    Lake Cumberland News April 22

    JAMESTOWN, Ky. -- Lake Cumberland will be the site for the best in speed boat racing as the first ever Offshore Super Series Powerboat Racing Association makes its Kentucky debut with the Lake Cumberland Grand Prix , May 15-17, at Halcomb's Landing at Wolf Creek Dam.

    The fun lasts all weekend long with spectacular parties, great local entertainment, and autograph sessions with the drivers, not to mention the best in offshore racing with over 30 boats roaring by at speeds exceeding 150 miles per hour.

    "This will be a great opportunity to showcase Lake Cumberland," said Gov. Steve Beshear. "We hope this becomes an annual event and will tell the country what a great asset we have in Lake Cumberland."

    Offshore Super Series (OSS) boat racing features speeds of nearly 200 mph, boats flying through the air in choppy water and helicopters soaring overhead carrying camera crews and rescue teams. The six-mile course will feature seven turns. The qualifying runs will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 16 (Central time) with racing continuing that afternoon, including heat races and a pro-am race for locals who think they have what it takes to compete. Several classes race on Sunday, beginning at 11:30 a.m., with a concluding awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

    Racing teams and their boats will start arriving on Thursday, May 14. Race Village will come alive on Friday as teams prepare to test their skill on the race course. On Saturday, there will be test runs, heat races and two class races. The final races will run on Sunday, with the sought after trophy presentation at 6:30 p.m.

    Halcomb's Landing near the Wolf Creek Dam, just south of Jamestown, will be the headquarters for the event, providing great views of the lake and the races, which will be covered by Fox Sports Network and Performance Boats Magazine.

    With an admission ticket to Race Village, spectators can see the boats up close and meet the drivers, their throttle men and teams. They can ask for an autograph, have their kids sit in the boats and pose for pictures and check out various vendors and merchandise. Attendees will also want to watch as these 13,000 pound crafts are loaded into the water with 100-ton cranes.

    Race Village will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Autograph sessions will be held at the Village when the boats are not racing. Tickets to the Village are $10 a day for adults and $5 a day for children ages 7-12. (Children under 7 are free.)

    This OSS event is supported by the Kentucky Sports Authority, an agency of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet.

    Hello OSS Racers,

    I can't tell you how excited the people in Kentucky are to have us racing in Lake Cumberland next weekend. The whole state is buzzing with excitement. Don't be surprised if you see bigger crowds here than any other boat race you've ever attended. From the Friday night opening ceremony to the awards on Sunday night, the folks in Cumberland have something special planned for us.

    Remembering Big John

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The entire OSS family is grieving over the loss of John Begovich. He was someone that we all looked up to and enjoyed his company and enthusiasm for the sport that we all love so much
    John will be greatly missed but he'll always be with us in spirit. For this reason, the Lake Cumberland Race will be Dedicated to the Memory of John Begovich. May he rest in peace.
    What you need to know before leaving for Lake Cumberland
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Hello Race Teams,

    Now that its time to head to Lake Cumberland for the second stop on the OSS tour, there's a few things you need to keep in mind.

    TIME. You will be constantly crossing this line - (The locals call it slow time and fast time). All race schedule times are in Central Standard - Slow time.

    Booze - Bring your own and plenty of it. Also bring plenty of plastic cups. You can't have a beer can or bottle in your hand, but cups filled with your favorite beverage are fine.

    GPS - A GPS is HIGHLY recommended to find your way from the airport to Lake Cumberland. Aim for the Wolf Creek Dam on Rt 127. The Race Village is ½ mile before the dam and registration is in the Fish Hatchery building on the back side of the dam.
    Use this address in your GPS. This will take you to State Dock.
    6365 State Park Rd Jamestown, KY 42629. The Race Village is 4 miles past State Dock on Rt 127.

    State Dock Park - Five mile road to Lure Lodge and Houseboats. There's 52 turns on this 5 mile road. Be careful as some turns are tight. Lure Lodge and Houseboats are both at the end of the State Dock Park road.

    Thurs night. If you get in early, come to the party at Grider Hill for the pig roast!!!

    Friday night. Big party in the Race Village including a Beauty pageant and racer introductions.

    Race Village is really tight. Only haulers and scooters/golf carts will be allowed in race village. Everything else can be parked on the back side of the dam or in the adjoining camp ground. This camp ground is behind the dam. Transportation is available to race village. http://www.campgroundsrvparks.com/ke...snack-bar/6904

    Saturday night. Get ready for a party unlike any other. Sit on the front porch of your houseboat and enjoy the cranking country tunes of Halfway to Hazard this is a touring band from Nashville. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvR9emzCXLc

    Bring your Cowboy boots and plan on having some fun.

    Have a safe trip. If you need to rent a vehicle, send an email to John Brunner at jbrunner@offshoresuperseries.com and he can get you some excellent rates from Enterprise.
