Construction for 2017 Miami Boat Show well underway
    By Brianna Liestman

Construction for the 2017 Miami International Boat Show began on Dec. 1 and is on its way to building a record-breaking show. MIBS will run from Feb. 16-20, 2017 at the Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin at Key Biscayne.

The show is prepared to host its expected 100,000 or more attendees in mid-February. Many improvements have been made to this year’s show to handle an even larger capacity of attendance.
“I do think this year is going to be certainly one of the biggest shows in the world, based on the new location. I think this is probably the best boat show location in the world so I do expect to see attendance grow,” said NMMA President Thom Dammrich.

Every year, MIBS crews build 600,000 square feet of clear span tents for the show. Three of the six large tent shells are already up and crews began building the marina over a week ago. The head dock, which is 90 feet short of a third of a mile, has been installed.

“Last year, the marina that we built for the show was the largest temporary marina ever built in the world, and it was the second-largest marina in the state of Florida while it was in existence. And this year, it’s going to be bigger,” said Dammrich. The marina itself will be 35 percent larger and “we’re adding about 40 percent more boats to the water.”

The new marina will allow the show to add more large yachts, with over 100 yachts scheduled to be in the basin this year, including the Biscayne Lady, which will be the home of the VIP Lounge. This lounge will offer air conditioning, private restrooms and a top deck with views of downtown Miami.

“It’s going to be a spectacular new VIP experience on the water,” Dammrich said.

On land, last year’s show was three-fourths of a mile long and the show will be cutting that length down to end just beyond the water taxi dropoff.

“There will still be a very large, 600,000-square-foot footprint on land, but it will be more compact for the visitors,” said Dammrich.

The water taxi capacity will be significantly increased in 2017. In total, there will be 47 percent more water taxis with larger taxis and more frequent service.

“Last year, we transported 52,000 people by water taxi. This year, we have capacity to transfer 125,000 people,” said Dammrich. “We don’t expect the big delays with the water taxis this year that we had last year.”

These numbers equate a one-way trip as one person, so figuring each attendee will take a round trip, this equates to 62,5000 attendees, or two-thirds of the expected attendance.

Other improvements to the 2017 show, which have come directly from feedback by past attendees, include a new bus transportation system, which Dammrich said will bring higher quality to the management of the bus operation. The city will also be paving the path along the front of the show and causeway, which was uneven to walk on last year and will make it easier for attendees to walk from parking areas. LED lighting is being added in the tents, which will have 35 percent more lumens.

“Manufacturers may still want to bring in some of their own lighting to light their boats and displays, but the lighting in the tents should be much better this year,” said Dammrich.

A new cleaning service has been hired for the restroom and the show will be providing 30 percent more restroom facilities, with most located in the center core of the show and big helium balloons hanging over each facility for easy spotting. Great Performances*has also been hired as the new food service company for the show, with major food service facilities placed in six different locations throughout the show.

“They’re going to bring much higher level quality of food and service to the whole food service operation,” said Dammrich.

Name & Date Change for Miami Boat Show Innovation Breakfast

Inventions and improvements are the heart of the marine industry. That’s why the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is re-branding its ‘All Industry Breakfast’ at the Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show to the ‘Innovation Breakfast’. The name change celebrates the thousands of innovative products, ideas and services displayed during the Show each year. As part of the re-branding, the annual breakfast, traditionally held on opening day of the Miami Show, will move to the second day or February 17, 2017, and will re-locate to the show’s expansive new Center Courtyard area at Miami Marine Stadium.
“The new Innovation Breakfast provides a better platform and opportunity to showcase and honor the thousands of new and innovative marine products, services, and ideas introduced at the show each year,” says Ben Wold, executive vice president of NMMA and show manager. “And the Miami International Boat Show’s move to Miami Marine Stadium Park provides an idyllic, historic boating location to showcase the advancements in our industry.”

To purchase tickets to the breakfast, contact NMMA’s Venus Berryman at

Next Level Luxury at the Miami International Boat Show 2017
    By Lauren Jade Hill

Recognized as one of the largest yachting exhibitions in the world, the Miami International Boat Show is a firm favorite of the yachting world event calendar. And now promising more luxury yachts and VIP experiences than ever before, the 2017 edition is set to be even better.

Taking place from February 16 to 20 at Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin, the event will bring yachting enthusiasts together over President’s Day weekend. The focus this year is on catering for the increasing demand for large yachts, with the greatly anticipated addition of a new VIP experience.

A luxury lounge will be central to the new VIP space, which as well as providing upscale dining, evening drinks and live music, will be located on board a 111-foot yacht amid the boats and yachts that are on display at the show. VIP guests can take in the atmosphere of the show from the yacht’s open-air sky deck, enjoy a complimentary massage, or network in the VIP lounge’s on-board bars.

Sea trials, power boating and sailing lessons through Discover Boating Hands-On Skills will all immerse the show’s guests in the excitement of each day, with access to Strictly Sailing Miami at Miamarina at Bayside where around 130 sailboats, a number of catamarans, and the latest sailing gear will be on display. Free water taxis and shuttle buses will transport the show’s ticket holders between the two venues throughout the day.

What’s more, the Miami Boat Show will be set in what’s considered to be one of the city’s most picturesque water-front locations, with a deep water basin that makes it ideal for yachts, and with views over the water of downtown Miami. But of course it’s the boats people primarily come here for, and with more than 1,300 new boats, of which 100 will be luxury yachts, even the highest of expectations will be met. Expect to see appearances by Tiara, Prestige, Riviera and SeaRay, among the vast array of prestigious brands on show.

Scout Boats will debut 38-footer in Miami
    Posted on January 16th, 2017

Scout said the 380 LXF is built on its epoxy-infused, double-stepped fuel-efficient hull.

Scout Boats said today that it will unveil its 380 LXF, the company’s newest luxury sportfishing addition to its LXF model line, at the Feb. 16-20 Miami International Boat Show.

The builder said the model will debut with a Yamaha triple 350 hp-rigged model in the Scout booth (in-water slip No. 450) and another Mercury quad 300 hp-rigged model in the Mercury booth (in-water slip No. 218). The quad-Merc model will be available for demonstration.

Scout said its LXF collection is composed of luxury sportfish models that showcase a unique blending of high-performance fish boats with high-end cruisers. The cross between these two popular recreational marine mainstays allows owners to enjoy amenities on this collection normally only found on much larger sportfishers.

The company said the 380 LXF is the seventh model in the category, joining the 255, 275, 300, 320, 350 & 420 LXF.

Scout said the 380 is built on its epoxy-infused, double-stepped fuel-efficient hull. Epoxy infusion provides more stability in the hull while reducing overall weight in the boat, countering the long-term industry belief that a larger boat must be heavy to perform, the company said.

The length overall is 38 feet, 6 inches, and the beam sits at a stable 12 feet, 1 inch.

“One of the things that clearly separates our models from our competition is fit and finish,” Scout CEO and owner Steve Potts said in a statement.

“Our 380 carries this principle forward again with completely-finished doors, lids, hatches, bilges … we’re not just screwing a cheap seat cover to a lid and calling it a day. We’ve chosen premium upgraded upholsteries, taken the time to finish the boat inside and out, packed it with incredible innovations and put it all on a high-performance hull.”

The company said the boat’s perks include an optional hydraulic port side beach platform with synthetic teak — ideal for boarding and deboarding safely away from the transom and engines — and the standard two Garmin 7616 touch screens at the helm (available for upgrade to three screens).

From the helm and the key fob, the owner can control features throughout the model with the help of C-Zone digital switching technology. There’s also an optional Seakeeper gyrostabilizer, an electronically actuated SureShade integrated retractable aft awning and Scout’s optional patented electronically actuated articulating rocket launchers.

“We want the customer to feel that ‘wow factor’ when they look at our models, when they touch something on the model, when they captain the model and everything in between,” Potts said. “Much like the 420 LXF, as well as the other models in our series, this is like no other boat in its class.”

Sea Tow Foundation providing life jacket loaner stands at MIBS
    January 19, 2017
    By Sea Tow Foundation

For the first time, six life jacket loaner stands with 400 life jackets will be available to individuals and families attending the*Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show Feb. 16-20 on Virginia Key at Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin.

Through a partnership between the National Marine Manufacturers Association – the organizers of the Miami Boat Show – Onyx Outdoor, and the Sea Tow Foundation, life jackets will be available for children and adults visiting the show to borrow, use and return as they explore the boats and yachts docked at the show’s marina. Each of the six life jacket loaner stands holds life jackets in sizes infant to adult. Onyx Outdoors has donated all of the life jackets.

The initiative is part of the foundation’s national Life Jacket Loaner program, which has more than 340 life jacket stands and has made over 35,600 life jackets available across the United States, where boaters can borrow a life jacket for free.

“Proper life jacket use and boater safety education are something NMMA takes seriously. Partnering with Sea Tow to have its life jacket loaner stands available at our Miami show help ensure we carry these important messages directly to the boater,” said Ben Wold, executive vice present of NMMA. “Not only are the life jacket loaner stands a safety resource for attendees browsing the docks but they are an*excellent educational tool, reminding boaters that a life jacket is something that should always be available when needed.”

The Sea Tow Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization created by Captain Joe Frohnhoefer, the founder of Sea Tow. The foundation’s mission is to promote safe boating practices, such as the use of life jackets and to designate a sober skipper.

“Having our life jacket loaner stands at the Miami International Boat Show is a way to inform the public about the importance of wearing life jackets, while also providing safety during the boat show,” said Sea Tow Foundation Executive Director Michael Wesolowski. “Anyone wanting that extra security, including infants and children, can find a life jacket that fits, then return it for someone else to use.”

The Sea Tow Foundation and NMMA are searching for volunteers who will ensure stands are stocked with jackets and help fit attendees with life jackets during the show. Each volunteer receives free admission to the show and the opportunity to explore after his or her volunteer shift is completed.

NMMA announces agenda and sponsors for Miami International Boat Show Innovation Breakfast
    January 23, 2017, By NMMA

NMMA announced the agenda for its innovation breakfast at the Miami International Boat Show. The breakfast is being held Friday, Feb. 17 within the show’s exciting newly expanded Center Courtyard. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. and the breakfast runs from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. NMMA is also proud to share the news that the breakfast is being presented by the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation with support from Dominion Marine Media and Enterprise Florida.

Celebrating the thousands of innovative products, ideas and services showcased during the Miami Boat Show each year, the Innovation Breakfast will feature a host of presentations focused on propelling our industry forward through innovation including:
•Special opening remarks from Thom Dammrich, president of the NMMA.
•The presentation of the CSI Awards, recognizing marine dealers that excel in customer satisfaction.
•Frank Peterson, president of the RBFF will address how the Foundation is innovating its way to increased boating and fishing participation. Innovation and adaptation are essential in the pursuit of progress; and both of these concepts are at the center of the RBFF’s path to realizing its new aspirational goal of reaching a participation level of 60 million anglers in 60 months. Hear firsthand why and how this critical effort can make a difference in our industry.
•Marine Marketers of America will present their Neptune Awards recognizing excellence in marine marketing communications.
•Dominion Marine Media’s newly appointed CEO will unveil the company’s new name and share his vision for creating a world-class boat-shopping experience.
•NMMA will present the Alan J. Freedman Memorial Leadership Award, honoring groups or individuals in the marine industry who’ve made outstanding contributions to boating.
    •Special presentation from Enterprise Florida.
•Capping off the Breakfast will be the Miami International Boat Show Innovation Awards, the recreational boating industry’s highest honor for innovative and technological achievement, judged by Boating Writers International.

“The Miami International Boat Show brings together the best boats and engines, the best marine accessories and the best of boating from around the globe. An estimated $3 billion in marine products can be found at this year’s show and it’s no surprise that creativity and intelligent design are at the center of what you’ll find,” said the NMMA in a statement. “We’re celebrating that with the Innovation Breakfast and elevating it by putting it center stage so to speak — relocating the breakfast to the expanded Center Courtyard area of the show, enhancing the experience with new breakfast foods, and providing an agenda focused on the innovative efforts leading our industry into the future.”

Tickets to the breakfast are available for purchase and are expected to sell out quickly.

Because doors to the breakfast open at 7:30 a.m. and the breakfast begins at 8 a.m. – before the show officially opens – exhibitors planning to attend the breakfast must park in Lot A, take a taxi/Uber to Lot C, or valet park, as all other parking lots and transportation will not be running until 9 a.m.

For questions about the Innovation Awards, contact Rachel Timko at rtimko@nmma.org. For questions about the breakfast, contact Ellen Hopkins at ehopkins@nmma.org.

Miami International Boat Show spawns waterborne transit push
    Written by John Charles Robbins

Success of the 2016 Miami International Boat Show in carrying more than 50,000 attendees by water taxis, coupled with continued City of Miami pressure, helped motivate county officials to begin planning waterborne transportation to alleviate road traffic.

Use of water taxis was a panel discussion topic at “The Waterfront,” a Jan. 18 program by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.

“We have an amazing waterfront,” said Irene S. Hegedus, chief of transportation enhancements for Miami-Dade County, “but we’re not using it for transportation purposes.”

The success of the water taxi system used during the 2016 boat show made it clear that people would be willing to use waterborne transportation, she said.

Ms. Hegedus talked about the county’s aim to soon use water transportation routes.

While much work needs to be done before waterborne transportation is a routine here, the county is working on a plan with two components: a commuter service that would be an extension of the existing Metrorail, Metromover and Metrobus system running on fixed routes and schedules; and an on-demand service, perhaps using private water taxis.

She said the county is working with the state Department of Environmental Resources Management on potential stops along Biscayne Bay and the Miami River for vessels.

The 2016 boat show was held for the first time at the Marine Stadium Park and Basin on Virginia Key, a city-owned site.

Of the more than 100,000 people who came to the show in February, 53,000 arrived in a fleet of water taxis lined up by the organizer, the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

It was telling that hundreds of people were willing to wait in long lines to be taken to Virginia Key over the water instead of on available shuttle buses, said Spencer Crowley, who moderated the panel discussion.

The chamber program invited Ben Wold, boat show manager, to discuss the new venue.

Mr. Crowley said the boat show moving to Virginia Key was a little controversial, yet it seemed like a very good idea to put to use a waterfront property that for the most part has been dormant for years.

The money the city gains from licensing the site for the boat show can be spent on improvements to Virginia Key, he said.

Of the boat show organizers, Mr. Crowley said, “They’re pioneering water taxis.”

“The city needs to reconnect with the waterfront,” he said. “It was a great show and the water taxis were really a great thing.”

In his opening remarks, Mr. Wold reminded everyone that “it’s boat show time,” as the show is to unfold Feb. 16-20. “We’re really looking forward to our second year at our new location,” he said.

Mr. Wold said the new venue can’t be beat, with its one-of-a-kind panoramic view of Biscayne Bay and the backdrop of Miami Marine Stadium, which is scheduled for restoration.

“It’s a showcase to the world,” he said.

“Our exhibitors said it was the best show ever,” Mr. Wold said of the 2016 event. Exhibitors saw sales increase 20% to 400%, he said.

The success of the water taxis was a pleasant surprise, he said. Organizers were hoping to transport about 25,000 on water taxis and were very happy when the total topped 50,000 people.

“We couldn’t keep up with them,” he said.

The 2017 boat show will offer increased and streamlined water taxi service, doubling capacity to 125,000, he said.

Mr. Wold spoke of the significant economic impact of the show, which celebrates its 76th year this year.

He said the boat show is a global destination that puts boating and Miami on an international stage, supporting 6,592 full-time jobs and 55,000 jobs in Florida. Visitors from 35 countries make their way to the show each year.

The show generates nearly $600 million in economic impact annually, Mr. Wold said.

The show also translates to 200,000 hotel room nights, he said. About 33% of exhibitors are based in South Florida.

The organizers thought attendance might drop in 2016 with a switch in locations, but instead the event attracted 100,279 people, 4% more than 2015, he said.

For the 2017 show, organizers have lined up 10 partner hotels, five shuttle bus routes and four water taxi stops, Mr. Wold said.

There are to be 10,000 parking spaces downtown and 4,000 on Virginia Key, plus a direct mini-shuttle from Virginia Key parking lots to the show tents and waterfront docks.

The show will have dedicated Uber and taxi drop-off areas, new food and beverage partner Great Performances, VIP boating experiences and a 35% increase in in-water boat displays.

Mr. Crowley said, “It’s great to see the show growing.”

Miami Boat Show: Planning Your Visit
    Debbie Hanson

Planning to attend the Miami Boat Show this year? If not, now is the time to reconsider. If so, and you already have the Miami boat show dates from February 16th through February 20th marked off on your calendar, you are far from alone. Strong consumer confidence and low interest rates have plenty of people ready to launch into the world of recreational boating.

In fact, according to a recent quote from Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), “Economic indicators are working in the industry’s favor—a continuously improving housing market, strong consumer confidence, growing disposable income and consumer spending, and low interest rates all contribute to a healthy recreational boating market. Looking ahead, 2017 is likely to bring new dollar and unit sales gains on par with or better than 2016, and this trend will likely continue through 2018.”

Now that you know why more people are getting on board with the boating lifestyle, you might be interested in a few handy tips that can help you start planning your visit to the Miami Boat Show this year.

    • Are you a member of a boat owner's club? Before you buy your tickets for this year, check to see if your boat owner's club offers a discount on tickets.

    • Attend on a weekday if possible to avoid the weekend crowds. The first day of the show, Premier Day, is Thursday, February 16th and the boat show hours are from 10 AM to 6 PM. Miami Boat Show dates and hours are Friday, February 17th through Monday, February 20th, hours are from 10 AM to 6 PM daily.

    • Use the park-and-ride options that will take you to and from the offsite parking locations. There are free water taxis and shuttle buses that are available to you, so you can get to the Miami Boat Show by sea or by land. You can also purchase parking tickets in advance in order to get a guaranteed space.

    • If you are in the market for a new boat, do your research on manufacturers and boat prices in advance. This way, when you get to the show and are presented with special boat show pricing, you are informed. Otherwise, you are likely to miss out on a good buying opportunity.

    • Don't try to do the entire show all in one day. There will be over 1,300 boats to check out this year -- including 565 boats in-water and more than 100 yachts. Given the fact that show personnel is expecting more than 100,000 attendees, and there are over 1,000 exhibitors, give yourself plenty of time.

    • Dare to dream. Have you always wondered what it would be like to lounge in a luxurious master stateroom or get behind the helm of one of the best fishing boats for offshore trips? This is your opportunity because the Miami Boat Show is the place to do it.

Now you're prepared for the next time someone asks you, "Exactly when is the Miami Boat Show being held this year?" Plus, you can pass along a few bonus boat show tips. Just don't forget to familiarize with the different types of boats before you go. Use our boat comparison tool so that you know your sport fishing boats from your deck boats. Your time spent at any boat show will be much more productive with a little advance planning.

Mercedes-AMG GT R inspires Cigarette Racing powerboat

The high-performance boat will have AMG green hell magno accents, just like the car.

Mercedes and Cigarette Racing have decided the best way to celebrate 10 years of partnership would be to come out with another high-performance boat inspired by a road car wearing the three-pointed star logo. This time around, it’s the mighty GT R serving as foundation for a powerboat styled in collaboration with Gorden Wagener, none other than Daimler’s chief designer. For now we only have a teaser of the boat, but already we can see the boat’s AMG green hell magno accents in the same vein as the GT R’s signature color.

It follows last year’s tie-up between the two, which led to the creation of a special boat derived from Mercedes-AMG’s GT3 race car and dubbed 41' SD GT3. A year before, the GT S influenced the design of Cigarette Racing’s 50 Marauder GT S, while in 2014 the two collaborated to develop the 50’ Cigarette Marauder as a nod to the stunning Vision Gran Turismo concept.

If you would rather have the car, the R sits on top of the Mercedes-AMG GT’s range and kicks off at a steep €165,410 on its home turf in Germany. It’s available exclusively as a coupe now, but the peeps from Affalterbach*have admitted a roadster version might join the family at some point in the future. Even if approved, don’t expect to see it sooner than next year.

Cigarette Racing’s latest high-performance boat will celebrate its premiere next Wednesday at the 2017 Miami International Auto Show in Florida.

If the two are going to join forces yet again next year, perhaps the source of inspiration for the next project should be the forthcoming F1-engined*Project One hypercar scheduled to be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

7News gets preview of Miami International Boat Show
    Andrew Scheinthal

MIAMI (WSVN) - One of South Florida’s biggest events is getting ready to set sail, and 7News was granted a special preview of what’s to come.

Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado is ready to kick off one of the city’s largest events.

“We have the best venue for the best boat show in the world,” said Regalado.

The waters off Miami’s coast will come alive next weekend when million dollar yachts sail into Virginia Key for the Miami International Boat show, now at the Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin for its second year.

“Sailors from around the world have come to Miami to go the show,” said Kevin Murphy of Sail Miami.

A special dock was built for the show outside the marine stadium. It’s made up of more than three miles of piers and tens of thousands of feet of cable.

Once the show is over, the entire structure will be broken down in just a matter of days.

“It all goes out, and we store the docks here on Virginia Key,” said show manager Ben Wold.

This year, there are more parking spots to accommodate the growing crowd. There are also water taxis that can transport up to 15,000 people a day, nearly double than that of 2016.

The event brings in money as big as the boats themselves. “The economic impact of the Miami Boat show is $600 million every year,” said Wold. “It’s the equivalent of two Super Bowls, and it’s here every year.”

More than $3 billion worth of boats, equipment and other merchandise will fill the venue.

There will also be plenty of food for visitors to enjoy.

The show appears to be a tradition that keeps growing year after year. “People love the show. It’s 76 years old — it’s a Miami tradition,” Wold said.

Miami Boat Show will have a Treasure Coast flair
    Ed Killer

For the second consecutive year, the Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show will dock alongside*the legendary Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin.

The new venue on the Rickenbacker Causeway at Virginia Key offers much more in-water display space for the show's powerboats than the Miami Beach Convention Center did, and it gives exhibitors a wide range of on-the-water options for connecting people to the boating lifestyle.

Among the 1,100 exhibitors and 1,300 vessels on display, the Treasure Coast marine industry will have great representation. Maverick Boat Group, Pursuit Boats, Bluewater Boats, Hurricane Boat Lifts, Armstrong Nautical Products and Twin Vee Boats, all with ties to the Treasure Coast, will be among those entertaining potential clients along the docks and in the tents at the show. Each will debut new products and will have upgrades to last year's models and, like many exhibitors, will be offerings discounts, add-ons and deals during the boat show.

For example, Maverick Boat Group — Fort Pierce builders of the Maverick, Hewes, Pathfinder and Cobia boat lines —*will debut the*Cobia 280*Dual Console, a new offering*built on Cobia's top-selling 28-foot hull and the 15th Cobia model Maverick has designed since acquiring the brand in 2005.

"Like all the new Cobias, the 280 Dual Console is a balance of the fishing features every serious angler*needs and the comforts the family wants," said Maverick president Scott Deal, of Vero Beach. The new boat offers a wide array of comfortable seating options to accommodate 12 passengers, various dining setups, a number of single or twin Yamaha Outboards with electronic control options, Corian countertops, 12-volt refrigerator, grill, AC shore power and much more.

For Maverick Boat Group, the Miami Boat Show has been its best exhibition for the past three years where the company typically sells its most units in one weekend.

Pursuit Boats, with its factory in Fort Pierce merely two blocks away from Maverick, also will*debut a new model — the S 328 Sport. The well-appointed offering presents the buyer with the dual use of fishing excellence or cruising comfort, along with a two-person berth for overnight stays*at anchor or in a marina. The aft cockpit, for example, allows for serious offshore fishing, but foldaway fore and aft seats quickly convert the cockpit into a social area when the fishing is over and the cocktail party begins.

Bluewater Sportfishing Boats, just*around the corner from Maverick in Fort Pierce, will have several of its 10 models in its display. The Bluewater 2150 is another of the class of boats that is built for versatility and fun whether fishing or heading to the sand bar on a weekend afternoon.

The Miami Boat Show is only one of three specialized boat shows taking place in Miami this weekend. Sailboat enthusiasts will find the Strictly Sail Miami taking place at Miamarina at Bayside Marketplace on Biscayne Boulevard next to the AmericanAirlines Arena.

Also, along Collins Avenue on South Beach, between 41st and 54th streets and across from the Eden Roc and Fountainebleau hotels, is the newly branded Yachts Miami Beach. It's the 29th annual run for the in-water show featuring*some of the most luxurious, uniquely designed and extraordinary new and pre-owned yachts and superyachts from the premier builders in the world.

Mack Sails*of Stuart, will be at Strictly Sail's Booth 1024. At Yachts Miami Beach, United Yacht Sales of Stuart, Hinckley Marine from of Stuart and Dragonfly Boatworks of Vero Beach all will display their offerings.
Mark Castlow, of Dragonfly Boatworks, said orienting his technical poling skiffs, paddleboards and custom-designed flats boats with customers who are comfortable in the large yacht market has worked well the past few years.

"Our*Dragonfly 17 Classic, for instance, is the perfect yacht tender for some of these boats," Castlow said. "We even build them with stainless steel eye hooks anchored into the stringers to give the yacht owners lifting points to attach our boat to cranes putting them on decks."

There also will be a full complement of seminars, hands-on on-the-water instruction and tools for potential buyers available at the show, online and through social media.

All three boat shows will open Thursday and run through Monday.

Miami Boat Show’s Virginia Key encore escapes acrimony of inaugural event

Last year, the run-up to the inaugural Miami International Boat Show on Virginia Key was choppy, to say the least.

While hustling to build a massive grid of piers and an upland campus from scratch, the National Marine Manufacturers Association was also juggling lawsuits and appeals by the neighboring Village of Key Biscayne challenging its city, county and state permits. The two sides engaged in dueling public relations campaigns, and even had competing websites.

This year, though, as the Boat Show returns for its encore performance, it’s been smooth sailing.

The village continues to pursue its litigation, driven primarily by the city of Miami’s efforts to reactivate the area of Virginia Key along the Rickenbacker Causeway, the one way in and out of the village. But the acrimony — once dialed up to 11 — seems to have completely disappeared.

“This is our long-term home,” said Ben Wold, manager of the show, which until last year had been held for decades at the Miami Beach Convention Center. “I think the good news is everyone agrees the Boat Show is an important event that needs to be here.”

That’s mostly true, but not entirely.

Key Biscayne Mayor Mayra Peņa Lindsay continues to hold that the Boat Show is an event that, while vital to the county’s economy, would be better off at a different location. But she admits that steps taken by the show’s organizers and by Miami’s mayor and commission to include Key Biscayne have allayed some of the alarm in the tony village.

For now, the village hopes to work out its issues through conflict resolution with the county, and continues to talk about a potential settlement with the city. But the litigation isn’t over, and Lindsay said she’ll continue to monitor the show for any flareups.

“I really wish the boat show well. We’ve always maintained we as a village support the boat show,” she said. “We just don’t think that’s the optimal home for many reasons.”

Pete Boden caught some great shots of the Skater 478 out running. Bob Teague is at the wheel in this one, with Johnny Tomlison making sure he does nothing wrong. Jason Johnson and Matt Trulio of Speed on the Water are along to catch the commentary.

Later Bob and Johnny switched spots. I haven't got a comment yet on who's the better driver......

Both said the boat was great. They could get it to do nothing wrong and took it up to 122MPH.

    Sea Ray SLX 400

Sea Ray has been steadily cultivating its incredibly good SLX deck boat lineup (check out our First Look Video of the Sea Ray 310 SLX OB, to see what we mean) lately by introducing clever models loaded with lots of smart and innovative features that make them true sport utilities of the sea. Now there’s a new flagship model—the SLX 400—and it takes that sport utility theme to a whole different level. After crawling all over one we’re confident in saying that Sea Ray has just upped the ante in the luxury deck boat market.

The first thing everyone noticed at the boat show display was the aft section of the SLX 400’s topsides, which electrically lowers to create an expanded teak “beach” at the stern—a companion to the huge teak-decked swim platform. When stowed it blends into the natural lines of the boat. Other boat manufacturers have tried to integrate this Transformer-like capability into their boats, but Sea Ray has done it in a way that makes it feel as if it’s a natural extension of the boat—not a feature that’s simply been slapped on.

The deck layout has four distinct social zones with highly convertible seating that can be customized to suit the activity at hand. The bow features touring seats and lounges set around a drop-in table. It can alternatively be converted into a large sunpad. An aft seating area can also be customized via sliding seatbacks. Comfort continues under the huge tower-mounted hardtop. There’s a mini galley with dual grills for preparing meals or snacks, and adjacent dinette seating. The helm station includes Sea Ray’s “Digital Dash” as well as Axius joystick docking controls.

We’re ready to party. Based on our brief time aboard, so is the Sea Ray SLX 400.
