Organizers have canceled plans for nationally sanctioned powerboat races this weekend.

The National Boat Racing Association/Outboard Drivers Association have taken place at Lake Jacksonville for the five previous years. But with the threat of strong thunderstorms resulting from the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon, the decision was made Wednesday to call it off.

The storm system is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by the time it reaches Illinois this weekend, but could dump 2 to 6 inches of rain across the state.

Organizers are considering whether to reschedule the races.

The event typically draws boat racers from about 12 states to compete in different classes.
