Towing a Cat

Technically you are allowed 102" of width. Above that you need a wide load permit or a tilt trailer (or both). However your tilt trailer should not exceed 13'6" in the "up" position lest you have unwanted contact with bridges and low overpasses. As far as length is concerned it varies by State, but 102" in width should limit you to about 46 feet in cat length......or less with the new wider tunnels.

102" - 8'6".

I recently towed a boat that was 9'8" from CT to VA. It was about 13' 2-3" high. I pooped in my pants at the first couple overpasses. In retrospect I wish I would have done a little more research and gotten the permits. I wasn't hassled but it was nerve racking, especially when we blew a tire. I was worried the police would stop us and catch on to the size.

I wouldn't stop for the EZPass tolls - we didn't because we were worried an astute toll booth operator would catch us. (EZ pass fined us $35 each occurence but it was cheaper than the fines would have been for getting caught).

What is the largest catamaran one can tow without permits or being hassled?
Thank you
Dr. Gary
Doc , every state is different and you should alway's call ahead to get the permits that are needed . Doc it can save you a whole lot of time as far as a layover goes .
