View Full Version : Key West Activities

I am really getting anxious to get to Key West, we will be there almost a week this time. Normally we have not done much other than attend the races, visit the pits, and go to the bars. I know Key West has more to offer than that, so I was wondering aside from the obvious; bars and races what else you like to do when down there.

Same here. Craig about summed it up nicely. Usually all we do is barhop, drink, watch races, barhop, drink, screw and sleep. Erin's begging me this year to actually do something...why, I have no idea. :D We're thinking about doing the dry Tortugas and snorkeling thing this year. Saturday would be our day.

The Hemingway house is a good way to waste an hour or two ,its interesting.

And i highly recommend mimosa's at PEPES for breakfast, i love the chipped beef.

Irish Kevins for the never ending drunken singalongs.

The big 52 footsailboat i run for my buddy is kept at the Hogfish in stock island these days so we will be down there.I can maybe get you out for a drunken day of sailing if you would be up to it.

This may sound homosexual but me and my wife rented bicycles and rode the perimeter of the island a few times. You get to see everything because you aren't speeding around in a car and you get exercise.

Other than that we hang at the pool and beach at the Galleon, walk around town and shop, DRINK, lose cell phones, lose wallets, lose our dignity...

A cheap date is the rent a bicycle and ride all around the island. You would be surprised what you find when exploring on a bike...tend to pick up on little things you might drive past. It is also a good way to sweat out the booze from the night before! Jet ski rentals can also be fun.

We've also done this ( http://dangercharters.com/ ). Good way to fill a day (on non race day of course). Find a coupon and it is not that expensive. We did snorkeling, kayaking and they privide food and drinks. Saw lobsters, fish of all kinds, dolphins and have a close encounter with a couple of small sharks.

bikes are not a homo thing for us at all, we ride all the time, although I think I will tell Ian to leave his tight black bike shorts with the padded crotch at home:biggrinjester: I was even thinking about renting one for the whole week. I know you will think I am crazy but I looking at getting a gym membership for the week.

Maybe if enough people are interested we could get a SOS group rental on one of those snorkeling charter boats.

Barb, I was so happy to hear you will be in Key West. I just talked to the guy at Danger Charters they have some nice outings. He told me that if we got 24 people for the sunset cruise or 20 people for the snorkeling they would give us 10% off and we would have the boat to ourselves, plus crew of course. The sunset cruise sounds good, Barb you would like it since they serve top of the line wine. I would be in for a Friday night sunset cruise and or a Saturday snorkel half day or full day. Is anyone else interested??

The wife and I went snorkling 2 years ago. Not nearly as nice as other Carribbean trips we have made but it was still a reef with 30 foot visibility. Last year my wife wanted to check out art galleries on Duval and just off Duval. I'm not much for that kind of thing but it was actually enjoyed it. Other than that I would ask why reinvent the wheel. Key West is pretty much a week long party that takes twice as long to recover from. I can't wait to get there this year!!!

trolley tour- you can jump on/off at bars you normally wouldn't get a chance to see. Ride it around for 1 full lap before picking where you want to get off at; last few years I got off too early only to get drunk and then find out there was a better bar the very next stop.

Kind of like good porn- took me 5 years to get past the 1st scene and all this time the 2nd scene was much better.

If you have a day you want to relax, go out to the fort at the Dry Tortugas and snorkel etc....

For those that are going to take this trip, an intereting fact to be aware of during your ride out to Dry Tortugas, is that the fort was actually the far turn point on the old race course.

Back in the day when the boats headed out of the harbor after making a loop, we headed for Dry Tortugas.....that is the section of water that always produced some of the greatest out of the water shots.

Here is a shot of Betty Cook covering that section of ocean.

When you make the trip, you will have a new appreciation of why the old timers still say they were involved in "Open Ocean Racing" as opposed to Offshore Racing.

Gilberts, Holiday Isle, The Fisheries, Sparkys Fish and Cocktails, Geiger Key, Hurricane hole, etc. Day and afternoon trips to Hurricane hole, Stock Island, Geiger Key. Simply hanging out at the Gallion. Bikes are a must to get around on the island. Look forward to seeing you there.:cheers2:

Anybody have any recommendations for things to do with little ones'? My wife & I are coming down + 2 under 2 years of age. We are planning on arriving on either the 7th or 8th, and staying till the 16th. On the 12th, I'm already planning on leaving KW bright & early, pending on weather, as there is a Shuttle Launch scheduled that day. But every day aside from Thursday the 12th, we have nothing planned.

My wife has given me permission, to go Snorkeling, so if there is a group that forms' from SOS, I am definitely interested. She would go too, but then we wouldn't have anyone, to watch our kids :(

I will be shooting the KW races, but this will also be a family vacation too. I would like to meet as many members', here on SOS as possible.

How much is a wave runner rental?

Would there be an option, of bringing my 21 & 6 mos olds, on a Sunset Cruise? My wife & I, want to enjoy the time in KW, as we have never been to the Keys or South Florida.

Thank you

Not much in KW for 2 under 2......and if the weather is the same that week as it is now, bring lots of sunscreen and time in the AC for them. We are having record breaking heat this week.
There is one small interesting aquatic type museum right in the Truman Annex area/dry pits. Good movie about underwater stuff and it's air conditioned, should be good for an hour or so.
Also in the annex area in the pits is the retired Coast Guard boat Mohawk that you can tour. Not for 2 yr. olds but interesting.
The Smathers Beach area is the best beach other than some of the hotel pools, and whatever hotel your staying at should have a good list of people who can baby sit. (We do have a normal community or normal people :) "within" the party stuff and island characters) and that might be an option.
One question........are you planning to leave bright and early thursday, see a launch, and return to KW?...........Do you know how tough that trip could be?
Just curious
