghems weren't too worried, because the buildings had survived a number of storms already. The Tyghams think a tornado spawned by the storm destroyed the 70-foot tall building and damaged 150 of the boats stored inside. The second building was fine.

"Some boats looked like they hadn't been touched. Others ended up in a dumpster," Tom Tyghem said. "What sticks in my head the most is coming down the road after the storm and there was something missing. It was the building.

"It was definitely shocking for us. No one thought Wilma was going to be a bad one."

After the 40-foot high pile of broken concrete and twisted steel was removed, the site was cleared down to the foundation and the Tyghems began the rebuilding process. They enlisted the aid of hurricane experts and engineers to design a building that could withstand winds in excess of 150 mph.

Tom Tyghem said the new building has steel beams that are probably three to five times the size of the beams that were in the original. And the structure was built to eliminate corrosion of those beams from salt water that drips off the boats.

All the steel columns rest a couple of inches above the floor and are attached to the foundation with stainless steel bars. That way, standing water cannot come in contact with the bases of the columns. The horizontal steel beams are coated with zinc to prevent corrosion.

Another nice feature of the cross beams is they can be re-positioned to accommodate boats of all shapes and sizes up to 50 feet. Marina One also offers storage for boats during hurricanes, but storm reservations must be purchased in advance.

The doors of the building are framed with massive steel beams. If a storm threatens, the doors can be secured with custom-made braces "that makes the doors part of the building" Tom Tyghem said. The new building also features an expanded service area so all work can be done indoors.
