TUCKERTON — Two men were hospitalized Sunday after a boat flipped during the Jersey Outlaw Racing Association's championship off Tuckerton Beach, according to a race organizer.

A boat named "Last Minute" flipped over in the first set of races and injured a pilot and copilot, organizer Paul J. Hulse told The Press. Hulse did not release their names, citing respect for their privacy.

Both were taken by medevac helicopter to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, he said.

According to Hulse, a family member of one of the racers said they are in good spirits, but would be held in the hospital overnight.

Jersey Outlaw Racing Association is devoted to racing garveys, a type of flat-bottom boat built for shallow waters typically found throughout Barnegat Bay. Garvey enthusiasts say racing dates back to the mid-1930s.
