Thank you! Nikon D80 with 500MM lense. After being away from photography for 25 years, I decided to give it another try. Still in the learning process.

No, I just got the camera a couple weeks ago and forgot to order filters. What is the best filter to use, shooting offshore races? Thanks again.

Purrfection - Nice pics. Best to just use a UV filter on the end. I use one on all my lenses and thats the only one I use. Shooting from a helo all the time you dont have time to play around with a polarizer and in all honesty I like the old "what you see is what I saw" type of pics.
D80 is a good camera, I am a Canon guy myself and go everywhere with two EOS 1DS MK 3s. Great cameras but going down the Nikon route is also a good option.
Have fun shooting.

Ned, thank you for the compliment. I have seen many of your shots and you are one of the best out there. When are you coming back to the states? Thank you for the advice on the filters.

A circular polarizer can come in handy if your stuck shooting into bright sun (Like Biloxi). I used mine most of the time there.

Thanks to all for the advice on the filters. After seeing Swedes photos, along with some of the other professionals, I'm almost embarrassed to post mine.

Swede and Ned got skills but don't cut yourself short. You got some nice, clean shots...

04-06-2009 06:09 AMThe only time I take my polarizer off is when I'm shooting at night, or if it's a cloudy day. It's nice to have some control over the reflections, plus it makes the sky a little more blue.
Biloxi was a bear... especially late in the day. Shooting directly into the sun as they came down the straight.Last edited by jayboat; 04-06-2009 at 06:12 AM.

Thanks for the advice, Jay. I'm still learning and can use all the help I can get. I use to shoot drag racing and the glare off the water in offshore, does indeed create some challenges.
