The year would definitely confirm the model.

Some of the older Cigs had the HIN number in two different places. If not on the transom, on the side from what I recall.

I'm still waiting for photos and numbers but I have found some information that could be of interest here.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 70's after Don Aronow had retired from racing, he took his 32 foot boat Cigarette[I] and stretched it to 36..it was over 9 feet wide. This boat was then stretched to a 40 footer.

He had an idea that a narrower boat would be faster, so he designed a 35 foot boat with a 8 foot beam.

He made two models with the same hull. One with a raised deck he called Awesome and one with a flat deck he called Mistress. The boat was actually 35 feet 9 inches. He often said it was the best boat he ever designed, it had just the right balance.

Later in the 70's everyone wanted bigger boats, so he reluctantly stretched it to 37 feet and 6 inches and thus was born the Top Gun.

He still said the 35 was a better boat.
    -----------------
    AND
    -----------------

The name Awesome comes from the response that Richie Powers gave to Don after coming back from the ocean test of one of the new 35 foot designs.

The first 35 went to Bob Nordskog and he never really set it up right...he was looking for all out speed rather than an all around fast boat that could handle the ocean too.

Finally Richie Powers set one up as the 35 Dry Martini race boat and took it out for the ocean test. Don was waiting for his reaction to the test and the first thing Richie said when he returned to NE 188th St was.....Awesome.

Don grinned and used the name for this production model boat with the high lift deck.

The other 35 with the flat deck, was known as the Mistress.....the ad read..."Every man should have one"

Thanks Raticle, The second link had some good photos, just what I was looking for. The guy I have been talking with is having trouble sending photos and he say's that he can't find any numbers. He has said that the engines have had water entry (doesn't explain how) but looking at my photos, they look like they are more modern engines and it looks, to me, like they are further back in the engine bay, maybe without box's.

SO it looks like It could be a shell and a couple of drives + engine parts. What kind of value would that have?

If you take a look at the one ad, they were asking 39,900 and at the end they were asking 18,000. If it's not in running condition, I'm thinking maybe 10,000. But some others may have a better opinion.

The second place to find a HIN on an old Cig was under the rubrail, 6' aft of the bow.

    Thanks Ratickle,

I believe they also put the HIN under the trim tab.

Had a bit more information also, apparently one engine had water in it because of something to do with the exhaust and is locked up, the other simply hasn't been run for 4 years.

Will update when I know more.

    Thanks again

Photos arrived.... I think this confirms what it is.

Would anyone care to put a value on it? One engine is dead and the other has not run for over 4 years.

    All photos here.

Man, tough to put a value on. Is the boat in Spain?

The first thing you absolutely have to know is the condition of the wood in the stringers and transom.
Those engines are newer than the boat. Did they say what they are?
    No trailer?

Looking at the photos, they are 454 magnums.

No trailer and yes, boat is in Spain.

If it's worth a visit stringers and transom would be the first things I would be interested in, for sure.

I think you'd have to back into a value on something like this. The others should be able to put input for it.

For example (only), completely done, in decent shape, worth $25,000
    Rebuild engines - minus $12,000
    Repair upholstery - minus $1,000
    Repair drives - minus $5,000
Detail, (Repaint Deck?) - minus $2,000

So, something like that. Brainstorm what it's worth, and what you think things would cost to get it to that condition. Then, how much are you willing to lose for the "Cool" factor?

I would also be very careful of the fuel tank. The older aluminum tanks are having issues with the new ethanol fuels.

    Very good comments Ratickle.

Are the tanks easy to get to on these? Would this be something that I could check without stripping out?

Obviously I am trying to find out as much as possible, before I start booking flights to go and see it.
It looks very original to me and unless it's very clever photography, it's in good condition, for it's age.

To be honest, the idea of bringing a boat like this back to life, feels good. I guess there are many of these in circulation but another (original) one can't hurt.

    Please keep the ideas coming.

    Pete

My guess is that Lohring Miller on here has a really good idea on the restoration of a 35 Cig. He was a major part of Dry Martini's restoration. The other will be Charlie of course. I'll see if they've been paying attention to this thread. Probably not or they would have chimed in by now.
