DEVELOPING: Officials are scrambling to figure out how to rescue a 6-year-old boy who climbed into a homemade balloon before it floated away in Fort Collins, Colo.

The bizarre scene played out live on television and prompted fears that the flying saucer-shaped balloon would crash with the young child inside.

The child was identified as Falcon Heene, the son of a Colorado weather-chaser. The boy and his family have appeared on an episode of the ABC series "Wife Swap."

The Colorado Army National Guard was preparing to launch an OH-58 Kiowa helicopter to help in the response effort, said Capt. Michael Odgers. It wasn't immediately clear what role the helicopter would play.

Larimer County sheriff's spokeswoman Eloise Campanella says the device has the potential to rise to 10,000 feet. Sheriff's officials last saw the device floating south of Milliken, which is about 40 miles north of Denver. The craft is reportedly traveling at about 25 miles per hour.

The FAA cleared airspace near Denver International Airport.

Bill Hughes, owner of Blue Sky Balloons, a New York-based hot air balloon company, said there's two ways the balloon could potentially descend — by its occupant releasing some of the gas inside or someone adding weight to it in some way.

"One of those things would cause it to descend," Hughes told Fox News Channel.

"We were sitting eating, out looking where they normally shoot off hot air balloons. My husband said he saw something. It went over our rooftop. Then we saw the big round balloonish thing, it was spinning," said neighbor Lisa Eklund.

Additional details about the child and the balloon were not immediately available.

The balloon has landed and there is no kid in it.

The balloon landed very easily in a field but they do not know if there ever was a kid in there or if the kid fell out or of the kid didn't survive. They haven't said yet.

Yahoo reports, no sign of boy.......

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A homemade balloon aircraft floated away from a yard in Colorado after a 6-year-old boy was seen climbing inside, setting off a frantic scramble by the military and law enforcement agencies before the balloon slowly touched down in a field.

The child's fate was unclear, and there was no sign of him in the balloon when it landed. Authorities feverishly searched for any sign of the child on the ground, including in the neighborhood where he lives.

The boy has been found. He was hiding in a cardboard box in the garage attic.

Just heard on CNN they are blaming an emotionally disturbed penguin for the ballon incident, seems he stole it without the families knowledge in a misguided attempt to return to antarctica...

If he had used a real condom instead of an old ballon, there wouldn't be a kid causing all these problems.......

Nothing about this story makes any sense. Has to be a publicity stunt. There's not too many people in my neighborhood with balloons tied up in their back yards.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The man who carried out the balloon boy hoax has been sentenced to jail for the stunt.

A judge sentenced Richard Heene to 90 days in jail, including 60 days of work release that will let him pursue work as a construction contractor while doing his time. The judge also imposed conditions on Heene's probation that forbid him from profiting from the balloon spectacle in any way for four years.

Heene choked back tears as he said he was sorry, especially to the rescue workers who chased down false reports that his 6-year-old son had floated away in a balloon. He said: "I do want to reiterate that I'm very, very sorry."

Richard and Mayumi Heene pleaded guilty to charges that they carried out the balloon stunt in October to promote a reality TV show. Mayumi Heene's sentencing is under way.

The story went viral on the web but how many good people wasted their time that day....I would have tried to calculate the amount of wasted man hours and that would be their sentence!

1000 people wasted 5 hours = 5,000 hours in jail= 208.3 days in jail EACH!
