A pretty good article, with photos, about some of the boats at the show from BOATING magazine.

    http://www.boatingmag.com/2017-miami...s-on-display-i

The 2017 Miami Boat Show provided boaters with an opportunity to see some of the most amazing boats up close.

The 2017 Miami International Boat Show was jam-packed with a plethora of new boats. From center consoles to runabouts, watersports and cruisers, there was a craft to fit every style of boating.

While debuts of new boats are always the crowd favorites we also checked out boats that were new just a few months ago in Fort Lauderdale and some classic models that have been refreshed. Honestly, you would need weeks to thoroughly cover all of the boats on display. We only had a few days.

This is by no means a complete list of every boat featured at the 2017 Miami International Boat Show. It is just some of what caught our eye while walking the docks. There’s a second round coming in our Boats on Display II piece so be on the lookout for that, too.

Awards, new products highlight busy 2017 Miami show
    By Jonathan Sweet

Attendance has been up for most boat shows this year as the season has gotten off to a strong start.

While final numbers haven't been released for the 2017 edition of the Miami International Boat Show yet, attendance was up through the early going, and the docks and tents were crowded throughout the show.
Look for more coverage of the show in the March issue of Boating Industry.

In its second year at the Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin, the show doubled its dock space to 3.5 miles of dock while rearranging other exhibit space. Another major change was moving the annual industry breakfast from the opening Thursday to Friday morning and rebranding it as the Innovation Breakfast.

This was also the first year the Marine Industry Customer Satisfaction Index Awards were handed out at the breakfast. The move from IBEX to Miami was designed to give more consumer attention and exposure to those award winners. There were a total of 52 recipients this year.

NMMA and Boating Writers International recognized the annual Innovation Award winners at the breakfast as well. This year’s program evaluated 63 products across 23 categories. The judges chose 19 winners and two honorable mentions in 16 categories.

Also recognized at the breakfast was former Dometic Americas President Frank Marciano, who received the 2017 Alan J. Freedman Memorial Leadership Award, which recognizes individuals who’ve made outstanding contributions to the marine accessories industry through leadership, creativity and personal motivation.

“NMMA congratulates Frank Marciano on his exemplary work in the recreational boating industry and is proud to bestow upon him the Alan J. Freedman Award,” said Thom Dammrich, NMMA president. “Frank’s attention to detail and commitment to marine product excellence and customer service have helped paved the way for marine manufacturing’s growth and innovation.”

The Marine Marketers of America also announced the winners of its 2016 Neptune Awards for Marine Marketing Excellence Friday.

“Marine marketers gave us their best for this year’s highly competitive contest,” said Wanda Kenton Smith, president of MMA. “There was a wonderful variety of submissions and participating companies, from small businesses to global corporations, from in-house marketing teams to boutique and full-service agencies, representing all aspects of the industry.”

MIAMI, FL - February 25, 2017: Honda Marine has given boat owners a glimpse into the future by revealing a stunning concept engine at the 2017 Miami International Boat Show.
Designers at Honda’s Advanced Design Group drew inspiration from the 2017 Acura NSX Supercar for the striking prototype, making it taller, slimmer and more sculpted than current engines. It, like the Acura NSX, also features honeycomb mesh trim and a floating winged blade.
For the Miami reveal, Honda Marine had an Acura NSX on show next to the concept engine, and in the same colour — Nouvelle Blue Pearl — indicating that different colours could be available should the engine go into commercial production.
Will Walton, Assistant Vice President, Honda Marine, said: “The Honda Marine Design Concept Engine is a clear indicator that Honda is committed to the marine business, continuing its legacy of innovation and groundbreaking marine products with a vision of what future Honda Marine power could be.
“The inspiration for the design of this engine was driven by the feeling you get when at the helm of a powerful boat on the water –the rush of excitement, the exhilaration and freedom, the feeling that hits you immediately with the boat at full throttle and the water and air around you.”

Miami attendance up 7 percent in second year at new location

In its second year at Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin, attendance for the 2017 Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show increased 7 percent from 2016, show organizers said Monday.

Attendance for the show, held over the Presidents Day weekend, reached nearly 100,000 attendees, from an estimated 30-35 countries around the globe.

Exhibitors and consumers share their thoughts in this short video recapping the 2017 Miami International Boat Show.

“With learnings from our inaugural event at Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin last year, the 2017 edition of the Miami International Boat Show was a resounding success for exhibitors, attendees, and the local tourism industry. For this year’s show, we invested in new amenities, transportation options and exhibit space, and our approximately 100,000 guests embraced those upgrades just as we’d hoped they would,” said Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the organizers of the show. “Our guests and our exhibitors continue to be thrilled with this waterfront venue, and we are, too – it’s clearly a natural fit to host the Miami International Boat Show and we’re already looking forward to welcoming guests back to the Marine Stadium site in 2018.”

With an estimated $3 billion in product on display this year, exhibitors experienced "brisk sales" in boats, accessories and more, NMMA said. Initial data indicate the 2017 Boat Show will meet or exceed its nearly $600 million economic impact and again directly support more than 6,500 full-time jobs.

"This year's show was a big success for us, bringing out a lot of attendees who were ready to buy. We sold more boats this year than previous years and are already excited about 2018,” noted Patrick Turner from Catalina Yachts, based in Largo, Florida.

2017 show upgrades began with transportation to and from the event site at Virginia Key. The number of water taxis increased by more than 47 percent over 2016 and higher-capacity vessels were used. At the same time, the number of water taxi pick-up and drop-off locations was streamlined from seven to four to further meet the high demand for water transportation. The shuttle bus operation was streamlined, as well, from six to five locations, boosting the frequency of trips at all five pick-up locations.

The net result was fewer boat show-related car trips on the Rickenbacker Causeway that connects Virginia Key with the mainland. Overall, Miamians again embraced the boat show’s park & ride model in 2017. The show counted nearly 90,000 water taxi and shuttle bus riders by attendees who went to or from the show from designated offsite locations.

Upon arriving at Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin, boat show attendees experienced several more upgrades:
An expanded in-water boat display, with 550 boats and yachts located in the show’s 100 percent temporary, eco-friendly marina in the Marine Stadium Basin
An on-water VIP lounge aboard a 111-foot luxury yacht with an exclusive sky deck overlooking the show’s marina and Miami’s skyline
A completely revamped dining experience by Great Performances, which operates concessions programs at world-class events such as the Miami Open, and featured local favorites, such as The Knife Steakhouse, Latin Café and Sushi Maki *“We learned important lessons as it relates to transportation during last year’s show, and the resulting adjustments we made for the 2017 event not only made it easier for our guests to get to and from the show, but ensured we again kept traffic flowing smoothly on Virginia Key,” said Ben Wold, manager of the Miami International Boat Show. “The vast majority of show-goers took advantage of our upgraded park & ride system, and we’re particularly pleased with how well the water taxi system worked this year. At a time when Miami-Dade County is looking for mass transit solutions, the Boat Show is setting a great example for what can be done.”

The 2018 Miami International Boat Show will be held at Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin, February 15-19, 2018.

“As we’ve done for 76 years, we’re constantly tweaking elements of the show to ensure we provide a world-class experience for our guests and exhibitors, as well as the community,” noted Wold. “We’re already making plans for things like improved lighting and air conditioning in the tents, ongoing enhancements to the transportation plan, and working with exhibitors to create even more exciting displays."

Mercury Marine introduces Next-Gen VesselView 703
    February 28, 2017

Mercury Marine, the world leader in marine propulsion and technology, introduces the next generation of VesselView, the recreational marine industry’s premier multifunction display family: Mercury® VesselView® 703. The new VesselView 703 made its debut at the opening of the 2017 Miami International Boat Show on Virginia Key on February 16, 2017.

Providing precise, reliable control combined with increased clarity, high-definition resolution, wide viewing angles, and enhanced controls for easier operation in all conditions, VesselView 703 incorporates the new Simrad® SolarMAX® HD display.

The bright, high-definition glass touchscreen display has a 16 x 9 aspect ratio for higher visibility, glare-reducing coating, and dimmable lighting. The hybrid touchscreen and button interface allows users to choose the display interaction they prefer to use depending on sea state and weather conditions.

VesselView 703 simultaneously displays information for up to four engines in an easy-to-read interface. The display provides up-to-date information for more than 30 engine parameters, including: Fuel Level & Range, Oil Temperature & Pressure, Battery Voltage, Water Depth, Genset and more.

Built-in features include a 10Hz GPS and chart plotter capability (regional electronic chart cards purchased separately). VesselView 703 also has an integrated echosounder and true dual-channel CHIRP, making it an essential fishing companion. It also can be integrated with all the Simrad accessories for the NSS Evo3 product line, including radar, sonar transducers, fish finder transducers, AIS, VHF, Sonic Hub/Fusion Link, C-Zone digital switching and more.

A highly expandable system, VesselView 703 has the gateway functionality to allow SmartCraft data to be displayed on NMEA 2000 devices. It supports 16 languages and multiple unit conversions, and also features automatic notification of available software updates through GoFree Wi-Fi, which is integrated into the system.

Included in the VesselView 703 kit is Mercury’s VesselView Link, which is required to fully integrate the propulsion system and make the display truly multi-functional. VesselView 703 will be available in late May. Kit pricing remains the same as for the VesselView 702 kit; no price increase is anticipated for 2017.

Bahamas featured at Miami Boat Show

The Islands of the Bahamas was one of the only destinations exclusively featured at the recent Miami International Boat Show, held February 16-20, at the Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin in Miami, Florida.

Now in its 77th year, the five day event which attracted some 100,000 persons, featured 2,000 professional exhibitors showcasing more than 3,000 boat types under tent and on sea, ranging from cruise liners, sports fishing yachts, personal water craft, custom boats, dinghies, sail, pedal, wooden and power boats, to docking tools, marine accessories, electronics, engines, navigational equipment, nautical gifts and apparel to business services for marines and boating industries.

On hand to display and discuss the various products of the Bahamas were representatives from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (BMOT) along with some of its leading hotel industry and marina partners, including Abaco Beach Resort, Schooner’s Bay, The Palm Cay Marine, Bimini Big Game, Old Bahama Bay, Valentines Resort & Marina, Green Turtle Cay Hotel, Staniel Cay Yacht Club, Treasure Cay Resort, Romora Bay Resort & Marina, Resorts World Bimini, Balearia Cruise Lines, and Grand Bahama Island Promotion Board.*

“The Bahamas, which lies just 55 nautical miles off the coast of Florida is a mecca for boaters.* There is a high level of interest in boating flings to our islands,” said Richard Treco, Sr. Manager at the BMOT, responsible for vertical markets and boating.

“The Miami Boat Show is the largest boat show in Florida and is an interactive show dedicated to connecting together brokers, sellers and buyers in the boating business. Participating in events such as this provides us with a one stop shop and opportunity for us to meet with partners who have current bookings and programs with us and simultaneously, network and establish new business and programs with new partners,” he said.

Captain Will Rodgers, Director of Large Boat Business for Boston Whalers, who has been leading are annual rendezvous to Bimini and Abaco, is currently finalizing his 15th fling to Bimini and third to Abaco.* His 55 boats 300 persons fling, which is open to all type boats size 34-42 feet, will take place June 13-17, 2017 to Resorts World Bimini in Bimini and his 15' Boston Whaler boat fling, by invitation only, will take place July 7-15, 2017 to Abaco Beach and Green Turtle Cay Resort in Abaco.

Captain Rodgers said, “Boston Whaler owners love to visit The Bahamas.* The Bahamas’ proximity to the U.S. and it’s easy gulfstream passage coupled with its unique and memorable destination experiences, culture and perfect weather conditions, is an easy sell for whalers.* Additionally, these flings build the confidence level these novice boaters need to take this journey on their own, in the future,” he said. *

Joe Neber, Owner of Contenders Boats, and one of several boaters with flings to The Bahamas said, he enjoys working with The Bahamas and looks forward to leading his fleet of 50 boats into Bimini, April 28-29, 2017.* * His boats will range in size from 22 to 40 feet.*

David Gauzens, Concession Manager of Adventure Sports believes that “boating opportunities in The Bahamas are endless, especially for recreational and wind sport competitions, and I look forward to exploring many of them,” he said. *

David, who will be visiting The Bahamas April 20-24, 2017 as an observer in the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament in Grand Bahama will also use the time to conduct logistical work for his planned group’s visit there, when he brings his kite boarding competition to The Bahamas in 2018.* Former U.S. President Barak Obama and famed billionaire, Richard Branson, made the free-style competition popular recently.

Sales Executive at Schooner Bay Resort, Luis da Cunha, said he has “seen business at his company jump substantially over the past four years, from their participation in the Miami Boat show.”* *

“We have seen a 45 percent increase in our home rentals and marina usage as well as new buyer and rental prospects, all generated from registration from these type shows,” he said. *

Schooner Bay, located 28 miles south of Marsh Harbour Abaco, is a fairly new 220 acres, 39 private home rental community and marina development in Abaco. Its full service 12-slip marina can accommodate boats up to 100 feet.*

“Our participation in this show makes prudent business sense,” says Emanuel Alexiou, Co-owner of the Abaco Beach Resort. “Our placement here guarantees us old business from long-term friends and families, as well as brings us new business.* As the largest marina in The Bahamas, with some 200 boat slips and an 86 condo rooms hotel, we can accommodate luxury yachts up to 200 feet,” he said.

Honda Marine considers how make a better looking boat engine with its design concept premiering at the 2017 Miami International Boat Show. The exterior cover for the angular powerplant takes direct cues from the latest Acura NSX’s shape.

The concept engine’s look from Honda’s Advanced Design Group. The folks there completely reimagine what a boat’s powerplant would look like. Rather than being purely utilitarian, this mill exudes style. A floating blade with satin black paint dominates the look, and the designers claim the new NSX is the direct inspiration for the part. The mesh center section references the supercar’s intakes, and the red panels create a connection with its taillights. The Nouvelle Blue Pearl paint on the body of the engine also comes from the palette available on the Acura.
