POWERBOAT RACING RETURNS TO SHEBOYGAN LAKEFRONT​

The 3rd Annual Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge, produced by Powerboat P1, takes place August 8-10 and promises exhilarating powerboat and jet ski racing on Lake Michigan.


The weekend promises a festive atmosphere for the entire family. The fun begins on Friday, August 8, with a Downtown Block Party featuring a variety of powerboats on display, food, drinks, and live music. Then, on Saturday and Sunday, powerboat and jet ski race teams will compete for the chequered flag. The best viewing area is along the lakefront at the end of South Pier Drive. Throughout the weekend, race teams will be on display in Deland Park. The event is free; however, VIP tickets are available and include food, beverages, a live stream of all the racing action, and the best viewing area for the event.

3rd annual P1 Powerboat Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge

Tomorrow will be day one of the 3rd annual P1 Powerboat Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge on Lake Michigan off the coast of Sheboygan.

The event features various offshore powerboat racing classes and includes the UIM Class 1 World Championship and the F1 Powerboat Championship, along with the new AquaX Jet Ski races.

Things kickoff with a Downtown Block Party at 6 PM on Friday, with powerboats and watercraft on display along with a variety of food and drink options as well as live music.

Over 50 race teams will be setting up at South Pier on Saturday and Sunday getting ready for racing, which will take place on a six-mile course stretching from the marina southward to King Park and Lakeshore drive.

Alcohol possession and consumption is prohibited on any beach area in the city, though there will be a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area district on South Pier and at King Park. The Family-Friendly event offers free admission, live music, food and drink vendors, and convenient parking.

Various viewing areas are available along the lakefront, including King Park and South Beach, with the P1 Fan Zone at the end of South Pier Drive.


 
Pit areas near Deland Park open for viewing at 10 a.m. Aug. 8, followed by speed boat testing from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Race events kick off Aug. 9.

Aug. 9, the jet ski races will take place behind Blue Harbor from 8 to 10 a.m. and then again from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Offshore powerboat racing will take place on the 6-mile course from 10:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The schedule Aug. 10 will follow a similar pattern: jet ski races from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 4:45 p.m. and powerboat racing in the middle again from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. An awards ceremony will be near the main stage on the South Pier lawn at 5:30 p.m.

Several festivities will be hosted throughout the weekend, including the following:

  • A block party at City Green from 6 to 10 p.m. Aug. 8. Attendees can view powerboats, listen to music from artist Andy Velo, and enjoy food trucks and drink concessions.
  • The Sheboygan Yacht Club, 214 Pennsylvania Ave., will host a brat fry and offer concessions from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 9. Our House will perform from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • The city will team up with 3 Sheeps Brewing to host Boats, Bites N’ Brews at King Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 9 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug 10. Live music, vendors and beer will be featured. Miesfeld’s Triangle Market will grill brats and burgers during a brat fry, too.
  • 4th Street Tap, 520 N. Fourth St., will host a shrimp boil from noon to 11 p.m. Aug. 9. Drinks and live music will also be included.
  • Blue Harbor Resort, 725 Blue Harbor Drive, will offer drinks at various areas near the resort, including the Sand Bar Pool Bar outside from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10, and a Bloody Mary Bar at the On the Rocks Bar inside 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. A Good Boy Vodka Bar will be in the parking lot from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 10.
